Hey sj, Shame you couldn't make it....yeah did see some sand eels although not as big or plentiful as in summer, still bigish shoals. not sure what the other baitfish were but I'm sure they would taste great if I were a bass and there were millions of them right into the shore.
Vis was better last week although I used the mirk to my advantage these last couple of dives as I went in last Monday only to have the fish see me first and disapear...
Thanks crispin, I imagined them coming up from warmer water rather than up that way...

Managed to get in on the south coast after work for a quick session after all. Vis wasn't too good, but manageable. Only saw wrass but did bag a cock spidercrab that has now been cooked and picked ready for tomorrow nights dinner. Tip top. Sorry I didn't call fishnerd but it was a bit of a quick hour or so and I wasn't sure I'd be getting in.

Got in last weekend and tried out the gopro with the mask mount, Ive also fitted an underwater focus/fix lense but you get slight vignetting in the picture in lower resolutions.
Heres a vid of a plaice I shot, I also managed a spider crab and lobster but realised afterwards that I'd ran out of space on the 4 gig memory card that came with it, Ive got a 32gb memory card now so plenty of room for next time.
At the end of the video it looks like I'm stroking the fish lol, it had lots of red flecks on its white side just wondered at the time if they rubbed off

Hey all... really starting to feel the urge to get in the water for some hunting now.. suns out.. waters warming up and from what I hear the fish are slowly starting to show. Any ideas on what the viz has been like over the south coast.. over in Newquay we've got small to medium swell and it's not been looking that great and ye olde divegenie.com seems to have dissapeared making it a tough call whether to make the drive east or south.. any help greatly appreciated!!

Just got back from a week in Turkey. No spearing as it is impossible to track a local guide down. Local laws state you nead them but the locals dont know about it! :head

Looking good for some spearfishing action this week. Been working on some statics and it is going ok after a winter with illness and bad fitness. I will be doing a freedive course soon to push be bounderies as i have some marks around the 20-25m range i intend to spear. Time to go for the big stuff. I will be doing lots more filming this year too!

Can't stress enough how much of a different ball game this is, you might want to share those marks with a few people who can drag you up from that depth if it all goes tits.

I have done freedive course before and dived comfortably to 30m but that was with Howard and there was no certification. I am aiming to update my skills and technique. I am not intending on diving alone either! Once the diving exceeds 10m i dive with the buddy system.

yeah I'm not trying to preach to you don't get me wrong, it was just the phrases "Im going to do a course" followed by "push the boundaries" that got my attention, just a friendly nudge to stay safe really, i'd say the same thing to anyone I didn't want to see kark it. Where did you say those marks were again?

The loss of Dive Genie is a real shame. I watched that like a hawk last year and found it a really useful guide.

I'm off next week and the missis wants to camp. I'm trying to work out which coast to nudge towards. Long range suggests small swell so could this be my chance to hit the north coast? Or do I play it safe and stick to my regular marks?

Either way, I'd be pleased to see some fish back.

Got in on the north coast yesterday. Left it too late really and the tide was already very high. Vis was patchy with virtually no vis on the surface but opening up to about 2-3m on the bottom. Saw a great number of schoolies and had only one opportunity on a good sized fish which i managed to miss. Great start to the season though, don't think i've ever seen so many fish so early on.

I have been a bit slack so i kicked myself into the water today. First dive of the year and first bass too! Saw 2 but the second was too small but the other was well on size at about 2lb. Watched it swim past me while i tried to figure if i should take him the i dived and called him back in. On a closer look he seem good to go so he is chilling out in the fridge till tomorrow.

Promising start to the season!!

Got in yesterday too over the south coast.. only saw a couple of bass.. let them pass under me and then went down to hide.. they never came back.. gutted.. both good size. generally good vis tho for the 1st dive of the year.. looking forward to getting my 1st bass of the season!!

hey gutshot, can you enlighten me in your bass calling technique? I've heard people making noises under the water, or tapping rocks to get them curious. I'm never sure that if I don't shoot, the noise of me going up for a breath and diving again will spook them... Do they always stick around? thanks si

It all depends on the situation really. Its not only noises that grabs their attention but sometimes how you handle yourself on a dive. As for the noises sometimes i will make a thumping sound in my throat and others i will gently twang my gun rubbers. The mullet seem to prefer the rubber twanging. If you have a fish that wont come any closer then try to slowly hide deeper behind your chosen stalking spot. I may have the teminology wrong but to me they are all ways of "calling" the bass to get closer. Different methods work better in certain situations.
