Dorset Spear Fishing 2012

The map is available easily enough if you google weymouth and olympic restrictions I would link to it but I am on my phone,
Well done Nobby nice haul,
I went out last night with 4 other spearos, perhaps overkil but we were in a big area, I headed right, two straight out and two left.
Vis was not too bad 2-4m in places but milky and patchy at least where I swam. Saw plenty of small fish, pollock, pout, mullet and congers but no Bass. I took a nice goldspot mullet and left three others of similar size. After a swim of about half a mile I came across a whole heap of fishermen and a beach party.. Took that as a good sign not to continue on my current route and swam back covering a bit more ground. Saw probably the same mullet again and they were left to grow again.. One mullet was enough for dinner and I don't prize it enough to stock up on!
Bumped into another of the spearo's who had gone straight out and not seen a thing. That put an end to my plans, there was little point recovering the ground the others were on and the straight out team were now heading left so in need of a pee I jumped out before being forced to use the onboard system!
Got changed and chilled out for a bit but the boys were still going strong so headed home to bed.
All in all an enjoyable dip, I'll let the boys fill you in on their stuff.

Now to decide do I make a trek over Burton Bradstock way for a dip?
Anyone else out today?

Went out last night with will (rowlzy) joe (ickledevil) Ben (raven21) and another Ben (glass eyes I think). Me and will headed left on a marathon swim. Vis ranged between 4m and 1ft. We saw loads of species including red mullet, plaice, flounder, tiny conger, pollack, pout bass and mullet. I caught 3 run of the mill mullet and missed a couple of donkey 5lbers. I'll let will explain what he caught. Overall a good long dive with fish for tea

1st porbeagle SHARK ENCOUNTER......

Just came back (pretty quickly) from a dive with will and Clive. We were out in the water, Clive had a couple of fish and will had a bass. Then I suddenly saw a strange shape out the water right next to Clive, thinking it was a sunfish I was quite excited. Then it turned sideways and I saw the dreaded triangle shape emerging 1.5ft from the surface. The tail fun then emerged and it was a fair distance behind the dorsal fin. Me and will looked at each other and were contemplating swimming away pretty quick. But Clive started shouting, so we thought we had better go an help him. As we swam towards him we could see this fin practically on top of him, pushin him around then circling around. So we thought oh god, it's gunna get messy,see put our heads down looking around underwater, and swam towards Clive to help him, within seconds Clive had already passed us. We looked up and saw the fins following Clive's float and all had an Olympic swim towards the shore.

We all made it out safely with different coloured wetsuits. And luckily Clive and will kept hold of their complete fish. Before that a lovely dive with the sun shining and water was just starting to clear up a bit

Yea. Wish I was reading it as apposed to witnessing it /writing it. Certainly put a stop to our dive. Shame really as the water was clearing up nicely, the sun was out an tree were loads of little fish around....... For a bit anyway

At least you can say you have met the porbeagle and lived now though! Although from what Clive has just said I think its a new one sounds much bigger and grumpier than the usual! Night dive there tonight then ;)

I don't care if it's a new one or not. It wasn't a pleasant meeting I can tell you. Hahaha forgot about the competition, I'll let will have it as he caught more aswel so he deserves it. I'll award him with rep when he posts

Hahaha. Today I wasn't the fastest diver which worried me web more. Just washing the gear off and realised I've lost my snorkel..... Looks like it wasn't my day today. Shot no fish, met a porbeagle shark and lost my snorkel. Result

Sorry for the late report been out enjoying the weather.

Got in last night with matt, joe, ben and ben at the chosen spot. me and matt went on a marathon swim away from the others, on which we saw a variety of species. Just after we got in i spotted a nice big mullet but missed the shot somehow as it was a sitter, so seeing the fish hadn't moved away i called matt over for him to shoot it as I wouldn't have been able to reload in time, and couldn't be having a good fish swimming on by (he repaid the favour later in the dive).

We continued our marathon ending up with 3 Mullet for matt and 4 mullet and a bass for myself.

Feeling happy with last nights performance things were looking promising for todays dive with matt, and clive. Although this wasn't the case....

After working a deeper spot to no luck we moved in to a reef closer to shore, where we found much more fish life! after about 20 mins of working this spot me and matt were having a chat about his dive times when i saw some fish jumping clean out of the water on our far right, he then went whoooaaaa look at that! pointing over to the big dorsal fin sticking out of the water right next to clive, after watching for a few seconds wondering what to do, whilst looking at how far away the shore was. clive called out so we started hesitantly going towards him and the shark! as we approached him he started swimming towards us and more importantly to the shore. I just saw a large dark shadow and that was my queue to follow suit and kick like f*@* towards the shore! we swam in at full speed and didn't stop until we were pretty much on the beach.

so all in all a nice morning dive in the sun turned out to have quite an eventful ending, and what i hope is a once in a lifetime encounter.

Just remember you only have to swim faster than your buddies!!!

Great report will and well done in the fish. I said you deserve to win the friendly comp we had last night as you out fished me and we both had decent mullet. So rep for that. About the shark experience I feel I was tricked into helping Clive, only for him to make a hasty retreat with you leaving me to face a float and large shark coming towards me before turning and combining a one handed front crawl with very hard fin strokes.
