Went for a quick one at Newtons Cove sat afternoon, vis poor in places but fair out on the open sand. had a look around for some flatties in the sand, but no joy. Swam back to the murky soup around the reefs lots of wrasse, small pollack and a few tiny pout, one large mullet whizzed past me, but I had no chance and that was it.

Nice to get in with my new lovely and warm cressi suit. had 5 kilos on the belt and was still super buoyant, it was like trying to get down attached to a hot air balloon. Didn't want to overdo the weight as it was the first time in with that suit. Can anyone recommend the correct amount of weighting for a 2 piece cressi technia 5mm with hood for shallow work up to 10 meteres.

I wear 4kg in a vest n 5kg on a belt I'm negitive at around 6-7 m I take the vest off for if I know I'm going deeper than 10m

Lee I’ve used a couple of different Cressi suits and needed up to 12kgs for the shallow stuff. Best go up a couple of kilos at a time so as not to overdo it as everybody is different when it comes to the amount of lead on yer belt.

What I've done in the past, when unsure of how much weight I've needed, especially when there is a bit of a walk to the dive site, is take plenty of extra weight down to the water with me and dived near the shore to sort out bouyancy, and then hidden the surplus weights behind a prominent rock, underwater, ready to recover when I exit again, after the dive.

It's worked for me in the past (although, obviously, make sure the hiding place is easy to find again/isn't going to get exposed by the tide/covered in silt, etc).

Suprised at how much lead you need with these suits. I have dived for the past few years using a 3/2 summer surf suit with 3 kilos and a 5/4/3 winter surf suit during the autum with 5-6 kilos.

After buying a proper spearo suit I can't believe how blooming cold I used to get, I'm well toasty now; best investment this year!!!

I got these aswell, but they do feel a bit bulky, any advice on these and if they are good for spearo Long Apnea Fins for Spearfishing Freediving - Tigullio Grinta

Lee, those fins are the same sort of length as most of us use; blade stiffness ebing a personal kind of thing, but perhaps more stiff for deeper dives and flexi for surface stalking.

I think Scottie gave some good advice ref weight & depth. Also bear in mind that if the first stroke of the duck dive is good and efficient, then its a lot easier the rest of the way down.

It seems there is vis down Devon at the moment, does anyone know if there is any in Dorset? With all these strong winds I am doubtful but hopeful of a few dives this weekend. Willing to travel as the missus is away all weekend.

I use this link to check Swanage bay, for a steer but it's been nothing but cloudy for about a week now:

Went down to Beer the day before yesterday to find cloudy brown water. Thankfully I had my paraglider in the boot of the car so had a lovely fly to Sidmouth instead.
Now off to Charmouth for a surf, so with increasing SW winds and increasing swell there definitely won't be any viz down there.
Good luck in finding somewhere to dive - I'd be interested to know where you can find some reasonable viz in these conditions.

I can’t get down this weekend anyway John, but next Sunday come driving rain, hurricane force wind, fire and brimstone; I’ll be swimming around somewhere looking for a flatfish.
