Got in today as the tide pushed up to high. I'd been at this spot a couple of times this week without my kit and had seen large numbers of fish cruising about and the seals and birds getting quite excited. Anyway, it was a total mullet fest and they were everywhere. I shot 4 good sized ones and called it a day after about 45 minutes. Managed an early season cock up and sliced through my glove and finger whilst braining a mullet. It's good to get these things out of the way early. Also, the new elios suit was toasty and warm.

What was the viz like ? I was gonna try and get out this weekend but it looked churned up over this end, not long till the bass start to show now.
Talking about gloves I'm in the market for a new pair as my old scuba diving ones ive used for the last few years are looking a little worse for wear, just to get an idea what does everyone else use ?
In my opinion you should avoid the Cressi gloves, as they fall to pieces after the first outing!
I've been using the Mares Tri-Lastic 3/5mm gloves recently, and I am very impressed with them. They are a 5mm glove, which keeps you warm, with a reduced 3mm underside, on the palms, providing the extra dexterity needed for spearfishing.
They also have a smoothskin cuff, around the wrist, which provides a seal when worn inside an open cell wetsuit.

I didn't buy them from this site (I've only posted the link to give you an idea of what they look like), but from a shop local to me, because I wanted to try them on first.
Make sure you go for the 5/3 though (as opposed to the 3/2), as this will provide the best protection, early in the season. If you are out a lot they will eventually wear through at the fingertips, as most soft/flexible gloves do, with the constant loading of spearguns, but by the time this happens you should be well into the warmer water of summertime, if you've treated them well, so it's no big deal.
In the depths of winter I use O'Three Exterme Cold Mitts, with built in trigger finger pocket (but I've only got these because they were in the bargain bucket for a tenner).

The vis was probably pretty good further out but i was in with the surf over mixed sand and boulders and the vis was 2m or so due to the churned up sand and weed etc.
I always tend to just buy the cheapest suitable glove i can find because i always go through them so fast.

Those Mares gloves look pretty good Gaz I like the wrist seals on them.

I'll go to long lengths/pay extra money to keep myself as warm as possible for as long as possible - when my extremities start to to go numb, it tends to take the enjoyment out of the session for me. The warmer/more comfortable I am, the longer I can stay in.

I use these gloves: IST 2mm Amara Palm Gloves by IST all year round.
They have a 2mm back with a tough fabric palm. I normally go through a pair a year. If you can stand the cold then they are excellent, with much more dexterity than a full neoprene glove.

I have been hoping to introduce my self with a big fat bass but have failed and not seen any yet... got in at the weekend on the south coast and thought I'd have a look for some flatties and there they were! shot two and left feeling pretty pleased with myself.
Trying to get in as often as I can so if anyone lives around the St.Austell area fancies a dive, give me a shout..

I tend to spear a lot in the St Austell area if you want to hook up for a dive. Not sure I'm the best person to get you out with only a partial season under my belt.
Gloves wise I've got some thin sailing gloves. Keep my hands warm but nice and flexible. Probably 2mm on the back and a leather type palm.

Those look pretty good Chris, 2mm would be fine for me as the ones I have now are only 3mm.
Finally managed to get my hands on a gopro hd and have been looking at various mounts and wanted to try and get a different view of things than the usual gun mount option, I basically want to try and film wherever I'm looking.
I had an old omer mask lying around and went to work on it with a drill, 1/4 stainless camera mount bolt, rubber washer and gopro tripod mount and came up with this.
I will be testing it out this weekend.

Yeh lol had the misses and kids laughing at me walking round the house and garden and aiming a speargun on the lawn to see if it all lines up nicely.
I've not noticed it pulling down on the mask whilst walking around so it should be great in the water.
I should hopefully get a few vids on here aswell after the weekend, fingers crossed there will be one with me having a showdown with a lobster
Ahh first night dive of the year this evening, lovely! Water was a little milky but otherwise fine. Stayed in for just under an hour, but still managed to see plenty of stuff. Lots of edible and shore crabs, lumpsuckers and a baby conger with a silly smile on it's face snaking its way through the shallows. Highlight though had to be a squid about 9-10 inches long following me for about 10mins, he seemed to love the torch light and wouldn't leave me alone, very cool creature.
Bumped into a shoal of mullet zooming around the shallows as well, and came home with one which is just shy of 50cm.
Anyway lovely to get back in again, forgot how much I love the water Only downer was I seem to have lost my catch bag over the winter, so I had to do a quick bodge and make myself a stringer out of some cable ties and a bit of dyneema!

Den, i think you will just have to be careful to keep your head movements slow and deliberate - its really easy to make too much motion with video - the gun mount does provide a really good stabiliser. Anyway i look forward to seeing the results!
In this afternoon, bit milky, but nice and sunny, saw some crabs, and one shoal of mullet, brought this one home
Saw one that must have been three times the size of this, biggest mullet ive ever seen, would have been tough as old boots I bet.

Been in on the south coast on friday had three mullet 4.5, 3, 2lb and today had another 4lb and one smaller.... Seems to be a lot around finally, althogh not seeing much else silver.. There seems to be plenty of bait fish around but I haven't seen any bass yet, is this common for the bass to come in later? and has anyone else seen any yet on the south coast? I still can't manage to upload any pictures, asks me to allow scripted windows, which i do, then nothing.... any ideas? really enjoy seeing what everyone else is catching and want to show off my whoppers!!!!

yeah, they are generally lesser in number and farther out during the winter, in my experience i generally hear of them coming in closer first up the south coast from selsey, then around bogner, to dorset, plymouth and then to cornwall, usually starts in earnest around early/mid may for me...
