Ah ok well I think I will just have to make to make the most of it! Ive read abit about Porthminster reef being popular with scuba divers and holding a few fish. I guess I am banking on the headland to be good! Anyone catching much in cornwall at the moment? Apart from lee ..

Porthminster reef is ok... Headland always plagued by seals... Only seen small pollock and edible crab there! A few small mullet on the way round from the pier too...

Thought you guys might like this... put it together a while back but never released it...

Ok cool thanks for the info! I will put up some dive reports once I get there! (If there is anything to catch)

Okay, dived a north coast spot. Vis looked okay from above but this place suffers badly from localised patches of poor visibility on high tides which is sadly when this spot needs to be fished. As expected then vis was from literally 0m to 6m but I imagine other spots would be better still. Slight swell but nothing too bad. Saw a number of bass, some smaller and one considerably bigger that I missed. Swam about a mile from the entry point and exited at a slightly less hideous cliff path ascent. Tough climb back up and was glad I missed the bigger fish. Also saw plenty of mullet of varying sizes. Nice dive and a good work out :)

I got out this morning for an early one before work thinking there could be a bass on the cards at dawn.

wrong

Oh well, did find a good 34cm John Dory which I'm about to fillet for dinner.
You can judge me if you want for shooting a JD (easy targets etc etc) but they're delicious and that's what we do this for right? Plus he was tucked up under a rock at 9m and I got up at 4.30am - certainly not as easy as going to the fish monger ;)

Vis was a milky 4-6m - usual low tide cloudyness but nothing particulate ie plankton/algae so all in all, happy dive. Just a fearful lack of fish :/

*** edit. New post material below.

This is kind of worthy of its own post, but just to say I did the AIDA 2 star with Saltfree Divers over the weekend at the NDAC at Chepstow. After doing the course, it seems obvious that this should be on the radar of anyone who seriously spearfishes. The course offers so much in the way of safety, physiology, equalization, experience, the sharing of knowledge and enthusiasm, and of course getting to know your limits in a safe environment. If you've not done a course, you really should consider it. I went up there on my own knowing nobody and felt very welcomed even as a complete rookie. As far as spearfishing is concerned the program will help you realise your deep diving potential and teach you how to do this safely with a buddy. How often have you wanted to go deeper but were unsure? Now's the chance, really can't fault it at all, and the facilities are amazing too. Hot showers and a cafe serving hot food on site, a dedicated freediving platform, clear water to 82m deep with amazing visibility and buddies you can trust. Personally I managed a meagre PB of 16m - probably double what I ever usually dived to before (it sounds deeper in feet, 53.3ft)

get on it!

Great to hear you had a good dive. Bass are slow to show this year. Going to try again tomorrow, going to pick my son up from school and take him in to chase the spiders!

Im guessing some have checked out facebook and liked, who's who then? I'm Toby....if that helps start thi.gs off.

If anyone is getting in in St. Ives at any point in the next month just give me a shout! Could do with some guidance in these parts!

Thanks

Better post incase I hit that double figure Bass this year for the FOM! Been on a surf / spear road trip and got in nr. Falmouth. Damn that waters clear! Do I need to remind myself that viz gets better than 2m in other parts of the southwest! Just a handful of Mullet for me which got me warmed up but missed where the Bass were hiding. The water is still feeling cold to me. Is it my old bones or is something wrong?

I was at Portscatho monday (work) and the water looked very nice ,calm and clear after the dreadful weekends weather in Devon, I am on holiday next week so may visit here and other Cornish spots ,weather conditions allowing , it has been a very late/slow start to the season for me .

Have you dived porthscatho before ?or that area of the south coast ?i found it calm and sheltered with pritty good vis. I'm back down again late sept for a weeks holiday.

I have not dived Portscatho , but nearby, great vis but no fish !!! I may take a trip out to gull rock, offshore , by kayak ,I have no idea if it is any good but looks worth a try !! Terry...

Bass are very slow to show this year and very localised. I was in first thing straight after night shift. Conditions looked good but viz was disappointing. After just 10mins I saw and missed a lunker of a Bass in the 7-10 lb range. Typical senario, fish appears out of the gloom straight ahead and turns left, the gun's pointing a bit to the left and no matter how hard I try I can't track quick enough to catch up before it scarpers.
After that it was pretty baron until I found a couple of fish hovering in the weed. One Bass of around 2.5-3 lb now residing in the fridge.
If the weather stays nice I'll be at East Portholland beach on the weekend with the family so will report if the bass have turned up. Should be mullet about though.
Never tried Gull rock or Nare head but always fancied it. The Whelps run off seaward from the rock and if you are a proficient free diver the wreck of the Hera lies just inside in about 15m of water.

Not just you, I still think the sea is about 3-4 weeks behind where it should be.

Scallywag , thanks for mentioning the Hera , I googled it and got a good idea of exactly where it is, so with good vis and a low tide I will give it a go !! Terry....

You can also dive the U-Boats in Falmouth if you're in the area.
There are loads of shore/kayak diveable wrecks along the south coast of Devon and Cornwall.
From Bolt Tail to Bolt Head there are at least 7 that I can think of that can possibly be done in a day with a kayak.
If you don't mind a bit of a paddle, the Scylla and the James Egan Layne in Whitsand Bay can be dived easily.
