Creature feature

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Aaahhhaaa. Mullet. Our mullet here is pure silvery white with big eyes and more pronounced V on the tail. Not as thick, more slim than urs. The only way we eat mullet is by pressure cooking it so that all the bones can be eaten. A popular Tuna bait for long liners. I saw twice in the water one 5kg that go away and caught 1kg 2 weeks ago.

People here cultivate mullet close to shore in brackish water for sales, same water like the tiger prawn we export.

On the Salmon......hell no way it will ever be in my water..........here too hot man. But i love eating salmon...yummy..yummy !!!!!!!!!!!!

You sound like one of those persons we call "King pelicans". rofl

I was very picky when chosing my girlfriend you know. She's also a "Pelican" and is ready to kill someone for a fish...
So she gets all my catch....

I personally do not eat any fish, other than our bonito...

I tend to freak in kelp or weed forests anyway, I guess I dont like enclosed underwater spaces.. But some Exorcist style fish swimming by... that the recipe for a serious case of the hebbiegebies..

Still I guess it can't be worse than diving in a known Great White area and seing a massive shape. Thank the Big Pumpkin it was only a 3.5m Bronzie..

And remember to follow the beer barbecue recipe: One for the barbie and 5 for you!

How can I tell?

I have never seen a shark in my life! The only species we have here is the Piked dogfish. And they hang out close to shore only during the winter (in some 6C water - not very smart of them).

There was a Hammerhead cought by fishermen once, but that was north in Romania.

So I'm kind of happy in my little sharkless world!

Fatlipus Uglycus?

Some kind of reef fish I am sure. Probably hunted in caves? I am sure it has some good sized teeth under those lips... And by looking at its fins I can tell that it rarely swims far from the sea bottom...
 
that resembles our species here in florida called the hogfish which is in the wrasse family.

and i thought ours were ugly!

nice feather dusters. we've got some here but the colors are pretty bland. try reducing your shutterspeed a tad(only if you want this different effect). the colors will richen and more of the polyps in the fore/background will be in focus(i'm sure you already know that, though). have you tried playing with the exposure adjustment controls at all? they work great for underwater subjects. also, the spot metering is a great tool.

i'm too far away from subjects like these. or anything for that matter. my love for my job's fighting w/ my love for the ocean right now.

Thanks Andrsn , am still getting to know the camera , using mainly auto settings . Will be taking camera along on scuba , have more time to experiment that way .
Will I have to submit those in scuba forum ?
 
Ugly Fish?

Well you guys werent too far off the mark. Im pretty sure its related to the hogfish family.

The fish is a Paristiopterus labiosus, commonly called "Giant Boarfish". They can grow to 1m in length and typically live in depths of up to 200m . So you can imagine I was bit puffed when I came up after nailing it...


Luckily it was only down about 16-17m so no sweat really.
Its also very good eating and a much sought after fish (along with its smaller cousin the "Longsnout Boarfish") here in NSW.
