Got in yesterday on the north coast mid tide. The vis was good, a small swell and within two minutes I was on top of loads of schoolies which stayed around for about half an hour. Every dive they would come streaming in head on and not really stopping just buzzing right past me and then circling back. They were mostly undersize but pretty fearless and I picked up a 2lb and a 3lb fish with my best shot to date. Lots of lead and plenty of height and it stoned him at full distance. Still rerunning it in my head it every couple of seconds. Plenty of large pollack about but they seemed more edgy and some skittish mullet spooking the other fish. It's a spot that I've never seen too much at but ticks every box so I have worked at it and it paid off. Ended the two hours with a 4lb+ fish that I also stoned. New fins worked a treat and every thing seemed to click into place. Instead of being expectant on the surface I just expected something to happen and it did. It was near perfect. Looks like I can get in tomorrow afternoon down at Lands End if anyone has any suggestions.Im thinking about Cot Valley, I've been there a couple of times and always left thinking it should have been better. Anyway after yesterday I'm not sure if I care.

Nice going mate. What fins have you got? I've had little response asking people what fins they recommend.

Tribs, I must of missed your post on fins? I think you will find that ice fins are the most popular amongst the British spearos & generally very popular worldwide?

Tribs if you can find them get yourself a pair of Captain Nemos, I got mine from Spearo Dave but I think he’s stopped doing them now. If you can't find them then LeaderFins are good, Flyflicker has just got a pair and I must say that I’m very tempted to get a set myself.

Pav well done on the Bass mate, a dam fine effort sir in crap conditions.

Thanks guys for the fin replies. My thread was called 'Fins, fins and more fins', its still there if you think of any worth mentioning. Was thinking Gara 3000LD from Cressi but ICE have come up again and again and Napper has recommended other Omer fins on top so I really would appreciate some more reviews etc. i currently have some Tiguillio fins which just seem lifeless and stiff.

Pav - congrats on a lovely fish and PB mate - nearly always worth a go eh.

Tribs I use waterway fins - fibre plastic - same as alot of the guys I fish with use and also the same as the Captain Nemo ones which Podge mentions.

I have heard a few people say that their Ice fins have snapped on them - including guys who have posted on this website - worryingly when they have been on an ascent (I think it was Joe who posted on the Dorset thread - can you remember Podge?) Scottie3030 has Ice fins and he has told me he thinks they are a bit too soft.

Whenever I look at the French and other European spearo mags alot of the divers seem to use the Garas.

I guess fins are pretty personal - just my two pennerth

Garas for me all the way - they're cheap and bomb proof. Not the best fin as they under perform against Ledafins, Nemos etc... As Mr T says, it's personal preference but I prefer the straight Gara 3000 to the 3000 LD's. The 3000's (black ones) are a tad stiffer.

Can you try any of your dive buddies' fins?

Tribs, Re. Fins, I posted on a different thread but have had what can only be described as electric shocks in my feet since changing fins. I kinda suspect the Fins, although the new fins feel comfortable. I have a scan of my feet in September to try and identify the problem. My old fins were sporasub, the new fins cressi. Definately a better fin, but may be differences in foot pocket size that is causing the problem. The Sporasubs pockets seem a bit wider / fatter. (for information the Sporasub fin cracked where it is screwed to the foot pocket.. may be unlucky but they were cheapies!).

sporasub elite for me, had them 3 years now and still going strong i find cressi to narrow plus you can change the blades in the sporasubs but it is persanal choice

I took both my board and dive gear to the beach to cover both bases. I still sat there for 15 min trying to make up my mind :head. Finally opted for a dive and made my way out thru the surf past the tourists flapping about! The viz was slightly dissapointing at about 4m but due to the waves i was happy enough. Things started out good right from the start. I was buzzed by 2 bass for my first 6 dives. One was too small but the other was just on size. After getting bored of watching them i headed out to the reef to find something bigger. My local beach is not known for big fish but it is reliable to get you a few for the dinner table and today was no different. The futher seaward i went the bigger they got, but the bigger the waves got too. I was getting thrown all over the place on my dives and could feel the kelp getting caught up on my dive gear. No problems but i does keep you on edge. Ended up with a long swim back to the beach after the tide turned against the current. Going on to what Pav is talking about i use Cressi 2000HF fins which i have had since,......damned if i can remember, but they have always treated me well. Never had any problems even in strong currents! Saw bass on most of my dives and ended up coming out with 3 2lb bass. Not the biggest but but big enough to feed me. Just baked one whole and filleted the other 2 for later. Maybe looking for something a little bigger this weekend if the surf stays rubbish.

Do try the Gara 2000hf if you get the chance again. They are the stiffest fins I have tried so far and they will give you some idea of how stiff a fin you like.
I like Beauchat Elite, which are nearly as stiff but which seem a lot "snappier" and more reactive. I'm starting to like my specialfin hybrids a lot more too, now that I'm getting used to them. If they'd been a little bit harder I think they'd be near perfect.

The vis has dropped considerably ( springs ? ) Picked up a 2 1/2 lb this afternoon mixed up in schoal of pollack and had two other shots and missed both times. The swell picked up and I got chaffed on the rocks ......... on the way out and then fought my way out of the carpark and trundled home at 20mph. Got home cooked the fish we all ate, everyone else went to bed, great go for another dive, bingo 5 1/2 lb fish in the near dark. I think I might have found one of them there holes all the pros keep banging on about. Chuffed. might even sort a picture out

Went in on the south coast yesterday, terrible visibility , a complete busted flush, bumped into a spearo getting out as I went in... wonder which one of you that was?

Hi everyone. New to ths site, but have spent a long time down here spearfshing from a youngster and now a 40+ father of 3.

I am based in Carlyon Bay and this is my local dive point - previously my local was Talland which very rarely blanked.

Was out week b4 last and had half a doz spiders (have friends at work who love them) large flounder (better than people think to eat) mullet of 3 lbs and a 42 cm bass. Got lots of browny points from the wife as she loves both mullet and bass (in fact she prefers mullet).

Was at Pentewan last week for the kids and met shiny1 who had done well amongst the noise and aggro that is emit city on the one sunny day of the summer!

Mostly dive from the shore (lazy and short for my weight!) but someone bought me a "Lidl" kayak once which believe it or not has lasted 3 years without any problems although I recently had to buy a new bladder from Germany - 12 euros for the inner and 6 euros delivery!

Anyway - was hoping to get in today, but when I popped to look at conditions, I could see vis of less than a metre!

Glad to see so many spearos in County and if anyone wants to know about the sea condition in this area, please let me know.

good to hear from you.

Went out just after we spoke and say 3 or 4 bass up to abour 4 pounds right to the east in the next bay.

Hardest part was dodging the rockclimbers/kayakers and messin about in boaters!

Let me know if you want to know the situation down there as I am able to take a look without much problem.#

Still the wife s taking the kids to the monster in laws next weekend for a week and I have the week off, so I might do Hemmick/Dodman and Vault if I get chance. Bet the weather is going to be bad!

Alright Cornwall Massive!

You were officially invaded by the Dorset boys today. We carried out a stealth visit to Kennack Sands for a few bass and five of us managed to clear you out of, er........one bass and one mullet! Naturally we are super sharp shooters and our skills are honed to perfection. But, for the sake of good relations we resisted the temptation to take any more fish and leave some for you.

Yeah yeah likely story! We saw a few fish, mainly schoolies and generally had a great day in your excellent vis! Our shooting is not very sharp (ask Podge!) and our skills are not well honed!

A great day none the less, we'll be back to clog up your roads again soon!
