Hi SJ,
I have a pair of Cressi 2000HF for shore dives which have taken a good beating now,and a pair of Sporasub Carbons for boat and open water dives. If diving in the kelp mostly and walking across rocks etc. and most of your diving is in less than 12m of water, the open heel fins with a pair of good soled booties is the way to go (cost especially).
A shark shield will not tie up in the kelp, they are specially designed to not hook up on reef or other obstacles and are a great piece of mind if you are diving GWS territory and feel like you are watching your back all the time, but each diver has their own preference.

Thanks for all the info Lenny! Much appreciated! I'll check out those clubs.

Unfortunatley my move down to Cape Town has been very stressful with almost everything I've touched breaking, including my car's cylinder head. With the kind of luck (and weather) I've been having I haven't even thought of getting into the tub with the GWs. Anyway, I'm in Muizenberg for the next 6 months, but really won't mind heading up north for a couple of dives. I work for myself, so I might be able to do some Monday dives. Please PM me if you need a dive buddy for some dives.

Thanks again,
John

Hey John, I'm off the whole weekend + monday + I'm gonna be staying in Fish Hoek, so if your up for a dive please give me a shout. My no. 084 568 9189 (i could not be bothered about PM's anymore)

Swedish Jim:

Thanks for the idea about tapeing the straps back. My word thats such a simple solution, I can't believe I never thought about it!:head. The straps are a royal pain in the backside as far as helping you get entangled in your bouy line.

Kreefing was the first type of diving I ever did, which the open heels are a must, for the same reasons as you said: having nice strong booties + not getting tangled in kelp. However that said I'm working towards getting upgrades (long fins) cos my shorties often leave me out of breath and contstantly 10-20m behind my buddy divers with longfins.
But as I said i'm working towards it, cos they are expensive + I just spent alot of money on a shield and a new custom suit. So my wife might divorce me if I buy more gear at the momentrofl.

Most people say that when you get long fins you never look back. All i know is short fins and the cool part about them is they last forever and are basically indestructable and make for easy manouvering in kelp.

Damn! Just saw this now, so I guess I won't/didn't join you for the dive. I'll give you a call later today and give you my number.

That's alright the water in falsebay was lousy the whole weekend, and I never got to go diving anyway. Was thinking of trying the atlantic side, but it is sometimes a bit boreing outside of kreef season, best you could hope for is to hang around tidal pool walls on an incomeing high tide and wait for some gallie. Or drag your gun through the endless forest of kelp in search of hotties.

I'm gonna be pretty busy the whole weekend, but are you perhaps free on Monday?

Hey Lenny,

Thanks for the dive dude! It was great finally getting into the water even though the vis was crap. Those whales were awesome! Sneaky buggers given their size.

Next dive I'll bring my camera along so that I can shoot something too :) and freakin remember not to leave my D3 on the side of the road! I still can't believe no one took it.

Looking forward to the next dive, so give me a shout when you go out.

Hunlee: You mentioned a quarry. Do you mind me asking where it is? Thanks.

Hiya!
It's in Somerset West, will give you a call tomorrow, might go this week,
you're welcome to join...

anyone know of this weekends conditions....atlantic, falsebay. pringlebay side?
in the mood to get wet :)

also found 3 spearguns at a cash crusaders...
1 open muzzle 90 cm double bands made in greece = R400 (friend just bought it, brand new...maybe used once or twice)
1 rabitech apex with a reel (also used once or twice) R400...im buying it end of month....about 110cm
1 rabitech stealth 110cm 18mm band....(must have been his favorite cos its still in good condition but looks like its been used for a season maybe) R400

Those are some deals!
But as crazy as this sounds, at the moment I cannot find two R200 notes to rub together. :)

does anyone here perhaps know of any second hand spearing fins for sale anywhere? mates bday and i wanna try get some fins....if i cant get long blades im willing to get open heel...phoned louis at rabitech and he says he has some EZ-life fins (open heel) R400 or so....anyone know of these?

Quick update, my phones about the only thing that got wet this past couple of months :blackeye. But Im busy servicing my gear and should be back in action somewhere around December as the next couple weekends looks pretty busy.

Hows the water been.
Ctg you still goin over the pond I must get my stuff from you before you leave or you can leave it with Lenny if you see each other more often. Lenny has the little ones arrived yet?

nooit dude, its all good.....staying this side :)
definately hook up for afew summer dives! how goes it with the whole fatherhood? all its cracked up to be?

Went for a dive on saturday morning.....got up at 6am!!!!!!!! haha...anyway....went through to false bay to see if the water was good enough for a dive....we drove to smits...took a walk down....then walked along the beach towards partridge point.......and walked....and walked...and walked! finally found a good spot to get in.....and went for it....water was warmish....not crystal...but could see the bottom from the top in about 10 metres of water....although it was a little murky....
the second we jumped in some nice size galjoen got a fright and swam off....but the whole dive we were seeing hotties, wildeperd, galjoen, dassies........didnt dive too long or too far out as it wasnt my ideal viz..so didnt get to see any roman or anything as tasty ;) ended up leaving with a jutjaw and another species of fish which tasted great on the braai.....the shellfish was also great..battered and fried ;)
cheers
