Got in this afternoon for a quick dive, visibility was well over 10 meters but no fish seen, although Im almost certain I seen a large squid jet past below me doing a good job of blending into the sand.
Going to take my SIB out over the weekend for its first run, think I will take some squid jigs along with me and see if anything comes up.

(Soft Inflatable Boat) Its a Honwave 3.5 metre Ive just finished kitting it out with a fishfinder, GPS, VHF etc, its more for spearfishing some (inaccessible by foot) locations Ive searched out over the winter, but seeing a squid today and being told they are about for the next couple of months has got me curious.

I have had a squid jig for a while, but never had the chance to use it. Any idea on where when and technique. I had thought it was generally night people fished for squids but may well be wrong. It looks like another run of surf due for the weekend, but am down in Penzance again the weekend after this, so may well put the yak on the roof.
And respect for getting in! I had been tempted last week as we had some flat days, but it just felt too cold for spearfishing!

Thanks Pav, I remember watching a hugh fearnley W program a few years back and they went out deep squid jigging somewhere off Cornwall on some little boats and from what I remember it was early morning with daylight.
March and April are supposed to be the time when they are about in good numbers, so nows as good a time as any to give it a go.

Looks like they hold squid jigging championships over here so its gotta be worth a try
I was very pleased to find my outboard starting first turn of the key this afternoon after a long winter idle. Think i'll take it as a good omen. Might have to follow your lead and take it for a quick spin this week.
Managed to get out for a good run on the boat today, had a quick try for squid on the jigs but no joy.
After having a bit of a play motoring around I found a remote beach that looked like it had potential so I chucked the wetsuit on, first dive down and right below me was a slab of a flounder and on the next 3 dives the same thing happened, seen a couple of scallops scattered on the bottom but left them there for another time.
Looks like it will be a good spot when the bass come in.
Just need a trailer now as setting the bloody thing up from the boot of a small hatchback and packing it away afterwards is no fun.

Nice one Dennis! only 4 weeks to go till our new boat arrives - been a long time coming but will be down your way for a test drive in April

James I’m sure that you said before but what engine are you going to stick on the new boat? And who’s going to fit it on?
Looks the mutts nuts though, might have to come and have a closer look at it when you’ve got it all done out as the itch for a new something is starting to increase again!:head

We are fitting the two-stroke, 50Hp Mariner off my RIB onto the boat. We'll see how it goes, but it was given a big thumbs up by the manufacturer to be a good fit - hopefully it'll fly along like the RIB used to. It can't get here soon enough now
