Dorset Spear Fishing 2011

I think i would be hard pressed to catch a sofa let alone an armchair with being out of the water for so long! I sit and watch tuna, sharks, sun fish, squid, flying fish and piles of other odd stuff swim by and the closest i can get to spearing them is running them over with the ship!

Saying that the new RA 100 with extra bells and whistles is great and the fish medly (Scallops, oysters, spider crab, clams and plaice) i knocked up the other night rocked.

Anyone out tonight?

Wish I could mate, but I’ve got to pack me fins for 10 days of hell in the Caribbean, warm clear water, bugger all tide and weird fish to look at. Palm tree on the beach to site under while being served up cold Carib beer, tis a hard life!!!

Thats great, looks like you were fairly close, i have seen dolphins from a distance coming into weymouth bay last year quite a few times - would love to see them close, thanks for sharing

Once we had messed about trying to get the camera sorted they had moved away a bit, still within 30ft, but they came right up under the boat to start with, so close I could feel (and smell!!) the air being blown from their blow hole! I reckon there must have been 20 or so of them, but impossible to count. I didn't have my dive kit with me! doh! Never in 42 years have I seen so many in one pod in UK waters! amazing sight and priviledged to have seen it, my two younger kids, or my wife and I, will never forget having seen that!

Well, Scott (Highlander) and I got in the water at Newtons Cove for a couple of hours yesterday evening and didn't see an awful lot. Viz varied around 2-3 or 4 meters. Very few fish about though. I took one 2lb pollack and accidentally took a small wrasse. I've never accidentally shot a fish before! This wrasse got in the way of my spear when I shot the only other decent fish I saw - a large mullet in a shoal of three. I actually hit the mullet with a potshot taken from the surface but I didn't get to it quickly enough and it tore off my spear (another first for me). However, when I pulled the spear back towards me I saw it had a small wrasse on it! I felt rather guilty about the whole experience, so I kept the wrasse to make a little fish soup or curry.
Anyway, not a particularly fruitful dive but the pollack will be tasty on the bbq tonight and it was good to meet Scott.
Weather looks good for the end of this week so hopefully will get back in the water Thursday or Friday...

Checking further up the thread, looks like the reson for non fish seen the past 2 weeks here is because of the Dolphins........... Bahh, the cute fish hoovering devils........

Went in this evening down at my local spot and had a nice couple of hours in viz ranging from 3 - 5 ish metres. Hundreds of little pollack, a couple of smallish bass seen, and two large shoals of medium-large mullet. And there lies the frustrating part of the evening - I shot one of the larger mullet (around 3lb) in the second shoal I saw. It was a reasonable shot, not far behind the gills in the middle of the body. Knowing that mullet are soft-bodied little buggers I pulled it in quick to get a hold of it. It was going absolutely crazy, never seen one so lively on the spear. I managed to get it in my hands but it slipped out and tore off the spear and it was away. Crabfood. Very annoying. Never had a fish come off the spear before, and now I've had two decent mullet do that in one week. Must get my hands in those gills quicker next time. Grr. :head

NOW THE FELLING. i shot a mullet tonight and it mannaged 2 rip off just b4 i got my mits on it. 2nd shoal come along i picked out the biggest waited and got him right in the gill plate. little ova 3lb. happy with that. took mine and my mates boat out for its first outing. very happy. only got it yesterday.

Without wanting to antagonise anyone, and with the way UK spearfishing is growing and receiving more online focus, I am starting to think that perhaps it might be an idea if reports of fish ripping off and being lost are best not mentioned?
Sure I'm possibly guilty along the line somewhere, chuck in the fact that you shot something but leave the losses off

I agree, it happens, especially with mullet, but it's not good for the image of spearfishing.
To read of a fish 'tearing off a spear' does sound pretty gruesome, maybe a little toning down without lying about it?

Very delicately put! And yes, I think I agree, so I'll think of more subtle ways of reporting in future. Still gutted about the one that got away though :head
Still, back in the water this afternoon, so hopefully might be able to make up for it. Speaking of which, I always try to hunt on a high tide as that is what I've always believed is when the fish come in closer. However today I'll be going in on a low tide because that's the only time I can get down to the sea, so it'll be interesting to see if it makes any difference...

Hi Folks,

Just a quick question. I''m thinking of going spearfishing to Osmington or Ringstead later today (around 6ish). In these strong NE' easterlies (which I think is pretty much offshore), can I expect half decent conditions with vis? Maybe bowleaze cove would be a better idea?
