Firstly, Happy new year everbody....now for an introduction.

Im new to the forums and to world of spearguns. Finally got myself a speargun for xmas, courtesy of Father Christmas. It is a Tigullio and just over 70cm long. Im looking forward to learning about it all before i venture out when the water warms up a bit, so apologies for any daft questions.

All the best ,

Dan:friday

Sunfish: almost right, it be Darzet!

& welcome to DB Dan :) (have a good search for tips, because there's a lot of useful information tucked away on this forum)

First report of the year: my optimistic D3 says in 10c in the water and the vis is fine, came home with a good few edible goodies, but didn't see any fish..!

Thank you flyflicker. Ive been reading plenty on here! Im itching to get in the water and get to work, however i think a wetsuit is on the shopping list before i go in the water haha

Sorry Dan, but that's quite funny - you bought a speargun before getting a wetsuit lol :) actually that's exactly what i did too :)
i think you've got a bit of time now, so work on your breathhold and maybe have a go at some 02 and C02 tables...

Happy new Year to you Doorset folks!

haha its pretty daft, although i wasnt expecting to get one. If it was left to me it would probably be another summer go by where i meant to get one but never did

Happy New Year! Best wishes for 2011.

Here is a short movie with some footage of me out on the dive hunter in Purbeck. Found it on my hard drive and spent News Years Day editing it on Sony Vegas Edit suite. Good program looks like it will take a while to get used to, will hopefully get plenty of footage/practice in 2011:t:)

Happy hunting stay safe.

Nice Chris - a couple of 5 pounders would be awesome but not bass!...

1st March is the record at the moment and I have no doubt that Shiny Nick will sort that out this year.

Even if by some miracle I found time to get in early season I have decided not to spear any bass until May. I have found that a lot of the early fish we get are full of roe. The fact they are back in the shallows probably means they won't spawn and the eggs are going to be reabsorbed (?) but if there is a chance that fish could still spawn before the summer I personally don't want to spear it - especially as I bang on to people about how sustainable spearing can be! If there are any marine boffins on here who know a bit more I'd be interested to hear their thoughts.

Good luck to you all, hopefully I'll get out a few times this season and see you in the water!

Very noble Mr. Garner, and do you know what.................I'm going to join you!

The chances of me getting a bass before May are slim anyway.

No bass 'til May.

Anyone know any good cod spots?

Well the Irish closed season for Bass is from May15th to June 15th so..... scientifically speaking you should hold off till June... as by your plans above you'll be hitting the bass hard at a time they are most vulnerable ;)

I'm not sure I buy the dates the Irish government set... but there must be some science behind it... it brought our stocks back from almost extinct!

How about Mr Mullet?
Can we work it into them come early spring, or do they share the same spawning times as the Bass??
Anybody know as it’s usually the Mullet that come my way first?
