Cornwall 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Loving reading the thread at the moment and seeing things appear to be developing, currently back out in the middle east until August.......... Can't wait to get in when I return!

Father said he saw two spearos getting in at Gorran Haven yesterday, any one on here? getting in tomorrow morning with my 11 year old son over high tide. fingers crossed.

Got in today. Viz a hazy 3.5-4m, strong current and only a glimpse of what looked like a school of marginally undersize bass that whizzed by in the distance without having the decency to wait while I measured them. Damn. The wife has been telling people that I come home with nothing 90% of the time. Bloody cheek, and a damn lie. I am now keeping a record. Today doesn't help though. And it adds weight to her argument of "why spend more money on gear when it doesn't make a difference to how much you catch." That's false too. Everyone knows that the amount that you spend on gear and the amount of fish that you catch are directly proportional.

I got in today too. Very patchy viz but plenty of small bass about, took two of the larger ones for tea. Looks like the bigger fish have moved on to pastures new. Think I'll have to dust off the sib and venture further a field

Well you'd better pray they didn't come my way. The local f****ing netters illegally took 200 stone of bass out of the edge of the estuarine nursery area. Bloody slaughter, they had salmon and sea trout too. Netted 500 metres across the river mouth and were gone before light. Boasting in the quayside ice room a little too freely!

Tribs

Mourning for our slaughtered quarry.

Been a long time since I posted, had fairly uneventful season until last night. Thought I would pop in near Falmouth after work, was working hard but seeing nothing, though I'd try a different spot nearby do had a long swim over some sand keeping my eyes peeled for flatties, about to give up when I saw something interesting in the sand, levelled the spear an bam, my first thorn back ray in the bag, it's a bit like swimming towing a parachute, and the slime is something else. Didn't manage to weigh it, but was longer than my gara's. Anyone got any recipe ideas??

I had one last summer and did this with it:

remove the wings and then skin them.

place them on some foil, liberally cover in lightly salted butter, capers, black pepper and parsley. make an airy foil parcel around the wings so they aren't suffocated, but wrap the edges tighly together so no steam escapes. 20 minutes at 170, fan oven. While they cook you can make a shallot, black pepper, lemon and cream sauce. Goes well with some proper crispy chips or some buttery mashed potato

Just keep tasting the sauce as you cook it so you don't go to far with the flavours! I think what I did was sweat the shallots in butter, add about 100ml chicken stock and 100ml single cream, pepper, juice of half a lemon and then reduce over 15 or so minutes. Some dry white chardonnay would go nicely in the sauce too, 50ml wine to 50ml stock.

enjoy and well done, have some rep (if I can give any, all my rep-ees seem to still be on 0 hmmm)

Honestly it was delicious, just go for it,

Thanks for tips, did something similar to what you suggested, was very tasty, will be keeping an eye open for more.

If anyone wants to get in for a dive between the 23rd July and the 6th of August please drop me a line. I'll be in the UK for a few weeks and I would love to get out to some new spots! Thanks

Got in at Falmouth bay over low water this evening, quick half hour dip and managed this 3lb bass as I saw his head sticking out the stringweed. Saw another of identical size which came to me twice but cunningly it stayed ahead of my spear and I couldnt track onto him. Fair play bass I doff my cap to you. Saw some sea trout and small flounder too. Vis was a milky, wobbly (halocline?!) 2-4m

Got in after work quickly to test a new GoPro dive housing which arrived (unexpectedly!) today at the office. Here's a dive using it, the clarity is very good and as far as off-the-shelf blurfixes go its actually one of the more affordable options at £45.

No fish seen really though, some big wrasse but despite wanting to make a Goan fish curry I still haven't sacked up enough to shoot one!

Does anyone know how to embed youtube??!

Went in for a quick dive after work in the Fal area yesterday, first proper session this year (bar the odd night dive) and was pleasently surprised. Breath hold was not too shocking and managed 2 pollack, by no means a PB but happy for my first session of the year, vis was 2-3m at best.

Also while scouting out around a stack had spooked what looked like a mullet which cruised off, and in the situation was unsure if i should hold and try and 'call' it back or try and move off and take a shot. It was not moving off too quick but by the time I had made up my mind it was gone. What do you rekcon is best to do in that low vis or high vis ? If they spook is there any chance of them coming back ? Or best to go after and take the chance with a shot ?

Also found a fishing rod float while I was out there and on an impluse tied it to the handle of the gun and made an improv float, by a complete fluke the line left on made it when hunting at 10m after taking a shot I could let go of the gun and the float would mark at the surface where the gun was.

Normally with that low vis I would not want to let go for fear of not finding it again, but this meant I could stay down for a bit longer as I knew I could let go of the gun and swim to the surface, letting the fish run into the weed and pick it up after taking a breath. Normally I prefer to pick the fish up asap as less chance they will wriggle off the spear and can dispatch them quicker.

I now quite like the idea of having a float, but found the fishing line loved getting tangled with my leg if I was not careful to keep it away and not swim over the line.
I like the fishing float I have (5" long, bright orange and white) as its small but easy to see at the surface.
Suggestions with the line I should use ? Thinking it needs to be hard to see for the fish, easy to cut but strong enough to hold to the gun when released. It does describe the line I currently have but if anyone has any suggestions of something better ?

A lot of us up this end always attach our guns to a float using 5 meters of clear aquarium air tube sealed at both ends, then attached to the standard red/orange line that comes with the floats.

Nobby and I have used 250lb clear mono threaded through 5 meters of clear aquarium tube with swivels at each sealed end. Works a treat no tangles ever again!!! hit a big bass let go surface and just follow the float.

Nobby uses a beast of a float (almost a rubber dinghy) 'dive hunter' and I use the immersion float board. Both floats give you a sense of security when out far on long dives and of course at night. You can also get some nice down the line rides on some nice little clean waves on your way back in.

Maybe thin nylon cord would workr, hoping to get out later today so hopefully might see a few fish around. Got a set of carbon fins that I want to try out too :)

My set up is basically the same as Speerolee except that I use some green nylon float line, which I think OThree has some. Is about 3 or 4mm thick is quite rigid & doesn't tangle too much. If your nylon cord is too thin & "floppy" for want of a better word, then it may be more susceptible to entanglement.

As a student I am trying to do spearing on the cheap, (once I have a job many a shiny toy will be bought) Only just replaced my bands which have been in use for 4 seasons and show it !

Like the sound of the clear aquarium tube as it will be a lot less likely to get caught, as the fishing line tended to get caught on the clip of my ankle weights a lot.

My thought with keeping the line was clear is, that if the line is coloured then it is likely to be noticed and then the eye will naturally follow it to its end (to myself or the float). Im not sure if this would be a help (they may want to investigate more) or a hiderance (get seen and scoot away).

This is assuming fish think that way ?

Went in the fal bay area yesterday afternoon, and there must have been some dredging recently as the vis was 1m at best, not a plakton bloom as just as bad at 1m and it was at 9m.
