Thanks for the postings Kernow Sniper and Trelawney.
Went for a swim with the missis yesterday, and by chance ended up in Saltash pool for the first time in years! Inspired by the Rob Elliot video, I went for a dynamic apnea pb. I managed 60m which I last did as a 15/16 year old. Something to build on.
Great to know apnea training is feasible at Saltash, just need a couple of takers. Anyone out there???

I always take a big 3 litre bottle of hot soapy water to put my suit on with everytime i go for a dive summer or winter.I dived year round but always blanked mostly through January to March so now i just surf those months.

The word from the dive centres is that the viz on the south coast is not too bad. I am off to give it a shot this afternoon. I will post later and fill you all in on how good/bad it is!

Your right its looking fairly glassy on the south coast, tide pushing in for the afternoon as well, might actually get in for once!

Just came back from taking the wife and kids to Plymouth Aquarum......wish I'd packed the wetsuit......took some video of the big tank and the bass so that I can fake all those deep dive, loads of fish shots on Youtube!!!!!

Had a quick look over the cliffs by home (Carlyon Bay) and vis seems to be less than a metre although this is on low water.

Would be interested to hear from anyone on the south coast as I until Wednesday and need to get wet!!!!!! - the webs between my fngers are drying up!!!!

Good luck and stay safe

Got in in SE cornwall this afternoon. Vis was 2 1/2-3m and seemed to improve during my swim. The wife came along for a paddle on the kayak. (She was on good form today, texting me from the supermarket to ask me what beer I wanted. My hard work is paying off.):friday
As usual, I came home with just pollack, although I do enjoy eating them. Am I the only one who rarely sees anything else? Atleast today they were abundant and OK in size. I have noticed that the bigger/older they are, the more they keep their distance. Hope to get in for a last dive tomorrow before I'm off t north for holidays.

Got in on the south coast in shallow water, vis was murky up to 2.5m for a couple of bits but down to zero in others :( Still managed to bag a mullet out of a shoal in the gloom , cooking now with sizzled ginger, chilli and garlic :)

Anyone know of a secondhand 10HP outboard for sale? I will be down at the outlaws this week looking to source one ASAP.

cheers

Hi everyone - just popped down to check sea conditions on the south coast - it is........flat calm, viz appears 3m+ (looking down from the cliff)........Get in. Hopefully will be getting in later this afternoon (once gone out with the wife and kids!!!!).

Stay Safe

Hi guys. Just went in for a couple of hours on the south coast and saw a fair few mullet up to a probable double figure which I hit and it then went ballistic and managed to pull off the shaft - boy was I chuffed....NOT! I then realised that the bigger bass were targeting a shoal of mini mullet and by being careful I managed to bag a 6 pounder. I also got a 3 lb mullet to go with although had I not missed my first shots it would have been better a beeter trip.....still musn't grumble in view of the recent weather!

Viz was over 20 feet in most places and in fact was clearer than I have seen this year!!!

Good luck and stay safe:friday:friday

Hi all
Got in this afternoon down at Porthpean, sea flat calm viz best I have seen this year also, only saw two small bass and loads of small pollack so again no luck for me.Sea felt a bit colder also.

Regards
Steve

Hey, popped in down Portmellon today, lots of smallish but legal Pollack about, loads of 2lbish bass few flatties and a few cuttlefish. Bagged a couple pollack and 2 flounder but seem to have a major mental problem with the Bass, just can't seem to hit em, or stay down long enough for them to come to me. very annoying, but as everyone is saying vis was pretty good, suprisingly. One other thing, my mate borrowed my brothers mask and snorkel, mares set blue snorkel clear mask, its still out there so happy hunting.

Bit late but here goes. Last night went offshore and dived a reef but it was suffering from a little swell which kept dragging me about. Saw a few bass but they kept there distance due to the amount of movement with the waves. More mullet than i could shake a speargun at though. It has been a while since i last had mullet so i took one and left the others alone. Viz was about 3m but it looked a little better inshore.

Dived the south coast again but inshore this time and the viz was great at least 5m. A little more at times and a little less at others. Not many bass thought! Loads of mullet which were not bothered by me at all. Even swiming really close to my mask. Big too!! Bit of a disapointment since the viz was good but it was nice to be able to see again.

Looking ok for the weekend!

Happy days! :)

The vis HAS cleared up a load.. probably 4-5m in places today.. I got in near Mevagissey and had a great session this afternoon.. only 10 mins in came accross a nice plaice in the sandy areas between the reefs.. never seen one like that before and was unsure about taking the shot but upon closer inspection decided he was a good size and.. well lets just say they're not the hardest things to shoot! (any good ideas on how to cook Plaice??)

About 10 minutes later I came accross 2 good sized bass (not huge.. I'm sure you've all had bigger.. but best I've even seen in a while!).. they just cruised out of the kelp as I passed over them.. difficult angle from above but I had no option and boom the first good bass I've had ever.. with a headshot! haha at this point I was ecstatic!!!rofl

After dispatching and bagging up the bass I started missioning on and to my surprise I got a glimpse of several silver flashes in the distance.. I took a deep breath and sat in the kelp and waited.. there was a small shoal of sand eels keeping very close together above my head and then over the ridge came another nice suspicious bass.. very slowly and head on.. :duhstupidly i risked the shot and came up to reload - suddenly there were bass everywhere!! I almost jumped out of my skin as they shot round me snapping up ALL the sand eels I'd seen before. It was an awesome sight.. then they simly vanished into the blue and all that was left was a few scales and specks of sand eels glistening in the water.. and me.. stunned! There were a few big uns in that shoal.. so I've learnt to be more patient thats for sure!

On the way back I saw a large cuttlefish sat in the sand.. didnt shoot him as I'm not into calamariu really.. I enticed him out by going pretty cloe and he did a kind of ink squirt and sat there next to me changing colour.. never seen one in the UK so another first!

Well.. I'm more hooked now than ever.. back in the water tomorrow I reckon! Stay safe all. J

PS.. does anyone know what the long jelly like things with pink dots are? saw loads today.. strange looking things!

Well done on the fish. it doesn't matter if anyone else has had bigger. Only how you feel about it. Just for the record it looks a very healthy size. Well done. As for me i hate seing sand eels while i am on a dive. I have yet to see a bass when the eels are around. I know bass love to eat them so i guess my time will come. The pink dotted jelly things,.... i dont know. They look cool though and seem to be harmless enough. I have been seeing loads on them every time i dive the south coast.

Taking a day out tomorrow but sunday is looking good for an all day session. Already cleared it with the general and i am clocking up the credits with family time tomorrow.

Kernowsniper - nice fish, bloody well done. It is very clear on the south coast in the St Austell bay area and it has even cleared the blooms over the kelp.

Personally I have seen bass in the vicinity of sand eels, but the larger ones tend to be in or over the kelp looking for the larger food!

Just a quick question, have shot bass and had them come off the shaft and they have gone straight down into the kelp and I have always got them back. Yesterday I shot a mullet of well over 7 lb and it pulled off the shaft and there was blood, meat and scales, but I could not see the fish. Anyone know wether they swim off or stay near the shot? I hate leaving an injured fish the same way as I do when shooting on land.

Hoping to get in today on the south coast although it will depend if the great one grants permission!!!!

Stay Safe

ksniper! , great fish :):):) and the head shot must have been satisfying.

I often stay with the bait fish, especially in the shallows where the Bass often follow. I have used them for cover, but the only warning you get is as they seperate and you then see the Bass on the outside of the shoal. At this time they are usually in nitro mode and difficult to get a shot or have the time to judge the fish. However as I've been bombed by gulls before! Thats a sight to see!

I suffered a few lost fish and was persuaded by forum members to drop my gun after a shot! Great tip! , and have landed even Mullet with gut shots that previously I reckon I would have lost since. I like to have a bouy line to my gun as the viz is generally poor when I fish and still reckon the gun would be lost by a large fish.

I had a scrath around yesterday. Usual story, poor viz but managed a Mullet of around 3lb and picked up a Bass bandit fishing lure :) .. its great finding booty!

Nice fish kernowSniper - very similar to my last session but both of your fish are little bigger. I've also noticed those red-dotted jelly strands and have no idea either - are there any marine biologists out there?
I'm gutted, the water's been getting clearer and clearer all week and I've been in bed with flu since wednesday and have to go to Darwin tomorrow to join a boat for work; I really wanted to get in the water before going but that is out of the question with a temp of 100F.

Happy hunting everyone and maybe bump in to a few of you on my return. :)

well done nice fish. got in south coast yesterday ok viz got 2 good size bass, saw quite a few but couldnt get lined up for a good shot, swam over a rock in about 3 feet of water and saw a massive bass but he was closer to me than the end of my spear and watched him swim off under me, never mind fun dive anyway going out on the kayaks with gutshot tomorrow conditions are looking good
