Cornwall 2007!

Just been for a sesh with eddie2stroke at our favourite spot in the Mounts Bay area. Water was a bit cloudy but pretty good vis in a few spots. Fishing mainly in quite shallow water (2-5 metres) around the stringweed beds and over a large area of thick kelpy seaweed out deeper.

Spotted a beauty Bass under the kelp bed through a gap and managed to get right over the top of him and line him up without him spotting me. Shot him through the back of the neck from quite close range. Weighed in at just under 5lb's! First good sized bass of the season for me and a healthy meal for the family (and the in-laws!).

In the water till nearly nine o'clock - lovin the light evenings! Hoping to get in quite a bit over the next week (half-term! I love teacher's holidays!).

Good skills mate.......i wen't down to 'mysto spot x' as it shall be named (pm me if you want info)....got in a bit later than i'd liked but it was pretty good....straight off the 'beach' the vis was pretty bad but still well fishable....moved down the coast a bit to the hot spot and saw a few mullet...one was totally oblivious to me so i banged him with my barrel and he wizzed around and looked well shocked...made me laugh.Anyway....found a few good spots and soon enough a few smallish bass came in...too small to shoot but nice to see...'they're here' ithough 'goody'....kept on diving..saw a few mullet and shot a couple....found a nice deep gulley which i sank into and just at the point of heading for the surface a big silver grey battle cruiser came by but to the left.....i slowly tracked towards him but he turned at an angle and just dissapeared into the murk....thought about a pot shot but....nah....didn't want to wound him.....saw a few more tiddlers and a flounder but just enjoyed seeing the life as the sun went down....lovely dive though,really got me enthusiasm back for it.....as i walked up the 'beach (it's not really a beach)...there was a small pond and watched some small fish leaping for the flys as it got dark......lovely.Hoping to head back down for a dawny tomorrow but sinking a few beers so i'll see what happens when the alarm goes off.
All in all though,best dive so far...bit of a drive but well worth it.

If you're ever up for a dive give me a shout...my diving buddy's shagged his back so it'd be cool to hook up with some fellow spearers.

That harbour looks a little familiar.

Yeah, i was thinkign of going to have a look and meet some people, and have a bit of a session in a new dive spot, but the dates clash with work and exams :(.

Badlander, if you could drop me a PM about that spot (if it was on the south coast) that would be ideal.

aahhh... nice fish btw mate, and good choice on the gun! Are you using 18mm rubbers?

I'd second that....looks pretty bleak out the window right now....3ft of swell and pretty blustery.Looks like the south coast has got a bit of swell today also judging by the cams.
Had two dives on the Lizard yesterday which were very dissapointing.Lovely conditions but hardly any fish.I saw one mullet on each dive,one of which i shot.
Going to try to get in somewhere tonight or failing that in the morning.Might have to study multimap some more.

looks like ill have to get the rods out, its not the same! :head going to head off to teignmouth in the morning. the suns ment to be showing its face tommorrow! last time caught 9 schoolies which was brilliant fun on a carp rod!

teignmouth, are they selling live ells yet?. Not many big bass in teignmouth but plenty of schoolies.
The weather in torquay improves on Tuesday with the wind going west, but i suspect the plankton will still be hanging around.

yeah they started catching the eels a few weeks ago but they have'nt been out this weekend coz of the rough weather and the easterly winds! pretty rough out there today, glad i was'nt in the power boat race

I'm having a very good week!!

Went in this morning with eddie2stroke for a dive at our favourite haunt on the south coast. The vis was a bit low after the poor weather at the weekend and there was a bit of swell pushing in with the rising tide.

After about an hour of straining to see through the kelp to the bottom I managed to find a clearish spot and after a bit of a wait I spotted a 3-4 pound bass hiding under the weed. I lined him up and got a shot off but missed him. Cursing, thinking that this would be one of those 'one chance only' days I reloaded as quickly as I could hoping he would still be in the area - Of course he was long gone though.

About 1 minute later I looked down again and saw another very nice sized bass directly below me and well exposed from the weed. This time I lined him up and managed to get a good shot off, catching him in through the back of the head and out through the gill plate.

He weighed in at 6lb's and my biggest Bass ever!

Coupled with the 5 pounder I had on thursday this has turned out to be a very good (lucky?) week - and all this in May. I don't normally get in the water until well into June!!

Are the bass in early this year or is this normal for the time of year? If so it looks like I have been wasting half the season these past three years waiting for the summer months to come before getting in the water!! Doh!

Anyone else had much luck over the bank holiday weekend? I've got the baby for the next two days while the wife works but hope to be in again at the end of the week.

Just got back from a long weekend down at the Lizard with my family and even though the weather was crap we all had a good time just being by the sea.
You buggers down there don’t know how lucky you are to have such a beautiful part of the world to live in.

Huw stopped by your hometown on the way home but you were not at the aquarium so I just left a hello message at the front door, hope it got passed onto you.:)

Oh and its good to see some Bass coming out.
Will be back down in August if anybody fancy’s showing a Somerset boy how to do it?:) :)

Nice one Podge, glad you had a good time, sorry to have missed you though! I haven't been down to work over the last couple of days... too much revision to do :head

Let me know when your down in August... i don't know about showing you how to do it... ( I could do with some pointers myself) but there will be no problem giving you a boat trip out to some of the quieter bays and rocks with me and my buddy :).

Nick, bass are present around the southern UK all year. However, they're not always inshore in numbers and their breeding period is between December and March. Most people start to look for them in April and the first catches are the odd fish with numbers increasing so that by mid May the season is in full swing. Top months are June to October with a few fish into November and even December.We have been catching bass at night in January but as I started off by saying bass are present all year round.

Part of the reason most people have a fixed season is water temperature and vis. January can be very hard to fish as the cold limits your total dive time and also saps your will to hunt effectively. Then there's winter gales to stir up the water and crap up the vis.

This year is actually a little later than last as the winter had such long periods of sustained heavy weather that the vis was some of the worse for 30 years. Now it's cleared up a bit then the spearo's and the bass have been migrating inshore and catches are being reported.

My favourite month is September, with the warmest water, usually settled weather and the fish start to fatten up prior to their winter breeding cycle.
