Dorset Spear Fishing 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
xtar D06 it is for me then. I have been using a torch similar to those £11.00 ones on ebay and its done me proud for 2 seasons but im thinking its time for something a bit better as im always worried it will leak and ruin my eves fishing.
I did look at the xtar origanally but was put off by the very short burn time, so thankyou Highlander for that post.

I have used my Xtar D06 for night dives in excess of 5 hours with Senybor 2200ah batteries with no problems.
I now use the Yezl Q2 with the D06 as a backup. Excellent.

Glad my post is helpful, but may be worth carrying out a bucket test for your own piece of mind, so you know for definite & you have confidence in your own batteries as there seems to be a difference albeit the same battery.

Why do you favour the Yezl over the D06?

No reason in particular other than perhaps the beam is wider so gives more chance of picking up a fish on the periphery. Other than that it is simply because the battery that I have in the Yezl lasts a little longer than the one in my D06.

Anyone planning to head out off Weymouth this evening?

I'm heading back to Weymouth later to see the folks and was hoping to find some vis to get in around 22:00, far from an ideal time in winter (late) but I want to fish the incoming time and not the low water as it's a 0200 H/W. I appreciate it was a crazy blow yesterday but i have hopes for the south side of Portland Harbour or Newtons cove offering a few meters. Fingers crossed it is ok then and not a brown mess.

If anyone goes past these areas/bays that could give me an indication of the vis i'd appreciate it. If not i'll let you know tomorrow if it was a waste of time or ok.

If anyone was heading out and wants to meet up i'd be keen to save heading out on my own.

Cheers Chris

Think u will be lucky to find vis with all the rivers.in full flood and with the winds. I wud defo be jumping in if there was vis...but bored with the harbour as i know id prob just come home wih a couple of mullet a bass and a flounder collection..

There is a spot that i can almost garantee a bag of bigger bass from....but need to give it a few days till the winds swings...how long are u here for chris?

Me and a mate were thinking of heading down to Weymouth at the end of next week, its looking like the winds going to swing round to a northerley on monday for the next 5 - 6 days. Will the harbour be churned up much from the winds?

I'm just back for the weekend but bar next weekend i'll look to come back each time the weather is good for it, also go an extra week of at Xmas from the 14th so you'll be hearing from me again.

Will let you know just how bad it looks later (obviously be checkin in the dark though). You'll know it's pretty bad if i don't even bother getting the suit wet, fingers crossed for a little magic.

So i didn't even bother getting in. Newtons cove was shocking and Portland castle only had about 1.5m in the shallows and i rarely see fish there so really didn't feel it worth it. The harbour was dead calm though so we'll just have to see how fast it settles or what stirs it up again.

Ghrrrr... Mud instead of water everywhere from boscombe to swanage... Any vis reports from LC to portland??? Is it worth to have a dip???

I live by the sea at Southbourne and walk my dog along the beach 2-3 times a day (dawn/early afternoon/evening). Although I have not dived there yet, looking down at the water from one of the rock groynes this afternoon, the vis looked ok. The sea has been quite settled since the blowout several days ago.

Unfortunately the netters are out here. I saw one very close inshore over a sole mark I used to fish from the shore. I'm disappointed as I have my eye on this mark and not only will I have to be extra careful of nets, but there will be fewer fish to catch.

When I can, I want to fish marks very local to me instead of heading west to the Purbeck and Portland areas each time I go out.

I am interested in buying the D06 flashlight. After checking ebay the best price I can see including batteries & charger is about £46 (sent from China). This seems much cheaper than others which also offer the full kit (not just the torch).

The ebay seller is: XTAR D06 CREE XP-G R5 LED 350Lumens Diving Flashlight Dive Set | eBay

Can anyone see any reason not to order from this seller? I can wait a while for the torch to be delivered. I want to build up experience before heading out at night.

The rivera are still pouring mud into the sea... I went on the b'muth pier even to check the visibility further from the shore and there was no change... I cycled from boscomb to sandbanks and then to poole quay and the best i found was in poole quay (about 1,5m)... But the winds are changing again...

Hi Jaca, as it happens we have amazingly calm weather in Guernsey & an even better forecast tomorrow with 4mph winds, the sea is like a mill pond!
Only 13.9c in the water though,

The problem with ordering from china is when things go wrong it can be a pain in the neck. Sure i've bought stuff some good and other bits bad. Personally i find with items such as electronics i'm better off buying from sellers that are easier to contact.

Have you already seen this www.TorchyTheBatteryBoy.com

He sells on ebay and is very knowledgeable. Plenty of other sellers to pick from of course. (I found the other day he is just moving house so has removed most items from ebay for a couple of weeks).

I've had a torch from china which is still going strong, got another for a mate; it leaked, they sent another free of charge; it leaked. Couldn't be bothered chasing it up again as it was only £6. Could have costly if it needed posting back each time or i couldn't afford to write it off.

Good luck

Thanks for your input. There appears to be only one UK seller of this torch on ebay at the moment and am unsure if they do the full kit with charger etc.. - have sent an email to the seller.

In addition to a previous comment I would avoid such stuff from China at that price point. I have bought from China with a Q5 LED light & works fine & only cost me about £7 or £8 all in & I gave it a punt & works as a secondary torch.

Anyway one of the reasons it is cheaper is because it is an inferior LED, you mentioned it was an R5 LED, that seems to be about a few years old & at 350 Lumens, I have an Xtar D06 with reportedly 820 lumens using a U2 LED, so I really wouldn't purchase this one. Others have T6 LED's which are supposed to be 800 lumens.

Check out the Torchythebatteryboy link previously & if he hasn't got them just search for Xtar D06 T6 or U2 & only look at UK sellers. In addition you may get charged import tax & customs on the item, I say may as I am not sure at what price that normally starts, maybe £50. So always bear in mind buying overseas out of Europe that you will get stung for duty & customs import charge, possibly adding another £30+.
