Does being lighter = more efficient breathhold?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
What is important is body mass to O2 storage ratio.

i.e.

Total O2 storage [blood + lungs]
divided by
Body Mass

The higher the number, the greater the capacity for long apnea.

Lowering metabolic rate helps too, but people with a huge lung volume to body mass ratio tend to have good static apnea ability.

That is interesting. Martin is pretty muscular with very low body fat, and then you have Will who looks like he never picked up a weight in his life but also has very low body fat. Both are monster divers with completely different body physiques.
 
I have often questioned all this 'body mass' stuff. I think the phrase was coined by doctors discovering that any mention of the word fat turns off most of the population. Question then is, 'Does body fat use as much oxygen as muscle, over a short period?'. Probably not enough to make any difference. When I put ten more kilos on this skinny frame, it doesn't make any difference in my statics.
 
Slight change of topic but related: I remember reading somewhere (I think it was one of Federico Mana's books) that the body can also release and use oxygen by burning carbs or something like that? Does that make sense to anyone?
