Ladies and gentlemen, I have poured over page after page of tips on this site, cobbled together some half decent gear and am now chomping at the bit to make my maiden voyage with the spear this Thursday

Just wondering whether anyone knows what the vis might be like in the Fowey area/south coast later this week? I imagine the rivers are running pretty clear right now and there isn't much wind about so hoping it could be a peach

Many thanks to all the posters, this site is a treasure trove of info!!

Hi Village. Living where you do I expect you know all about sea conditions so I'll apologise now if I'm teaching you to suck eggs!
Fowey is a great location to spear from, the thing that will ruin the fishing around here is Easterly winds, It'll stir the sea into soup. This years season is a bit behind because of the cold weather so don't be put off if you get in to be greeted with a whole lot of nothing. Having said that I heard a whisper last night that the bass were just starting to show. Do you have access to a boat? if so Cannis rock is a mark that holds a good stock of fish and Atlantic bay is stunning. Google local webcams to monitor the sea state and keep a close eye on XC weather for the wind direction and strength. Don't be put off if the water isn't gin clear, often a bit of murk helps the fish to be more relaxed. Good luck and stay safe.

Long time and no posts and so hello all! For what it's worth I was in Fowey last Thursday and the vis looked awesome. I was overlooking Readymoney beach and the rocks either side. I also drove through on Sunday and it looked like it may have been blown out a bit - since then the wind has been down though, so you may be in luck.

Diving from Fowey, try the rocks to the left hand side of Readymoney, and also those below the castle on the right. Should you fancy a walk, head over to Coombe or Polridmouth which are about 15 - 20 mins walk along the costal path. Both are much less sheltered, but the ground is much more rewarding to fish. I spear each of these regularly, but haven't managed to get in yet this year.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on!

Hahah great to be here (must learn how to do those little bandit faces)

Scallywag that's great news thanks for the whisper, certainly looks like the cold spell put the whole of mother nature back a month or so. A mate of mine has a boat so he is going to keep an eye on me from the boat fishing while I will be on the bottom grabbing his lures and giving him a heart attack!! Re the cannis, do you mean the shallower area from the headland to the cannis or further out? We've caught some hefty wrasse between pridders and the cannis and found codling mack and baby pollack towards the buoy but never found a bass (to be fair I can't fish for toffee)

Huw thanks a lot as well, I've fished the kantoeng wreck one or twice and pulled up so many old broken-off fishing lines that I think I might wait until I'm a bit more familiar with using knives underwater!! Already drooling over Coombe for a night dive but first things first, need to survive the first effort! Will be sure to report back about vis and fish if there are any... cheers,
Village

It is long time no post Huw...everyone coming out of hibernation!
I managed to jump in yesterday evening up in Newquay and opened my account with a couple of mullet. Large shoals generally sunbathing in close and not timid as it became frustrating trying to see through them for the potential bass...none seen. Vis was patchy but clearing to 6m in areas. I saw only one spider where usually we would have quite a few more by now! Enjoy, it's slowly waking up.

Hi All

Sorry in advance if you see this posted on various threads.

I have not been diving in the UK for a while but want to get back into the water in the UK and I have a few days off work from 17th of May to 23rd and was looking to do some spearfishing on the South coast (poss Dorset or Cornwall). I used to be in the LIC and have just rejoined. I would like to be diving with a buddy. I have wheels and a 3.2m inflatable that should plane well (It's new so I am hoping) with a 10hp on the back so don't mind driving to wherever if the diving is worth it. I am reasonably competent and like bass so if anyone has some spare time during the above dates and wants to go hunting then please let me know.

Thanks

Any one managed to spear a monkfish, heared that occasionaly they come closer in. That is my aim for the summer!

Do you mean angelfish? monkfish are a rare species & generally considered as poor eating however some chefs do call anglerfish monkfish!!

Heading down to Praa Sands for a few days camping this weekend and going to bring my paddleboard and fishing gear for an explore even if the reports don't suggest it is too fishy at the moment. A new pair of carbon blades arrived today from fins4u so I am itching to try them out.
It looks pretty good just off the right hand side of the beach on google maps, would appreciate from anyone who knows the area well any pointers or local knowledge, currents etc or if there are any other good easily accessible local spots (preferably near places I can drop the girlfriend off at, to keep her entertained)
Jim

Right so I had my first foray today on the south coast and I think the vis was pretty pretty good, I think about 8 metres, certainly one of the clearer days when looking down from the boat

No fish even seen but still had a cracker practicising sitting in the kelp - its so colourful when you get within a couple of feet!!! :D all in all I had feared there might not be any fish about but you had to start somewhere and I have learned loads so hopefully I'll see something tasty soon. I am now a dab hand at murdering plastic bags!:martial

What I've learnt today:
Webbing belts for £6 from amazon are a waste of time. Getting a Marseillaise.
I need to stop smoking and/or do a great deal of work on my lungs.
6kg isn't enough weight for 4-6m dives.
Kelp is actually great, not just a tackle gobbler.
Open cell suits kick the pants off a surf suit with a separate hood.
Not having a stringer does not mean you will spear a fish :hmm

Hopefully I will be able to post a fish pic one day!

Hit my northcoast secret spot again tonight. Slight swell (very slight) but adequate visibility and a rising tide filling in around the rocks. Swam a fair way from the entry point before I saw some fish but a large number of mullet kept my attention. Busily trying to get into the mullet when I realised the rescue helicopter was slowly hovering over me and the inshore lifeboat was suddenly just a hundred or so yards out the back. Really hoped they weren't there on my behalf and luckily they weren't. Theirs was a more sombre quest with divulging too much info. Anyway, drama over I started heading back and managed a mullet and five minutes later a bass which was lying low in sandy gully. Pretty stoked. The cliff path near killed me but worth it.

Keep at it Village, and quit those evil fags. They're just not fashionable anymore. It gets a lot fishier than it is just now.

Anyone been in around Looe today , a vis report would be appreciated !!! might head that way tommorrow.

Yes indeed!
Anyone know of any wrecks around the south cornish coast. Looking for conga this summer, loaded up with an american style gun 7.5mm spear, I think that this is probably one of the only UK fish that put up a gritty fight. Next summer, will be doing some deep, very deep dives for the chance at a Ling or large Cod!

Back in the water in hunting mode. South coast nr. Falmouth. Clear and bait fish around.
