It looks like you could use a reading comprehension lesson from Crusty (Sorry for the veiled insult Crusty, but his comment about you being a "dull knife" of the drawer is the only reference I have of him on DB...yet another insult to a member of DB by a moderator from Spearboard...classy website or what?!).

Let's get to the "beer" comment. Here's what I said:

That comment or ass talk (translated for your comprehending convenience) was made as a passing comment (pun intended) on how close knit the moderators seem to be at SB. So you're right, I had no idea what I was talking about BUT that's why I used the word PROBABLY. O.K, O.K, I get it, you guys don't share beers with any frequency. sheesh

Why am I not surprised that out of this sentence:

you focused only on the word "too". It was meant to read like an informercial for SB. Kinda like, "If you too would like to be called names and have your posts be deleted because we didn't agree with its content or that it was too verbose, come on over to SB...

I understand "sporting" is open to interpretation. And although I didn't come out and say it wasn't sporting, you come out and say I'm ignorant...for something I didn't do or say...SB representin'.

The generally accepted meaning of "sport" is physical activity or exertion, with rules or customs, engaged in competitively.

So board and internet games would not qualify. The sport of chess? Although a respected passtime... it's clearly not sporting.

Motor sports includes racing of every kind of vehicle. Catching huge fish in fighting chairs aboard sport fishing boats is considered sport.

Visit the periodicals rack in any book store and catch the titles of the magazines on sports cars, sport boats, sport fishing, hunting sports, and even scuba diving. (Sport Diver doesn't even write about spearfishing.)

Does spearing a 403 lbs fish in 400 feet of water on technical scuba fit the definition of sport? Obviously it does!

Except to a few excessively arrogant, elitist freedivers.

BTW I know and freedive with a lot of divers with some awesome speared fish to their credit. I'd like to see what the desenters here have to show for their great sportsmanship abilities!

Nice fish, deep dive, well done. Shall we leave it at that. I personaly dont fish like you guys but if it works for you then great. It does seem to be about egos now and not about the sport or the method. Thats just my two cents!

In the State of Florida possessing a fish "taken" with a powerhead in State waters is illegal. I am suprised no one else has picked up on that small fact. You all need to check the Admin. Code of Florida, maybe it is different for commercial fisherman, the code I read did not differentiate though. ( it is also illegal to use a powerhead to take fish in State waters)

Powerheads are completely legal in federal waters, just 9 miles offshore.

He did not shoot it with a powerhead.

Dan's own words:

"I spotted the monster facing me about 100 feet away. I got my bouyancy trimmed out and he came charging down the wreck towards me. Time began to slow down as many years of effort and dreams all came down to a few seconds. He went into an aggressive mode, changed colors and threw up his dorsal fin. Awesome. Just frigging awesome."

"I had made a couple of barbless shafts up, sharpened to a 2 inch long needle point. I pointed my 52 inch SS Hornet and slammed a free shaft into the sweet spot. OMG, I almost rolled him. He started shaking back and forth and I slammed shaft number two into his head. I swam over and grabbed him and was thinking OK now WTF. We crashed into the wreck at 397' and I had my hands full. He was still moving around a little and I decided that I didn't want my 46 year old ass tied to this fish at this depth."

"I put a PH on my kill spike and slammed into his head. I'm not sure now whether it was neccessary or not, but at the time it seemed like the prudent thing to do. I had been planning on lift bagging him up, but decided to pump air into his mouth and swim him up a few feet. 20 feet up and 10 seconds of pumped air later, he took off and I watched him blast towards the surface. Awesome."

To a commercial spearfisherman it doesn't really matter if it was sporting or not, he would have shot it either way.

IMO it was sporting to freeshaft it twice, and then just be sure it was over, by using the PH. Much like killing a fish with a hammer in the boat.

The operative word is “possession” not "use", and there in lies the double whammy; clearly the shooter was way outside state waters when the fish was killed. I am just stating the law as I know it, I am not judging anyone, the shooter could have used a weedwacker for all I care. In my opinion it was an amazing dive to pull off.

There is a similar rule here, key word possession. And they call them Bangsticks not PH's. But I had always been told that you could use a PH, Bangstick, to kill say a shark but could not bring him home, just personal protection I guess. I'm sure there is something to learn/understand here, because I know Headhunter is following the rules so someone please enlighten me/us. Wouldn't a better comparison be shooting a 1403 LB Moose w/ a Longbow and then humanly finish him off with a pistol shot to the head?
I'm not trying to stir the SHIT but rather spray a little Lysol on it.

That is ONE BIG fish taken at EXTREME depth!! Congratulations once again to the fortunate diver!!!!

Unfortunately, this has now turned into a scuba vs freediving vs sporting thread. All of these have been discussed at length already!!! (probably on ALL spearing forums too!!)

At the end of the day, we're all doing what we love, simply in different ways.
