Got in on the south coast last night.
Vis was ok but not great. Saw a few small Bass but shot nothing.
Did achieve my deepest recorded dive. Pretty lame by most of your standards, but I was quite pleased with 7.8m. It was the bottom stopping me going any deeper.

I've been doing this sport for three seasons now and can only get to 8.2m as my record so don't be hard on yourself! There are plenty of decent fish and shells to be had in those depths - my freezer is always full and my friends are always well fed. Ears and the mind are the only limiters!

I know I've been over this before but I'm on a break in a couple of weeks and will be diving a spot that is always frequented by several seals. I've had hassles, but no contact!
What is the risk of injury from seal love at this time of year?

If you are looking to extend your depth pb I would highly reccomend doing a freediving course (did mine with Saltfree who I personally would reccomend, they now do courses in Cornwall) as not only will it extend your pb and teach you the correct techniques about breath up, saftey and a bit of the anatomy of the diving it will also massivly improve your confidence.
The first day you do a pool session which involves swimming up and down the pool etc and the better bit which is the static (floating on the surface and holding your breath), and thats when you learn what it actually feels like to run out of air which you start twitching involentarily not when you think you have run out.
I used to think that a diving pit in a swimming pool at 6m was deep, and then I started spearing and get deeper and got a bit spooked. But after the course (which you are limited to 20m) my confidence massivly improved and know have no qualms about deep or longer dives.
After going back for a few more sessions and a bit of depth progression my pb's are now 37m for Constant Weight (Fins) and 25m for No-Fins. This is with no more training than just going out spearing. There are differences to just swimming up and down a line and spearing, but it does give me the confidence to do a 10m+ dive and sit of the bottom for a while spearing and know that I will be ok.
For example I was freediving (no fins) the other day around the devil's frying pan and swam down and thought it was a bit deep and saw it was 9.4m on my computer! Before i did the course I would have panicked and rushed to the surface, but instead I was able to enjoy being at the bottom and go back up when I wanted to.
The main thing I would say I took from the course is confidence to go deeper, if I do feel like im short on air relax and swim slowly (swimming fast is a really bad idea!) and also what it actually feels like when you are running out of air not what you think it feels like.
So basically doing a course i did with Saltfree Divers was one of the best things I did for my spearing.
Skinners brewery tour later and a night dive on Saturday, the weekend is looking good already :friday

To be honest I'm not too hung up on depth, but was pleased to be getting comfortable getting deeper. I struggle to find water much deeper on any of my regular spots. Not to mention that my Sunto that I dive with is only meant to record to 10m.
I guess it would be good to max it out some time, just for the sake of it, but really, in these fish lean times (for me at least) I'm enjoying getting more and more comfortable going deeper and staying down longer. Still no big shakes, just glad to be improving. I'd still class myself as a surface hunter but I feel i'm moving towards being more versitile.
Would be nice to be distracted by some fish soon though!
I'll keep my fingers crossed that those Tuna head my way.

Hi all,
I thought it was time to introduce myself after all the "lurking in the background" I've been doing. I Live just outside Camborne and try to get in the water a couple of times a week, I'm 19 and studying Mining Engineering at Camborne School of Mines (which means I get to stay here all year round!) My style seems to be mostly going snorkelling and if I see anything worth taking then I will. However this has left my parents laughing at me when coming home empty handed most of the time haha
I have a few friends who I go with but despite persuading them to the extent of boring them, none have joined up on deeperblue. It's a shame because it seems like such a good, friendly community (especially in comparison to some of the other forums I have been a member of).
I've got a 5m Rib and likely to be taking it over to the scillies a bit later in the summer, will obviously be taking my kit too. Anyone been spearfishing over there before? Been plenty of times for breaks but never been in for the fish!
Anyway, Try and go easy on me, I'm looking to get better, not get scared away!

Im really out of shape at the moment , been drinking and smoking for .... 3 months ?
Still managed a few 10m dives today , and STILL no decent fish , im jinxed this year im sure.
But had the most amazing dive with the seals afterwards, spent an hour playing with the friendliest seal ive ever met, amazing. Video to follow at some point.

Thanks for the warm welcome, its interesting stuff. I guess you're referring to the islands history of silver mining, read a little about it but usually end up getting swamped with information of my local area when searching for the older mines!
Would anyone be able to suggest the best tide to visit Prussia? It's the only place I really go at the minute because I haven't been for a big coastal search and have been told by some people to go at low and others at high tide.... anyone able to shed some light on it?

I’m not from your neck of the woods but have done a bit down there from time to time, from my few dives down at Prussia i’ve found that high water has been the best, shot a few Bass down there following the reef out and hunting in between the kelp.
Nice spot but tis a bugger of a walk with wetsuit and weights on.

I still never see fish like some of these videos which you guys put up though! I know its a heller of a walk but it shall have to do until I find some better spots. At least the scenery is nice enough for me to enjoy when I get out of the water empty handed all the time!

Welcome Epic. You'll get lots of good advice on DB. If you get the chance to dive with someone with years of experience that will obviously be invaluable.

I had a nice Bass and a nice Mullet yesterday....in foil on the BBQ. Eldest boy was 21 and Mrs Bish was.....best not say eh. Shiny1 was missing so he was either plugging, shooting, spearing or ??????
