Just got back from Portland Harbour next to Newtons Cove, The cove was unfishable but inside the harbour was about 2 meters vis and just about doable.

Lots of wrasse everywhere some to 5lb. saw one bass in the shallows of around the 6lb mark but shot passed me at 100mph. Did manage 2 mullet both around 3lb; they where the only 2 I saw.

Having a prob with the shaft line tangling around the rubber shock absorber/bungee, when firing at distance the line knots up around the bungee that is attached to the speargun then the line thus missing good fish at distance. my weapon is a cressi pneumatic SL 70 STAR.

Can anyone help resolve this prob?

Lee i had this problem on my beauchat 75 when i first had it; i played with the tension of the spear-line bungy/shock absorber (made it tighter) and that seemed to sort it out. i've changed the line a few times since and it hasnt recurred.
Also maybe just check that theres no significant twisting in the line.

Is it worth targeting the winter stuff now around Dorset such as cod and whiting? does anyone manage this? say around portland or chesil.

I usually go on my own so tend not to dive more than 6 metres; will this be an issue for targeting the said species. Bearing in mind that I can only hold my breathe for a max of 1 min 30 secs at the mo.

With the exception of pollack and flatties all my fish have been taken from the surface or around 4 metres.

Well down to the coast we went, met up with the 2 John's and jumped in.
Was having a lovely time until 4 million boats came out across the sea at a rate of knotts faster than we could swim.
Back in we went after only an hour and a half, still it was great to get back in after so long out of the water.
Shame there wasn't much out there to eat ah boys.
Tis the season for the night dive boys

Just got back in the country, but not sure if I can make Thursday as might be off to Plymouth later in the week.

Did manage to get in Sunday, with a couple of other lads from DB. Viz was pretty good in places and I really enjoyed the dive. Not much seen (a few mullet), but I was nice and toastie in my 7mm - although I felt a bit sorry for the other two, in their 5mms, as I watched them shivering so much that they could hardly spoon the pasta I had made into their mouths!

Keen to get back in asap, before the last of the bass sod off.

The weather doesn't look too clever for the coming week.

Winter is on the way now chap’s, we nipped in to O Three after the dive to pick up a few bits and the guy in there said that he’d had a spearo come in with a large black can, after telling the bloke that he was sorry but they don’t sell fuel the spearo explained that it wasn’t for fuel but wondered if he could fill it up with hot water so he could flush his suit through before he got into it.
Made the guy from O Three smile, anybody from on here?

Cod do often come in very close off Chesil, but usually after a big storm and when the sea is brown (ie. no vis) so impossible to dive. Plus you should always dive from there with a buddy, just in case of any problems..

It would be very interesting to dive it when the vis is OK - but contidions like that don't happen very often during the winter months...

So stick where your comfortable and wait for spring, it's getting closer by the day

Hi Lee,

I used to have that problem but I put a large 4/0 fishing swivel plus interlock snap on the end of the bungee and never had the same problem.

Just my 2p worth.

It looked fairly calm on the webcams today but after the crap weather of earlier in the week I would say it’s going to be a bit on the soupy side.
Don’t know for sure mind, tis just a guess.

Yeah, me - and it was for AFTER the dive, before I got out of my suit (great idea I got from Paul Smith - although I often drive home and get out of the suit in the shower, in the winter).

Sounds bad Lee, Ive always considered cressi gear to be well built do you use a bungee on the end of your mono/dyneema?

I have the SL90 and its a cannon, I use a bungee and a double wrap of dyneema and never had any problems apart from it been a bitch to load.

Could always go for a band gun

As long as my arm it was, sounds like a tall tell, but he was a beauty. Still dreaming about him I tell thee.

The mullet were nice, but I need some more know.
