Sorry mate, I assumed that was a rhetorical question.
I have always been under the impression that the classic colouring of fish was light underneath, silvery on the sides, with darker hues across the top, evolved to camouflage them against the backgrounds that are most likely to be behind them when viewed from these angles.
Perhaps a better camouflage model to adopt would be that of another land mammal who mooches around in the kelp, hunting for fish: the seal (though not a pink and yellow one, hopefully).

They're in Jersey, but they will post stuff over (I ordered some gear off them myself, today).
Very reliable, very knowledgeable and very helpful - but they have to add VAT on to gear sent over to the mainland.

That is quite a new thing too (adding VAT) I could never work out how they could get away with posting vat free before!
Strangely though if I order from them, I don't have to pay vat, but my goods have to go to the UK first then get posted on to me - I can see jersey from my upstairs window!!

Thanks Gaz D. Had some ok water on the weekend. The last clip was on Sunday. Loads of Mullet around but not too many Bass.

That's the mask mate.
However . . .
I've been told by my life coach, Chris Reynolds, that I have to 'get used to it'. He assures me that when I look, through these lenses, at patches of weed that would have previously appeared barren, hundreds of huge bass heads will now be revealed, looking back out at me. So I'm gonna stick with it for a while.
But I promise that you'll be the first to know if/when I decide to get rid of it.

Where are the fish?
I have recently moved to South Somerset (near Crewkerne) and been spearing a few times since moving here. I've only brought back a couple of pollack so far, but they have been the only fish I've seen (apart from lots of tiny tiny wrasse). I've been out a couple of times at Eype and a couple of times at West Bay as these are my local beaches. Are they not good places for fish? Like I said, I just haven't seen anything on the last few trips.
Can anybody suggest somewhere close by where I could go? Also, does tide make much difference? I have been mostly fishing at low or mid tide - perhaps high would be better?

The fish i have caught and seen have always been on an incoming tide - although this weekend i missed a mullet feeding on a ebbing tide - it was the only fish i saw that was in size. Dont give up mrlizard if you keep putting the time in the rewards usually follow.
Just looked at a few webcams the dorset sea looks like glass good luck if any one is going in today

Went in today at Jacob's Ladder in Sidmouth (where I grew up) for an hour. Searched over the reef in 2 - 3m very cloudy viz, and eventually managed to get myself a lovely wrasse. Very tasty as fishcakes. Still no mullet or bass though. Perhaps I'm not deep enough. Will keep persevering...

Hi all, I am heading down to Dorset with the wife and kids and have bought myself a speargun. I am staying in Osmington and have seen Ringstead mentioned a few times on here. I am an experienced diver/snorkeller but new to spearfishing. Can anyone advise if Ringstead is a suitable place to start or am I jumping in at the deep end? Cheers
Went down to durdle door/man o war bay today.
Visibility was ok but there didn't seem to be much about, even out deeper (i swam out about 50m out from the line of rocks in the mouth of man o war, as usual there was plenty of kayaks and kids so was only in for about an 45 minutes until it started getting busy.
Saw 2 shadows, the second i was pretty sure was a reasonable bass, took a long shot at it but didn't stand a chance.
Saw some interesting marine life on the way back anyway:
Ballan wrasse, lots of sand eel shoals (i was following these hoping something would be after them) and what i'm sure was a rare butterfish sat on the bottom.
I started feeling a bit woozy on coming out the water, then i found out why when my mates said "what the hell have you done?" looked down and there was blood running down my arm and leg, i have no idea how i did it, didn't feel it, must have been rocks, i must have lost a lot of blood from it in the water as within about 10 minutes of coming out i had about 1/4 pint out.
NOT FOR SQUEEMISH!

Lesson of the day: wear my diving gloves when spearfishing near rocks!

Camo suits...don't get me started. Cynical marketing ploy....don't get sucked in. Silver works as well as any colour IMO.

I would really like to meet up with somebody to go for a dive next week - maybe Monday or Tuesday. Don't really mind where, although I really fancy a trip to Portland as I have only dived there once and that was several years ago. I have only recently moved to this area and although I grew up near Sidmouth I have never dived with anybody else before and it would be great to meet some other keen spearos in the area.
No, you're not jumping in at the deep end. Ringstead is a good place to start: relatively safe currents, some good ground, and a good chance you will pick up some nice bass (if you go about it properly). I would jump in off the beach and head right (if you head left you will soon run out of hunting ground).
Osmington is suitable too, although not as user friendly as Ringstead.
Warning: these areas are easily blown out by any wind or swell coming from the southern half.

You are welcome to come along to the Wessex Club Dives (see Wessex Club thread), as is everybody else.
It's a bit windy at the moment, so not sure if the dive will be going ahead this coming Tuesday (we try to hold it in the best possible conditions, so that people don't end up driving miles to be confronted by lousy viz. This is usually based on a best guess, and we don't always get it right, so you need to be patient with us
