Dorset Spear Fishing 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.

Vis report:

Chesil- west bay end zero vis

Chesil cove- 2-3 very milky and a fair wind swell running.

Harbour - sandsfoot - 1-2 dirty and bitty vis

Dropped in for a quickly at the cove, but due to swell and low vis it was not fishable, so jumped back out and walked back across the rocks.

Cheers for the report lee. I did wonder about chesil as it looks flat coming up lanehouse but thought it would take a few days to clear. Sandsfoot would be Bad due to the nor easterlies and rain we had yesterday. Plus the spring tides don't help. Think I may leave it till towards the end of the week before I go seeking

I just had a look at the Condor time table for the fast ferry from Pool to Guernsey.
On the fish in weekend dates they are offering ... Saturday the 4th of August leaving pool at 5am, arriving in Guernsey at 8am, then leaving Guernsey the next day at 9.45pm price £65 return.
That would mean two full days in Guernsey, with just one nights accommodation to find.
If folk are prepared to rough it a bit - there is plenty of room to camp on my lawn!

That's what I've got booked, so anybody who fancies sharing lifts to and from the ferry or just meeting up on the ride there and back then let me know.

Went for a nice dive yesterday with Steve. Took the opportunity of a short calm spell in this lovely summery weather, and headed for a nice shingly stretch of beach to do some bass hunting.

When we got in the vis was only 1-2m, but as we carried on along the beach it got better and better (even with the swell increasing) and after about an hour of swimming we had around 2-4m. Quite a few fish about, nothing huge, but as usual I managed to miss the only bigger one I saw :duh

Spent around 2.5hrs in the water and came home with 3 reasonable size bass, and Steve took home a nice mullet and a bass too.

All in all a very enjoyable dive.

Cheers Ian. And yes, the girls do send me out to get fish! Lorelie (3) and Remy (1) absolutely wolf it down. So much so that I now keep a supply of flounder in the freezer so that I can cook one up for them for a quick meal when they ask for fish! :p

And that's another positive aspect of spearfishing (if you're successful!) - it gives your children absolutely the right attitude towards seafood. My kids love spider-crab because they've seen me go out and get them (and then get overly excited about them). I should imagine that most of their school friends would be horrified at the thought of eating spider-crab if they saw them. I also think that the freshness plays an important role. If your first experience of fish (other than fish fingers) is 10 day old fish...you'll probably grow up thinking it's pretty dodgy food. When it's as fresh as spear caught, it changes everything, even the humble pollack is delicious IMO when freshly cooked.

Couldn't agree more. My wife is a childminder and the children she minds have just demolished plates of pan fried bass with sweetcorn and pasta. They saw me bring it home yesterday after a dive, fillet and prep it and they didn't bat an eyelid. Lucky kids.

Just got back from the Caribbean and nipped down yesterday for a swim, didn’t think it would be much good what with the wind and weather we’ve had. Got down to Sandsfoot and couldn’t believe my eyes, just a small wave and vis out to the end of the pipe, tide was wrong for there though so ended up in at Castletown, tide state wasn’t the best for there either but the vis was an easy 5 meters, had a look along the arm and out on the front of the new inner harbour and found a couple of good size Crabs but no fish.
Nice to get in but it’s a dam sight warmer in Antigua.:):):):)

Wahoo. In my books summer is now here. Just come back from a dive of chesil in the 3mm suit, and lied every minute of it. Water was between 13-15degrees and I was in with Ben (raven21) for 3 hours, and didn't get cold. Unfortunately no fish were taken due to them staying out of shooting range and being very skittish. Still a very enjoyable dive in the sun and good to see mullet and gar fish shooting around.

Vis was around 3-4m but quite milky.
