Dorset Spear Fishing 2011

Didn't realise that the sole was such a good fish, thus didn't weigh it! and being my first sole I could have guessed it's weight way off.

All I can say is that I catch tons of mullet; usually around the 3lb mark, so my guestamation skills a pretty good now with the mullet. the 2 in the pic were a lot bigger and fatter than my usual and I rekon I would be pretty close to say they where around the 4lb mark.

As for the sole, well I'm kicking myself now, I guess I'll never know how big it actually was. All I can say is that it felt heavier than the mullet and was a lot longer. It looks a funny shape in the pic as it is slightly bent/twisted on taking the pic. So I can't really claim it to be 5lb, I will happily be corrected on the guess of it's weight.

Just measured the width of my float in the pic, it is 20cm wide, so maybe the length of the sole can be visualised and a better guess to weight? my guess from looking at the pic would be 50-60cm?

OK now I'm really gutted!!! just looked at the photo of the fantastic sole in the lead 4lb 11oz and mine did look 'around' that size, but I have no other pics or proof, neither did I weigh it, only have my brother who witnessed the catch. Like I said I really didn't realise it was such a good fish, so just took a quick snap of the fish on the floor. Well I guess I'll just have to accept that I will never really know..arrrrrgh!

A quick post to say that there is still vis on the east side of the island 4-5m average. A few fish seen, small tides and very little movement while we were there I don't think helped but left with fish for the bbq.

Never had a lobster! well done mate dead jealous; the're going to taste great.

Tell you what I'll take someone to my sole spot if they take to to a lobster spot

i will get a few more under my belt as only ever grabbed 5. got 4 in 1 week. happy with that! 2 on prep for the comp and 2 on the day.

Hi, never really posted on this forum before, however i do always have a look. Just thought id share a few photos of a mullet i caught on a boat dive around portland last weekend and biggest to date. It weighed in at 4lb 3oz and was shot with my comanche 75. (apologies for the enthusiastic/cheesy smile)

is the barrier at the shed you have to pay at to get down there or actually just blocking access to the grass car park? Could you still park up by the toilet block near the slip way?

The Barrier is at the shed where you pay. You end up walking through the fields adds about 20 minutes.

Got up very early this morning as I had pass out from the wife for a morning dive. Decided on a brand new mark that I've wanted to try for a while - albeit not being too hopeful on the vis. Happily when I arrived the sea was flat calm and the vis was up to 3m in places. It was a stunning reef and just the sort of ground where I hunt for bass regularly and more often than not taking a few home for the freezer as well as one for dinner! For some reason tho I saw very little this morning, only 2 silver fish, one too small and the other moved in slow motion like Neo from the matrix as the spear shot past his head and down his flank not touching him at all!

Anyway, fishable vis, stunning new reef dive and a morning out in the water. Not a bad start to the bank holiday! Must try the spot again on different tides!

Hello. Today morning I was spearfishing in Swanage. Vis was different.. 2-8 mt... depends where I was fishing... I cought extremely huge sole (for me). It had 57 cm. Unfortunatly I couldn't check the weight but I think it was about 2,5 kg.

Sole often move into Durlstone Bay, to the south of Swanage, at this time of year.

(I don't think I'm treading on anyone's toes by mentioning this: it's a well known spot, where the Wessex Club often meet up, and it's big enough, and holds enough fish, to host a number of spearos).
