Hello Will, how be on then?
I thought Barracuda but at the time the only real thought I had was how fast I could swim!!!
Should be down there on that weekend, weather permitting.
Ben phoned me but my mobile is on the blink I’ve whipped him off a text but haven’t heard anything back yet, if you speak to him pass on my best.

My vote is for Barracuda too - I have swam with them & they are fearless as Paul described. I seem to remember seeing a picture of Toni holding one?

I have seen those buggers in the distance, when in the caribbean or somewhere hot, always wary of them & vice verca I suppose.
Just don't wear anything shiny & keep your fingers in your pants. I am not sure how that works with swimming though.........

I'm good thanks, finished my course and starting work in august, watch out! I'll pass on your regards to ben when I see him next week, with a bit of luck there should be bass involved... It would be good to catch up that weekend, I'll see if I can get a pass...

Yep pretty sure that is not a barracuda but, as will points out, a needle fish, giant gar, long tom or sometimes called different names depending on location.

Thanks for the opinions chaps, I know the picture isn’t that clear but it seems like we are going with the Barracuda.
Glad we don't get the little buggers around this neck of the woodsblackeye

Brett the only thing I could smell at the time mate was a slight whiff of something that you wouldn’t usually smell in the clear waters of the Caribbean....:crutchroflrofl

I'd defo go with barracuda. Had one follow me round west coast of Barbados - from 400m offshore in 10m, all the way in to 10m offshore in 1m. I went left - it went left - right - right. Quite scary. They're attracted by shiny stuff. Lots of teeth

Just got back mate, large double peach and lemon curd.....lush

Went in this evening down at my local spot and had a nice couple of hours in viz ranging from 3 - 5 ish metres. Hundreds of little pollack, a couple of smallish bass seen, and two large shoals of medium-large mullet. And there lies the frustrating part of the evening - I shot one of the larger mullet (around 3lb) in the second shoal I saw. It was a reasonable shot, not far behind the gills in the middle of the body. Knowing that mullet are soft-bodied little buggers I pulled it in quick to get a hold of it. It was going absolutely crazy, never seen one so lively on the spear. I managed to get it in my hands but it slipped out and tore off the spear and it was away. Crabfood. Very annoying. Never had a fish come off the spear before, and now I've had two decent mullet do that in one week. Must get my hands in those gills quicker next time. Grr. :head

Are you trying to pull the fish in towards you, on the line?

I used to loose quite a few fish like that, until it was pointed out to me that it is much better to let go of the gun as soon as you spear the fish, and then swim to it.

The fish tend to roll over/go to ground, when you release pressure from the line, but fight like demons when they feel that pressure pulling against them - well, that's my experience anyway.

I rarely loose a fish that is properly speared these days.

Great to see all the catches going on in Dorset at the moment. I'm stuck abroad, again, but can't wait to hit the water just as soon as I get back, in about three weeks.
