Cheers for the replies guys, looks like a new wetsuit is on the list then followed by a rubber weight belt to replace the useless webbing one!

The beaver suit is plenty warm enough (if not too warm as soon as you step out of the water) but a real pig to get in and out of, weighs a ton and is extremely buoyant.

Jumped in last night. Vis was crap 2 meters.

Managed 7 fair sized bass biggest was 54 cm and the smallest was 47cm.

No mullet seen but plenty of sole and flounder, but left them for another day.

Hey all, pretty new here and to the world of spearfishing. Went for a little swim this morning, got in at around 6.45 to find vis around 2m and didnt see a single shootable fish. Did see some nice wrasse swimming about.

Each time I get in the water I find new things I want to upgrade, really think I need to invest in a proper wetsuit rather than the bulky beaver semi-dry I am currently using!

What is spearfishing like over the autumn/winter months? Worth getting new gear now or waiting until next year?

Also with regards to tides and time of day, is there a magic mix? At the moment finding just after low tide seems to be the most productive.

Hi Tim and welcome to the world of spearfishing.

I echo what the other lads are saying; get a spearo wetty!
Cressi do a nice camo one technica. 5mm is fine for winter but a 7mm would be cosy.

I find most shore dives better on the flood up to high tide, but every spot is different. First light is good.

For now i would stick to the shallows hunting mullet and bass, there are plenty of safe spots in portland harbour like sandsfoot beach that can be productive over high tide (once the olympic restrictions have lifted).

Cheers for that Lee, will look into that cressi technica suit.

Have been getting to know Osmington and Ringstead area over the last couple of weeks, but would be good to check out new places when vis is poor so will have a look around portland harbour once all the olympics stuff has finished. Thanks for the recommendation!

The fit of your wetsuit is just as important. Oceanos wetsuits make made to measure suits cheaper than most off the shelf. I've got one and for value for money, they're hard to beat.

I went from a hood-less scuba suit to the Cressi Technica 5mm that speerolee mentions and couldn't believe the difference in terms of warmth and easy of movement. Awesome suits. Went back in with my scuba suit the other day (with kids on beach) and couldn't believe how #@?*&$% cold it was! I reckon the spearo suits make you seriously woosey.

It does seem to be a 2008 suit so not sure if anything has changed within the last 4 years with regards to how they are made and materials used. The sizing of the one they have in stock looks like it would be a better fit than that of a cressi. Otherwise might look down the made to measure route.

Just buy a MTM Oceanos spearfishing suit they are cheaper than most off the peg suits anyway!!!!

I cannot tell you about the Omer Cayman & do not know anything about it, but if you could get some knee pads on a suit, that would be advantageous if you will be scrambling onto rocks or crawling up pebble beaches in strong surf.
I have found my 5mm Cressi Tecnica great, as it has the knee pads & would probably have ripped the suit on the knees if I hadn't had them as i have had some dodgy exits of late. Also a Long John pant as opposed to a waist high pant(my first suit), a Long John pant would be warmer as it covers up & over your back, my old high waist got to about my diaphragm.

Yes - go for a suit with Long Johns! I massively regret not specifying them on my suit!

Yep have Long Johns on my current semi-dry and can see the benefits.

Foxfish I did look at the Oceanos but with postage and a few added extras its coming out as the same price as the Cressi. It also looks like the turn around is between 3-4 weeks and it would be good if I could get a suit before then.

Cressi Tecnica suit does look a lot better than that Cayman for only a few more pounds. So think i'll give that one a go.

Not sure about the cayman suit but I use a Omer camu 3d suit for winter diving. The neoprene used is a lot softer than the Cressi technica and the fit (for me is very good). On long swims in 0-2degrees C water I am lovely and toasty, anything warmer i over heat and have to pull the hood open to let water in. What size suit are you looking at, as if your the same size as me you can try my suit on??

OK mate, obviously your choice & I don't know how much the suit you are looking at cost anyway!
My last Oceanos with knee pads was around £140 delivered, it did take about 3 weeks to arrive though.

Seems I can get the Cressi at 149, hopefully heading down to Cornwall for the bank holiday so will stop in at the Paigton scuba shop and try one on. If no luck with size I will go for the Oceanos....

Thanks for the offer Scoobaroo, I would be looking at the size 6 for the cressi. My concern is that I am right at the upper limit of the height for that size but bang in the middle for the other measurments given so that will be the deciding factor.
