Dorset Spear Fishing 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I personally put my weight belt over one boulder and across my chest (rambo style) if walking long distances as I find it is easier on my hips and back

Yes, I also do that as well.

I have also been to Worbarrow & it is a bit of a pain to carry the weights that distance, but I have carried a lot heavier over a lot further from my days in the army, but I was of course a lot younger, about half my lifetime ago............ feck.

The added benefit would be to put your catch on the trolley instead of carrying your 20kg of bass/mullet........

So maybe it will not be needed rofl

Some of our Dorset marks are not that accessible and require a bit of yomp to get to them - with a Guardian/Dive Hunter type float and kilos of lead it may make it a bit harder. Worbarrow Bay and Seacombe are two examples.

I'm thinking about trying something like this:

I think a friendly porter to take your gear down to the beach for you is a crackingly good idea!

Hobbit size suit stocked with you in mind!! lol

Guys do you reckon its worth paying the bit extra for the cressi pneumatic gun with the reducer? And ideal length for night diving over mixed bottom with rock 50 or 70cm?
Cheers for any advice, F Christmas been asking...

I have been using my Cressi SL70 (with reducer) for night and day dives for just over a year now, and since buying it my other guns have stayed in the shed. Excellent tool. And the reducer is worth every penny - I use it very often when taking close-range shots or when shooting a fish that is sitting on/over a rock.

Ha ha! Quality mate. Cant wait to hav a look around . Bring on summer!! Training after new year ready for those deep dives. Awsome!! Picasso geared up to the eyeballs. First purchase would b the weight belt! M mate got 1 last season and the stretch on it compaired to my cressi is awsome. More comfort and 0 slipping. Winner!!

So i'm finally back to Weymouth from Thursday till the 29th with the aim to hit the water whenever the vis allows me.

I've just started looking at the weather forecast to try to get the feel where might be worth checking on Thurday night (as it will be dark by the time i am back). I was hoping that if anyone goes past the harbour that you could let me know if anywhere is looking ok at the moment as i haven't been about for a few weeks to see what the present state is.

Cheers

A useful link for Dorset Spearos:

iCoast

Provides tide times and current directions in many of the areas we fish (sadly no current information for Poole & Christchurch Bay although the paid for Navionics App has this).

Thanks - I have now loaded it into Google Earth - it looks very interesting and useful.

Given that the weather looks like it will be settled in morning I am planning a trip down to Lulworth Cove. I've just been comparing the Easytide times for Mupe Bay to those of the times in my Navionics app for my android phone.

There seems be a big time difference between the times quoted (over an hour). Out of curiosity I checked the tide times for Bournemouth tomorrow using both tables, and again there is a big difference.

Easytide has always been ok for me when I have used it. I am not used to Navionics. Do any of us who have Navionics go by their tide tables or do you use something else?

Just kitted my self out with some picasso uk gear thanks to comanche killer and bassanova! I must say I am very impressed with the build quallity; pretty certain i will be using the gear from now on.
Full test of the gear this week and will write up a full report.

I've just had a look at the new Picasso range of spearfishing equipment available. I must say I'm very impressed with the build quality and range of stock Greg and Kevin have. If anyone needs any new gear or fancies updating old gear I would definitely recommend contacting Greg or Kev as I'm sure they can meet your requirements for whatever equipment you require.

Well done lads keep up the good work

I got in at Lulworth Cove this morning just as the sun woke up. Unfortunately the vis was terrible. I couldn't see my fingers with my arm extended out in front of me.

(The water in the stream which runs down alongside the road into the cove was high vis.)

I had a paddle around on my guardian and soon got out near the entrance. There was a bit of a swell running and it looked a bit choppy outside so I stayed inside.

It seemed harder heading back to where I started. The forecast westerly wind was more northerly so that probably explains why.

I spent a good half hour or so just paddling around the cove diving down now and again (being careful not to hit my head on the bottom given the bad vis!).

I'm still getting used to my kit. It feels awkward when surface swimming - I was hoping to be able to move a lot faster than I do. I had 11kilos of lead on me today. I think at about 10 metres I am neutrally buoyant with 10 kilos of lead.

To stay down in the shallows I may need 12 kilos (I have a 7mm suit). If the vis is good I am hoping I can just shoot from the surface where it's shallow.

One thing that does require attention before I head there again is my phone. I am on the Three network and there was no signal in the cove today. I now recall that when I was kayak fishing along there, (a bit more west) I also had no signal with another phone on the Virgin network. Probably got nothing to do with it but on both occasions the nearby range walks were closed to the public.

I will get my phone unlocked and buy a new SIM. Can anyone say with certainty that their mobile network works at the cove when you are by the water? If so what network are you on?

Well that's my stuff washed down and mostly dry. The wind is stirring up again from tomorrow. Doubt I will be in again until after Christmas.
