Bass row is a very desirable smoking ingredient!

The Bass around here spawn in Dec - Jan.
I have also found bass with row in durring the spring months, so I haven't really got a clue how it all works?

Think I read somewhere that they can carry roe for the whole year, males and females!
Must check.

If you really wanted to do the fish a favour you wouldn't spear them - ever!

Apart from that, Happy New Year everyone. :)

How about Mr Mullet?
Can we work it into them come early spring, or do they share the same spawning times as the Bass??
Anybody know as it’s usually the Mullet that come my way first?

I saw a chef on TV, a couple of months ago, grating raw, dried mullet roe over one of his fish dishes (I think he runs a posh Italian eaterie in London somewhere).

EDIT: It was on Saturday Kitchen; here's the link, if anybody is interested: BBC - Food - Recipes : Cavatelli with broccoli and colatura (anchovy sauce)

Would that of been "grey mullet" or "silver mullet" as it is becoming more popular to call it on tele!

Yep, dried Grey Mullet roe. If you do a google search you'll find that it goes by a number of different names, in a number of different cuisines, around the world. Looks as though they call it 'bottarga' in Italy.

Listening to a description of it, I'd say that it would probably make my top 10 list of things I'd really prefer to avoid eating (it would come in ahead of slugs and worms, which sound a lot more appetizing to me).

Mate I’ll eat most things but roe of any type turns my guts! Bit like Lime Jelly or fully skimmed milk, good for nothing.roflrofl

There are the milt & the eggs, I will eat both from mackerel but, I like it hard fried in both cases.
Cod Milt & bass milt smoke beautifully too.
Winter soul often carry row & I will cook it for friends but, not keen myself.

Viz report, for anyone thinking of getting in this weekend:

I've been along the Purbecks today (and yesterday, and the day before), and from Poole up to Lulworth Cove the viz isn't looking as good as I'd hoped it would. Despite the northerlies we've had for most of this week I'd say that there isn't much more than a couple of meters in the spots that I looked at, as viewed from the shore/cliffs, at low tide. I did take my gear but, at this time of the year, with these temperatures, and the general lack of fish, I'd be wanting better viz before I get in.

It is do-able, in places, if you really want to get in, but for me, on this occasion, it needed to be better. Hopefully, if these northerlies keep up, the viz will improve next week as we move into neaps.

I didn't get as far as Portland, so I can't speak for that area (although it would be nice to receive a viz report about it from someone this weekend, as I might nip down there early next week).

Hope this has been helpful to someone.

All the best,

Gaz

Anyone get in over the weekend?

Viz report?

Gaz,

Going to have to save it until next week myself now mate, doesn't seem like anyone has been in/or have they?

Cheers

Ryan

Haven’t been in since the Christmas break, shite weather, wind, bad vis and now work!
Still I guess you’ve got to earn it before you can spend it.
Hope to make it down within the next couple of weekends, been a quite winter so far, hardly seen a flatfish let alone shot one. :head

I am thinking about a flatty dive or a dive for some shells at some point next week...

It's going to be bloody cold gettinng out though! :head

Not as cold as it's gonna be getting in!

The viz is definately improving.

I've injured my ankle, so I might be out of the water now until the spring - balls!
