Can anyone help on the ID of this ray? I'm thinking it's a blonde; mostly due to the size.

For help with ID of most sea creatures try" Dan Bolt underwaterpics " Fantastic catch by the way , are you deliberately targeting species the same shape as the trophy's ?!!! It must be a very strong contender anyway !!

Wow, nice one guys and good to meet you. I was so close to borrowing your spare torch and getting back in Lee, oh how I now wish I had. Those rays just will not die, must have been er interesting! Come on Nobby what on earth did you ping?
Just on a technical point how come I can no longer view any pictures on the thread?

Yeah nobby! Come on mate post up your catch mate!! If you can't wait, then check it out on my Facebook Page - glee ranes ;) you'll have to add as friend to view, let me know your DB user name so I know who you are.

hi guys sorry took so long to post , family dutys.
after me and lee messing with my RA 70 as origanal set up was way to much overkill and me not liking my gun due to fish being missed:vangry. we put it back to single strung with 18mm bands instead of 20mm bands and double strung.
now feeling confident about the gun set up we set off. we bump in to steve , verry nice to meet u mate.
we get in and very quickly into the dive lee shoots his beast of a ray! :friday.happy as hell for him we set off once more . lee then hits a bass of 2 lb then a 4lber. at this point i have seen no fish:waterwork we carry on with the light comming up then we hit another spot we search for a while with not much joy. i see a few mully shooting round at high speed. viz not being the best and me getting really frustrated that i have not seen any fish apartfrom 1 fast moving mully we call it a day and start the swim back in lee and i have a little convo about hit list for this year and i start talking about gilthead bream and how they r the highest on my list as still yet to shoot 1.with that i see below me a flash of silver i dive down and slowly sneak down to find 5 gilt head bream:p. slowly and carefully i make my way over pick a target and BOOM!!! gilt on:friday. the whole time i was thinking in my head how i got the wrong gun for this and no longer long range gun, i really had to block this out and concentrate on the shot and glad to say i am happy for using this gun and restoring my faith in the gun.

all in all it was a great dive for us both . verry trying in different ways but now am the happiest spearo at the mo with my first gilt.

my catch, bang on 4lb gilthead bream

Nice one mate:p

You mentioned DONKEYS?

Went out this morning with Nobby. Met Steve as he was getting out; nice to meet you mate.

Anyhow it ended up being a fruitful dive. We both wanted something very different for the start of June, so ignored the run of the mill bass and mullet,,however I did shoot 2 bass 1x 4lb and 1x just under 2lb:

Then swiftly moved out into deep water. I took my first dive down to 9 meters and spotted a monster sat in the sand, on closer inspection it was a huge blonde ray, so took aim and nailed it with my home made mini 50cm banded gun. Then went for a long 'water skiing' session,,,,,OMG! that thing was powerful!! after a good long fight I get it under control and on my stringer. Bang on 14 lb of Blonde ray!

However,,,,Nobby had the FISH of the day!!!!!! you wait till you see what's on 'HIS' stringer!!

Well done on the fish mate. At first I thaught that was a thorny, but looking closer it has strange black dots on the wings the same as a blonde. Goo shooting mate, I would rep but gotta spread the love a bit more

Great spearing. Very jealous now lol. Looks like you won the comp we had for first one to get a gilthead, couple of beers on me then. Have some rep

Crikey cracking fish both of you.. got a sneaky suspicion I know where that gilt head was too.. if so fair play!
I am sure somewhere yesterday I saw someone asking about a spare blade for a broken set of omer millenium ice fins, anyone else see it and know who it was, I have one in th shed that I was going to donate but cant find where I saw it now!
Fed up with gardening, need a water fix!

It was Cesar that had the broken Ice fin.

Cheers PM'ing him now.

Anyone got a vis report for anywhere within an hour or 2 of Portland, got a friend down for the day who is desperate to get wet.. just researching viz reports while the hangover clears!

Been in a few times over the last few days. Viz has been pretty good if a little milky. Yesterday I had one of those moments. I dived down and caught site of a decent sized spider crab. Had the gun in my hand so grabbed it with my free hand. As I pulled it up, I realised it was clinging to another decent sized spider! Awesome I though! Biggest crabs I've had and TWO if them in one dive! So put the gun under my arm (mistake - should have dropped it - it's attached to my buoy) and went back up to surface. At the surface I had to pull my buoy to me so put one crab onto of the other, so both in one hand. They started to get me a bit but they've not deadly pincers. Then, and I have no idea how, my mask falls off! It immediately starts to sink, so shove my head underwater and see a bleary mask disappearing! Argh!! Just manage to grab it but have to let go of the crabs! No chance in hell of finding them again as there's a bit of a current. So went from euphoria to screaming expletives at sea! A few lessons learnt!

Not had much luck with fish though - only small pollack seen and one fast moving mullet. Just got to stick at it and find some decent spots. :) Always nice to get in though and saw my first cuckoo wrasse the other day.

Hi everyone, some cracking fish in this thread! I'm usually a cornwall spearo but have been in dorset for the weekend, went out at Studland yesterday and saw one sea trout which buzzed me. Vis was about 50cm to 1m and useless really, stuck to the shallows along the cliff looking for flatties but no joy.

Really want to get in first thing in the morning, could be at Portland area for about 07:30 to 08:00 - thinking about osmington mills, ringstead or overcombe (way over to the east of overcombe by the holiday park, looking at google maps)
If anybody wants to meet and dive I would be grateful for some local company, but otherwise can you suggest anywhere please?
I am pretty new to this sport and can't dive more than about 8m so if you're advanced and were thinking of offering me company/advice I don't want to waste your time by holding you back :)
Hope to get some response, thanks guys happy spearing!
Andrew
