Dived the Falmouth area today.Lots of swimming done as i tried to access a favourite spot from a different beach.Lesson learnt.....legs are still aching.
Fishwise,i saw two mullet straight off the bat but let them go....then didn't see a thing for ages (and miles) came across a bass that could have been mistaken for a fish finger sizewise.Saw a Huge mullet in the stringweed but my brain could't make my trigger finger work...off it swam.
Found a shoal or schoolies that i hung out with till they tired of me then i headed out to a point and deeper water with the pollock.Still no bass though.Started getting cold so headed back and saw a good sized bass in the 5-6lb region and once again totally failed to pull the trigger.
Got out.Cold.Tired and to top it all off the exhaust fell off my car.

I am very new and therefore excited about Spearfishing (presumably lots of despair and dissapointment to come)
I would love some advice on a few good spots in Cornwall, where I'll be next week -
ALso I spend alot of time in North Devon, around Clovelly/Hartland - anybody have any recommendations in the area?

Went out at MAenporth today and took a long swim to a spot down the coast a bit,didn't see much on the way down but when i got to the good bit there was a mullet festival going on and found a nice group of 3lb+ bass.Final score,1 bass and 3 mullet and a very tiring swim back.Vis was okayish and it was at least a little warmer today.Hoping to go tomorrow evening.
Dived a spot on the east side of the Lizard yesterday which is usually pretty bassey, okay vis and plenty of string weed & baitfish.. But absolutely no bass. Do they think winter has come early and cleared off?
Nah i'm not going to the festival, but i am going to be in the water today, weather looks good, i'll post a report later on tonight. High tide is at 14.30, so trying to get in around 13.30ish. Will be the first dive I have had in over a month (except for the open water padi course last weekend)!!!

Anyone know any good spots around St Austell? I'm working in Charlestown at the moment and tides should be alright next week for some afterwork spearing. The vis is clearing up and looks okay at the moment.

Managed to get in the water a few days ago with Huw (after over a month out, mainly due to exams..). We headed out to one of our local spots, vis was much better than expected at around 3m but reached around 5-6m in places.
By the time we got in it was nearly 2 o'clock, with HT at half past. Huw managed to sort himself out before me and jumped off the boat and checked out the shallower rocky areas. By the time I had got in and swam over to him he already had a decent sized mullet flapping around on his spear!
I decided to travel out to the headlands in search of some bass, looked around for a while, dived down to try and entice them in for the aspetto shot, but they weren't playing so I headed back a little and followed some sandeel. To my delight I caught the sight of a lone Mackerel stalking the eels so I tracked it and managed to make the shot before it shot off out of sight. Not the biggest specimen out there, but it was my first speared mackerel and it tasted great!
After this both Huw and I had multiple encounters with bass of varying sizes, some we had to leave as they looked to small, but a few were more then fair game and we tried hard to pick them off (they were at the very end of our visibility) but they were all unusually easy to spook! :head In the end Huw settled for a small Pollack (He needed something for tea! - as the Mullet was requested by a friend). And we also picked up a few spider crabs too.
All in all it was a great dive, but I'm not sure when the next trip will be as the weather on Thursday night was awful and I'm sure it will have destroyed the visibility! :rcard
I suppose I'll just be reading everyone else's' reports for the next few days....

Thanx! I'm the blonde one, and Huw is the one with the longer brown hair! I'm sure you know the others..... 
I've since spoken to Huw after writing the report, and he's dying to go out this evening, so we may take a gamble about the viz, and/or find somewhere more sheltered!

I know for a fact that huw will tell you he loves his Gabianno,i have one too and i'll tell you same.
The barrel basically widens and flattens in the center of the barrel to give it better tracking,it also has partial rail or shaft-guide.It's not the lightest of guns by any means but it's nicely balanced and has got a solid feel to it.The handle is pretty big and some people don't like the safety switch claiming its a little hard to operate but,i never use the safety anyway so i'm not fussed.You can have a closed or an open muzzle on this gun,i have the open muzzle and although i was initially sceptical when i got it off Dave,i soon got used to it and now i'd never go back to closed.

Each to their own but i had 2 friends who had seatch gab's abd i tried one and hated it! Side to side movement thru the water was nothing special. In fact it was no better than my old spearo venom. Up and down movement on the gab felt worse though with the spear rattling. That was on both guns.

Gutshot, I take it from your post that you must have tried an closed muzzled version, due to the vertical aiming causing a rattling of the shaft. I was unaware of such a version, but it seems that open muzzles put alot of people off at first and it therefore seems logical for seatec to manufacture such an option. The Seatec gabbiano with an open muzzle - when rigged properly should and will NOT have a rattle to it when raising or lowering it in the water. This is due to the fact that the line passing over the top of the spear and muzzle firmly holds down the tip of the shaft making it unable to move, and actually presses it firmly against the barrel rail. However a closed muzzle would not do this, and in fact one of the reasons that I do not use closed muzzle guns is owing to the fact that the few that I did use allowed the spear to slide around a few mm inside the muzzle creating a rattle and clanking sound when moving.
I have to say that I love the gabbiano, and that the open muzzle gives an amazingly clear line of sight. Also the trb head places the bands below the spear in order to give superb accuracy. Once you have had a few shots with the gun and know how it flies (my setup = 90cm gun 16mm rubbers 16.35mm shaft w/ single flopper) then it does hit exactly where you point it, and that 99.99% of the missed shots are down to human error and no fault of the actual gun ( as with most guns actually!). I think that spaghetti told me that either the winner or runner-up of the Italian or European underwater target shooting championships (can't rember which) won his place with a gabby.
Brilliant gun... probably not for everyone (what is though?!?) and like badlander said... it could be a little too heavy for some to like, but personally i think that the solid build and substance feels good, and that it makes recoil seems very minimal. I don't really think that the cuttle shape makes a huge difference in sideways tracking due to the weight of the gun, but i certainly wouldn't say that tracking with it is hard... pete shot his mackerel the other day with a 90cm gabby and that was swimming at a fair old pace.
I also tried out the new gabbiano snake last weekend with shark fin tabs, circular rubbers, muzzle to accomodate 2 sets of rubbers, new trigger and new wishbone system. Was pretty cool, not much different really, and i probably prefer the old shaft without the sharkfin tabs, but nevertheless pretty damn cool.
Pete and I dived yesterday evening, and the vis on the top 2 feet of water was probably about 45cm... which was frustrating, it meant that hunting the stringweed indian style was out, and that the only option was aspettos. I really held back due to being tank diving earlier that day, and no bass were seen. Shot one pollack, but we got out after perhaps an hour tops.
Completed my padi openwater course this morning with two dives off Pendennis Point Falmouth, and it the vis was suprisingly good reaching 5-6m in some places. Peeped into a lobby pot to see a big fat lobster sitting in there, so someone will be having a nice tea tonight. Also saw a large bull seal - maybe he will have the lobster
Thinking of heading that way this week if our vis down here doesnt budge sharpish!
