Had a very pleasant dive last Saturday with Clive and after an hours dive didn't feel cold at all - vis was fine - the water temp was 9c - no fishes seen - sun was warming - shop was selling hot pies at 1/2 price - Liverpool won - a last seasons bass for supper - fantastic bottle of wine - was a good day :)

Last Saturday I spent from 9.00am till 4.00pm at work, went home to a house full of my son’s 10 year old mates that were all causing more havoc than the riots in Egypt, had a rubbish take away at around 8.00pm and fell asleep on the sofa at 9.00.
All in all it was a crap day!
Wish I lived closer to the sea!

Wish this damn SW wind would disappear! :head

I was hoping for a dive this week, but it seems blown out. Anyone know what the vis is like in Portland Harbour?

Cheers

Ryan

Can't help with any vis report Ryan - too long away from the water for me...

Saw this vid earlier - super camera angle (oh, and he nails three doubles)

Funny, I've never associated bass with wreckfish... only ever in such shallow water!

Great vid!

Nice video :)
Interesting to see the lack of recoil from the air gun. also interesting to see the use of the trident speartip - seems quite popular with the french spearos?

Good video.
I used a trident for the first time last year.
Combined with a small pneumatic it's great for hole fishing.
The late-great O.M.D was a bit down on hole fishing, 'shooting fish in a barrel' was one comment.
Maybe in some places, but here in Sussex bass hole-up in tunnels with at least two exits.
The skill lies in getting close enough before the fish decide your are a threat and scarper.
It's real cowboys and Indians stuff, very exciting and it completely reinvigorated my love of spearfishing.
Sneaking around in the kelp and string-weed, carefully peering under rocks and overhangs.
You have to be on high alert all the time, ready to fire in a split second because as soon as a fish is spotted, it's off.
To keep the mind focused I hum the theme to the James Bond films, it adds to the sneaking around feeling.
A trident just seemed a better choice for this fishing, if a fish is hit anywhere near the head with trident fired from a pneumatic at close range, it's stoned, pretty much clubbed to death I guess.

Roll on the summer.

He has a few good vids but this is the first time I have seen that camera angle. Maybe some sort of waist mount? Standard issue for the GoPro?

Ben looks Like the chest mount to me, good vids.

Good evening all.

Just eaten the last two bass fillets from my freezer, looks like a long wait till my next one as I just can't bring myself to pay for it over the counter!!

Question: How do you store yours?

My problem is the last couple of times I have taken fillets out of the deep freeze they are turning white and slightly dry around the edges. I have been using cling film and plenty of it making sure to seal it properly but I'm wondering if there are any better options or is there a deep freeze shelf life:).

BTW they still tasted great once I had cut away the dry edges!

kev, i think if you use a vacuum sealer they will last much longer. Foxfish will know...

Yep as Jonny says - vacuum bag sealing machine, cost from £35 but you know the saying, the more you pay.....

Kev,

I tend to freeze whole, gutted and de-scaled and then fillet when its de-frosted. Seems to work for me never had the dried out effect you described earlier.

Cheers

Ok boys this vacuum bag seems favourable for me as my 1st fridge/freezer isn't all that big, unlike Ryans' american style walk in freezer;)

Can you cook fish in the bag once removed from freezer?

Not long know for you john..... us mere mortals of the spearfishing world might have to wait a little while longer to glimpse some silver:t

Good question & I would guesse - yes you could but, I like a bit of colour on my fish & I think the bag would make a mess in the frying pan.

Interesting...... so if I was to season the fish with salt, pepper and put maybe a dash of oil in cook, no smell and no mess.

Frying in the bag......she'd defo moan about that one!!
