Well got in this afternoon. Was wet by about 1.30 with the tide starting to ebb. Sea had a bit of wind blown chop but not too bad, vis to start was 2-3m. Didn't see alot of life but managed to bag a nice 2lb'er about 20 mins in. 15mins later I stoned a beautiful 4lb fish. It was quite a short fish for its weight but very broad. Vis was now patchy varying from 2 to 4m in places. Carried on for another hour or so but only added a 1 1/2lb golden grey to the stringer. Very pleasent dive.
Night dived on of my regular spots last night, viz was around 3-5m. Where have all the fish gone!?
Not sure if it was the very low tide, or the stormy weather... Most of the eel grass beds where everything seems to hang out had been ripped up. No bass, just loads of smelt, a small lemon sole and a John Dory. Usually see loads of cuttlefish and flatties, but I didn't see any!

Viz 3 to 5m and cloudy/suspended particles. But totally fishable. Saw a huge shoal of 30 to 40cm bass, too small (video later) and saw a john dory - so cool. Had funny "no no after you I insist" moment with a spider crab that took me by surprise haha

hello all, im after abit of advice if anybody could help, i went for a little walk around the lizard today and seen a couple of beaches/ coves that looked like they had abit of potential. also was thinking perhaps the main point would be worth a go. Does anyone know what its like of there (actually worth it, and tides etc) as i dont want to go for a dive and get caught out by the tides or something. cheers dan
Got in this evening on the rising tide in the north east lizard, vis 2m and sea full of gooseberries and quite cold (rain?). Pollock wrasse and a trillion sandeels seen but no silver. picked up some big spiders but all female so watched them glide back into the depths in their alien way. Pleasant dive, frustrated by the vis and lack of silvers as the spot felt fishy. Seems to be the story of my life with spearfishing - noyhing worth shooting! Breath holds and equalisation slowly improving though, progress is just as good as catching fish. Where to go tomorrow?
Falmouth bay today over low tide, spider crab about 3lbs currently cooling after cooking to be transformed into a crab linguine dish, and just had a pollock buttie (was 41cm). Vis about 3m, sea was cold. Only silver seen were sandeels but saw an albino pollock?!!
I'm close to cracking with this sport, I can only dive from the shore because can't afford a kayak, and don't know anyone with a rib - how do you find bass and mullet from the shore? Haven't seen a decent bass ever.
Crab question - when I popped it in the water to cook it shed a few legs and a claw... subsequently the water went a bit green and looked like the water looks after an egg cracks when you boil it

Your albino pollock may be a whiting, see quite a few night diving. Spider crabs are delicious, prefer them to edible crabs. I usually pull the legs and claws off to boil, and discard the shell. Not sure if you can eat the meat in the shell.
I fully sympathise with your bass issues! I rarely see anything of a takeable size during the day. Best thing I did was start night diving. Seemingly lifeless places in the daytime can be full of a variety of life at night. The bass can come right up into the rocks as well. Most anglers seem to catch bass during early morning or dusk when the fish come out to feed. Makes sense that the same follows for spearfishing.

Yeah I do a lot of beachcasting so have caught thousands of whiting and that did cross my mind but this was white along the back, my first thought was it was a giant red mullet as they often look white (at least to me) but then it had pollock form.... anyway could just have been a diseased fish? I've had some good bass on the rod, like you say at first light as thats when they hunt most, dusk good too though. What I'm really after is an inshore reef where they chill during the day, like bognor or Portland. Depending on where you're located Tom if you want to buddy up for a night dive I would be keen at some point, need to buy a torch though!

I feel compelled to write this recipe as I have just re-entered from food nirvana.
Cook, cool and pick one spider crab including the gooey brown meat. Chop finely half a large red Chilli, 2 spring onions, a clove of garlic and a die sized cube of ginger. Boil 100g of linguine and meanwhile heat the chopped veg and Chilli in a tbsp olive oil and a die sized knob of butter for 5 minutes. Then add the crab meat, juice of half a small lemon and 50ml dry white wine. Heat through until wine has reduced, remove from heat. Strain the linguine when al dente, mix in the crabby sauce with a few sprigs of flat leaf parsley and torn basil.
Devour.
Serves 1 hungry diver

There's quite a bit of meat in the main body where the legs join. I've had almost as much meat from the body as the legs. The very very icky looking tomalley, in the main body, is also delicious, but if you're not into strong flavours probably needs diluting. Don't forget the eggs on the females - they're pretty darn good too.
