does anyone know where i can get this?

hi again all!! :wave

i've been gone off travelling for the last several months and i haven't been as active on the board as in the past.

but now i'm back.

it's nice to see interest in the mermaid suit. i would typically use the suit for freediving. i'm not SCUBA certified yet, but sometimes i will go scuba diving with my dive/swim buddy to meager depths (less than 20ft). geeze i couldn't imagine depths of 110' (i'd probably drop dead of like fear or something)..

i would just use suit in the pool or when i go snorkeling. it's nice to see that whomever has made that suit posted on the forum. i'll have to contact them. i found a site that makes mermaid suits as well, they're made of a lycra/spandex sorta material and more for show.. not being in the water. but someone suggested they could perhaps manufacture one. Zentai Mermaid.

i'd also like something to keep me a little warm in the water since i get cold very easily in nearly any temperature of water.

the ultimatewetsuits link didn't work for me either. i did find the makers of that suit though.. http://www.otterbaysuits.com/ .. i'll definitely contact them. i see that they make it custom to your mono, which could be hard since i use a couple different ones.. but definitely could be overcome.

ps.. i also can't use BC when i have my monofin on. it throws me off.

Hallo, can you please check the URL (ultimatewetsuits.com) ? The URL doesn;t seem to exist. I am curious to see your design.

I strongly (!!!) recommend against using a BC with a mermaid wetsuit. This recommendation is based on accompanying three scuba mermaids during more than 100 open ocean dives, some of these down to 110', in currents and all kinds of conditions. It is not needed with the power of a monofin, interferes with the undulating swim style required in a mermaid suit and doesn't look very pretty...

Frank

hi frank..

what size tanks are the scuba mermaids you swim with wearing? maybe i'm just really tiny or something, but whenever i put on tanks they come WAY down too far on my body and i've tried several styles, sizes. i was thinking about using two pony bottles as my dive partner says i hardly use any air when i'm under. maybe that would allow for more mobility. do the mermaids you've dived with complain of difficulty undulating with a tank on?

thanks in advance

Usually they used full size (80 cuft) tanks and there were no problems. Two hints: The tanks, as always, should be so far up in the harness that the back of the head should hits the valve when looking upward.
Second, since no BC is used, it is advisable to make a little contraption using a broad neoprene strap, velcro and some bungee cord material which connects the lower part of the tank to the back of the weightbelt. This keeps the tank nicely aligned with body, slightly touching the butt. With such an arrangement, the tank is not at all in the way while undulating., but without it, the tank, particularly when empty, will be all over the place and annoying. It's easier to describe the purpose than how to make it, it's quite trivial to figure out.
Note that that contraption should use velcro so that the mermaid can rip it open in a second if the need arises - which would be if she wants to drop the weighbelt but keep the tank. Have fun and dive safely.

i just can't seem to get a tank to fit me :head

then again i'm only 5'0 tall. the valves hit my head even when i dont hold it back and fullsized ones go past the top of my butt.

i guess that's why i was hoping to try maybe two decent sized pony bottles. the tank dilemma is the primary reason why i don't much care for SCUBA. it's easier to freedive and buddy breathe off my partner when i need air. it's soooo hard to find a tank that isnt too big for me.

i wonder what sized tanks scuba kids use. maybe i would need that size, most 10 year olds are taller than me as it is. maybe i'll pose this question on the scuba side of the forum

aah.. the life of the little mermaid.. hehe

I've run a few 'hundred' third graders through discover scuba's over the years and an aluminum 50 always seemd to fit about best. You could also try a 63cuft tanks as well.

If your diving cold water, with a drysuit, I have know a few people who've hooked up double OMS steel 46's as instructor rigs- that way they could use just one set of regs and their backplate for both tec diving and teaching.

I am 5'10" and like to use an aluminum 50 if I am diving down in the islands- shallow, warm, water does require a whole lot of air. :inlove My wife is 5'2" and will use something similar. She can carry an 80 but since she only likes warm water diving there's never a reason for her to go bigger than a 63.:)

lol funny you say a few hundred THIRD graders.. thats about the time that most kids start getting taller than me. honestly.. i think it's due to hormones in the chicken or beef we eat here in the US because these kids are HUGE compared to me.. and i'll be 29 on friday...lol but that's another thread for another forum.

i tried an 80 cuft and it was like honestly almost as big as i was. personally i think my partner likes to see me saddled with a big tank. but then again i'm using his tanks... i think a 50 would fit me fine. if it fits a 3rd grader nicely.. it'll fit me..

thanks jon!

ps.. i made an edit.. i think i dive in cold water. at least it feels cold to me. i live in CA and i swear this water doesnt reflect our normal warm temps.. i always nearly FREEZE to death.

Mermaid Photos

you guys know me and my mermaid fetish, BUT.. this is SUCH a cool wetsuit.

somehow she has the feet modified to contain her mono.

is this custom? does someone where i could get a wetsuit like this? or even if its a wetsuit at all.. looks like shes swimming in warm water.. but i want this suit. and i don't want to email them JUST asking about the suit..lol and not taking their boat tour. my scuba partner really wants me to have this suit.

:girlie

Okay, this is really random, but I stumbled across this thread accidentally and if you haven't already found out on your own, I know the company that makes those wetsuits. It's untitled I came across their page while looking for new scuba innovations, ironically.

Hey Monofin Diva,

I had discovered the Otter Bay Mermaid Suit online too, and we were thinking of getting 'em.

Are you ordering one? It'd be great to hear how it goes, esp. with fit & comfort, and how you like swimming in it.

ThanQ in advance,
Steve
