I posted this question way back in January, and a few kind souls said they might be able to help - I'm currently over from NZ and visiting family in Cornwall next week, but unfortunately the boss wouldn't let me bring my gear. Seemed to think that the kids clothes etc were more important. (And to be fair, my trusty Beauchat could have caused issues in my cabin luggage, and the weight belt would have used up most of the baggage allowance...)

I'd love to get a dive in though. Grew up in Cornwall, never even thought about spearfishing. Moved to NZ, discovered the sport there, and got fully hooked (as you do...!). And have often thought about what it must be like back home.

So basically, I'm just wondering if anyone has a bit of spare kit and is planning a sesh next week at all? Looks like the sou'westerlies will be backing off after the weekend, I can imagine it's all pretty churned up at the mo, but nevertheless... don't ask, don't get, etc!

And, for what it's worth, it'd be my huge pleasure to repay the favour in New Zealand any time. Plenty of spare gear, come out in our boat and shoot kingfish and snapper (and Maomao and john dory and trevally and koheru and collect awesome crayfish and paua and and and) in our boat, around the stunning Bay of Islands...

Duh - yeah, that's a good point. Size 9 feet, about 6' medium build, 75kg...

I have managed to borrow a surfing wettie so I can use that if nothing else around. I doubt that the boss will allow me more than a few hours away anyway...

Went out in St Ives today. Vis was about 3-4m. Looked and looked, but found no white tips. Thousands of spider crabs but all to small to bother with and nothing in the fish department seen or shot.

But hey, I got in.

Hey guys,

Am off down to the Eden project on friday to see the fleet foxes play and will no doubt smuggle the spearing kit into the car!
Does any one have any spots that are worth a try for a few hrs on Friday or Sat morning or even ones to avoid so I dont waste my time!?
Any help would be much appreciated. I did try a place near by a number of years ago with only a few mullet taken.

Well, i've not been spearing for a good while now... Enjoying the old swimming/no fins thing wayyy to much. Here's a couple of pics from this eve, the water and weather were absolutely beautiful!

Beautiful pics, and fair play to you, but I have to concurr with the position on freediving previously expressed on this forum:
Freediving is great, but always best to have a gun in your hand just incase.

Got in to check out a new spot to me last night. Mid south cost that someone suggested last year, and I've only just got there. Didn't see anything to take, but I like the look of the spot and will be trying to get back soon to explore some more. Vis wasn't bad, but the algie was pretty thick in places. Lots of tiny pink jellys too.

Good to get in ojn a nice evening, but gutted that I still haven't had a Bass yet this season.

Got in down South Coast late last night with the boat for a little dive on an offshore mark that's been showing some good fish.. once again it was an epic dive. Saw loads of bass, ended up taking 2 around the 2/3lb mark and a good sized mullet. (I did wait quite a while to see if any anything bigger was gonna show but nothing did so I took a few of the bigger fish from the 50+ strong school). Viz was ok(-ish) maybe 5m and the current was really strong this time due to the bigger tides which made it very difficult to hold position and put in longer holds.. but nevertheless the bass were very active and inquisitive (always a bonus!)

Has anyone used the go pro hd with the flat lens yet? if so is it any good? Ash

Got my GoPro HD set up on my gun again now and filmed last night with flat lens + orange filter in 1080P.. personally I think the quality is very good on these cams.. the vis wasn't great last night and I didn't shoot any stills.. but here's a few frame-grabs from the footage... and yes the video will come.. all in good time!
