Diving Sept 22??

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
If we can, can we go where there is some better visibilty? I'm getting tired of the 5' - 10' stuff at Green Lake. The fish are there, but it is all snap shots. Like I said before, I'm not 100% that I can go, but I will keep following the post.

Gene

My thought is to hope for Lake Michigan. Thursday and Friday should tell us how it will shape up. I understand that having a place locked down is nice, but I'm flexible on this one. What ever comes up as the best place to dive and get some fish shot.

I may end up not going with you guys as my Dad wants to try for some late Salmon off Sheboygan...I will probably go spearing out of Sheboygan after fishing for salmon, but that is quite a poke from IL...It is not locked in yet, but getting close.

I want to get my son on Lake Michigan for some good vis...looks like the weather is going to be nice (80's) this next week, so the surface temp should be good for him (doesn't have a freediving suit yet...ordering Elios soon). I will put him in 2 regular 2 mm wet suits + an open cell 2mm hooded vest...should allow him to experience it...I may even let him use my elios...if he is nice to me. rofl

Scott, you better hope you start getting some large numbers of rough fish, I feel an itchy trigger finger getting ready to do some serious damage. :martial We have until 12/31 for the 2007 contest...the count down is on! :ko

Gene

Gene - In regards to the 2007 Contest - The way I see it...........I've only just begun :martial- People are going to say "Stop! you've lost your mind! No one can shoot that many carp! And, PUT SOME PANTS ON!!!!" But that's THEIR problem.

'DING' - Round 1

:ko

rofl

Scott,

Too bad that was you getting knocked down in round 1. :martial

You did get back up again...rofl

Oh, wait...I guess that would have been me, as you have more on your counter right now...Perhaps next year, we do it by getting the carp per hour Ratio (total hours spearing divided by number of carp).

All in fun.

I wonder if anyone has ever gone with (2) spearguns...one for each hand? Now that would be cool to get on camera when a school of carp come through...would need to both be good head shots though, or it would be one heck of a tangle! I bet it would be a first on YouTube.

Bring on the clearer water in the fall! Lots of carp in Green Lake, just need the vis. Sheboygan, here I come for this weekend...may try the by the breakwall & power plant.

Was out with Whopperhead & Tass today. We took a drive to the big lake to check'er out. Mother Nature was not on our side today. The winds were blowing HARD from the south. So hard that waves were riding over the lower break-walls. The currents in this area can be REALLY strong at times...Even with no wind.:mute

Being the Die-Hard that Whopperhead is, he was going to swim out to the rocks and take a peek over the other side! I'm sure he could have done it - But my guess is that it would have been futile. Trying to keep your snorkle above water isn't easy in 5 foot lake swells...I've done it before and spent more energy trying to hold posistion and breath up than it was worth - Helluva work out though :blackeye. Maybe if I dropped 6 pounds off of my weight belt?

So...we turned our backs on the big lake and drove inland to the closest lake I knew of with decent vis. We drove to Lower Genesee...The vis was down as compared to usual ( only about 6 feet) - But we atleast were able to get wet there. As far as fish went I only saw a few that would've been worth it...The one carp I saw would have probably died had Whopperhead or Tass seen it - I was using a polespear & by the time I loaded it up the carp was too far for me. Both Tass & Whopperhead had spearguns - Whopperheads new Beachat looked pretty awesome! Next time I hope to see it slaying some carps!

:hmm No fish this time...It would seem ALL of the lakes are stirred up right now & vis is way down. Too bad you guys(Whop & Tass) had to drive this far just to see Lower Genesse...I'm sure you guys were pumped about Lake Michigan...Next time maybe.

We can still TRY on the 22nd...I'm always willing to try...But I live ALOT closer to the big Lake than you guys...A sure bet would be just about ANYWHERE in the state in anothe 30 days. Lake Michigan as always is a hit or miss proposition. Let me know what you guys think!

The early forcast for Sat is sunny with wind wsw at 7mph. Of course it's monday and things will most likely change. 7mph is not bad, wsw will prolly drive some waves. But if that forcast hold true, is that divable?

Two solid days of west winds would be awesome. Thats usually all it takes to clear things up a bit. Again...Its hit or miss out there as far as vis goes. Today the problem would have been getting beat up by wind, waves & currents...Not to mention the "rock" barge was out there building up the breakwall...All the boulders they are using are WAAAAYYY bigger than any I've ever seen before. They're making some awesome habitat!

The current can be VERY heavy at times. Even on seemingly calm days. If you lost a fin even a very strong swimmer could be in for a ride. It can also be fun & the current can be used to your advantage at times too. Fish of all kinds seem to hold in these currents. Especially schooling fish.

Big waves suck...Or maybe I should say I suck big waves! Even a dry snorkle will do you no good when its six inches under a wave. Lake swells are not like ocean waves or swells and can make for hard breath-ups. That combined with bad vis kinda sucks.

I'd LOVE to get out just to check out (observe) the salmon :inlove that are in - let alone do a little polespearing for carpski's! If conditions pan out - I'M THERE!

EDIT: Once the winds reach 20 MPH in ANY direction its not much fun for freediving anymore...It IS fun...But more like a SURVIVAL type of fun! I've been out there plenty of times in less than ideal conditions - But I 'm kinda adventuresome. I would'nt want to take someone out there who was'nt experienced if it was a really windy day. Winds under 12 mph and under are doable. Things change quick. The big lake is nothing to play with when she's angry.

I am heading down to Lake Geneva this morning to do some spearing...It might be our "alternate" if Lake Michigan does'nt want us on the 22nd. :t

Hey guys my buddy and I were thinking of Boot Lake up around Lakewood, WI.

I have not dove her yet but she is shallow and clear from what I saw last year on my anniversary weekend.

A bit of a hike but we are camping out too. I am bringing my 3x6 float with dive flag and an underwater scooter to haul it around. Not sure if you guys are going to Lake Geneva but will watch the thread to make sure.

T-

Lake Geneva was awesome today...A bit choppy but STILL very good visability - up to 20 feet in spots and and even better at depth of 20 ft.

Because it was so windy there were hardly any boats today. I'm sure it being a Tuesday also helped. Me and my son ended up with about a dozen of the biggest rock bass we could find. We looked UNDER the big stone pier cribs all over the place. If you found some with big enough gaps underneath them you could peek down into them upside down and see the big rockies that you normally don't see too often. We pulled most of 'em from UNDER piers and were very selective. We also gave the pole to a couple of 11 inch perch.

Man...There are some GIANT walleyes in there a little deeper. Never saw a carp today...No bullheads either. Tons of hefty big & small mouth bass.

Tass & Whopperhead: We shoulda went to Lake Geneva yesterday!!!...I was'nt thinking that it was a MONDAY! :duhWe could of went off the old safety building!!!!

This will be a good alternate for lake Michigan on the 22nd. In fact if more than two and myself show-up we they would need a boat, canoe, or kayak for Lake Michigan. I only have a canoe...But I do have a kayak too! Almost forgot...Baby brain!!! So then one guy would just need to transport MY canoe or kayak and have a PFD for the vessle.

Lake Geneva would be good in my opinion - as long as we had enough DIVE FLAGS in the water to warn boats (Saturday). We really dont need to go deeper than 20 feet or so. But can if we wanted too. Access from the old safety building. Constance Blvd.

I dove Boot Lake once, about 20 years ago, and it was beautiful. I would make sure to double check the spearing regulations if your going to bring a gun in there- it was illegal from what I remember. Even if your not bringing a gun it's still a wonderful lake to dive and one deserving of a camera.

Jon

Hey Bgill
How is the lake during the weekends? I am starting to get a backup plan if Boot lake is off limits.

My buddy and I have a float, just a floating plywood frame with a flag on it to stash all the gear, some people have said in the past that it has to have a motor or be licensed have you guys heard anything like that?

Also is there a good campground nearby on L.G.

Pinggene is leaning towards Sheboygan. I assume that is on the big lake? How are the conditions looking for that area? It's about a 5 hour drive for me, not bad. Genneva is about 3.5. So if I leave at 5am I'm at Geneva safely by 9, Sheboygan would be 10:30ish. Which ever is the best overall I guess. A good balance of clarity, calm and fish to shoot!

Geneva still works, I'm just asking. I'm definately looking forward to getting out there though!

I just got off the phone with the DNR and Boot lake is OFF LIMITS!

They say that it is in the part of Oconto County west of hwy 141.

The lake is so clear and the fish are so big!

Looks like I am finding another lake to dive on this weekend! Thanks again Jon for the heads up it saved me a 12 hour round trip drive!

From the weather it looks like The Big Lake should be clearing up nicely! Alot of Westerly winds forecasted blowing over today & the next few days near that part of the lake shore (SSYC).

Conditions should be prime and the water clear if the winds STAY in our favor. Watch out big mama carpski's - cuz you gonna die! The salmon should be cruising pretty good too! :t

We need to "firm this up" in a few days who is actually gonna show up or not...Like I said I can handle three guys in my canoe if one can transport my kayak. I only have two PFD's...So bring one if possible. Not that we NEED them, but the law says so. But thats for the big lake...If we end up at Geneva everyone who reads this could show up...We enter form shore there.

If the "Big Lake" does'nt want us I'm leaning toward Lake Geneva in William's Bay...Boats are'nt a problem if you stay relatively shallow & have a good high dive flag. I beleive there is some kind of "no wake" rule within a certain distance from shore. There are lines of buoys in 20 plus feet of water all over.

I probably won't go to Sheboygan. Too far for me right now...lots of awesome clear lakes chocked full of fish all over my area of Wisconsin...Most are only a little green for about 2 months out of the year, I'm within 45 minutes of ALL of them - Just most are a little green yet...

I've heard some reports that Oconomowoc Lake is starting to clear-up and there is a good 15-20 ft. of vis there as well now!!!! Oh & Rock Lake is starting to clear up a little too. So says a little bird!

Now I have to actually get some work done!!!!! I'll come back & check this out at bed time...See ya!

I just thought I'd put it out there. I figure we will have a solid idea late Thursday early Friday. Whopperhead, do you have a preference?

I don't have a Preference- I will be coming regardless of where we end up- Granted I would like to do Lake Mich - as long as it's not too windy- The potential for LARGE carp is there And the possiblity for great clarity. weather now says SUNNY on SAT. so- yeah, I hope we have a few days of west winds and no wind and sun on saturday. PRIME TIME! I also have a canoe - but I think we could also just go in from shore. Or swim Bgill's canoe out- whatever - I'm sure we'll figure out how to get out there- Trust That

Well if you guys go to Lake Geneva can we come :inlove?

I would also be up for renting a pontoon boat for the day if they are available. That way we can sit back and enjoy our day of diving and have a large obsticle to swim off of, rather then a little flag.

Let me know is any of you know where we can get a boat like that if you know.
