Dorset Spearfishing 2006

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Stevie - no nothing that big and well done - my fish were the usuals around 2.5 to 3.5 lb on squid and plug. Perfect weather today

With the shite weather forecast this weekend is there anywhere that would be suitable for a quick session?
 
Slowly creeping through the jap weed and I could just see the slate grey shape of a good fish - I aimed and fired. After a short tussle I retrieved the mangiest sore covered mullet you ever did see – tits, after a quick knife in his head I left it for the crabs!

Did see two bass when I wasn’t concentrating and they headed for the hills before I could react.

Vis is rapidly deteriorating as the wind increases – only hope (if you’re quick) is Newtons Cove – but watch out for the speed boats etc.
 
Just back from a dive with almostafish... 6knt tide and big waves! Never mind still managed 2x5lb Bass 1x3lb Bass and 4 nice Mullet (by order of my father-in-law who likes them!) very hard work in that tide, and the waves made breathing up interesting, mouth fulls of water don't help much, but very rewarding though.... Found Bryn a little later playing with a friendly seal!
 
Just to keep you all interested.... I have been talking to my dive mates round the country today all along the South Coast from Sussex to Cornwall I know of several 10lb Bass a few 12lb Bass 1x14lb bass, 1x16lb Bass caught! one guy saw an 18lber but couldn't get his gun on it.

Hope this wind goes away soon!
 
How did he know it was 18lb? Oh! of course how silly of me. It was a bass so it had a scale on it. rofl .

Just jealous really.

Tried diving between Weymouth & Swanage Sat. am (leading upto hi-tide) but viz was bad (1m) with the Easterly wind producing a mild swell. Moved over to Chesil around low tide, viz was good: 10 foot of good viz & somewhat visible beyond that, although increasingly murky. Quite pleasant & quite flat.

Wrasse City
Saw quite a few small & tiny pollock, lots of wrasse of different types & sizes, a few small & medium spider crabs (lots of lobster pots in use). Shot a 2.5 lb wrasse ... brown/copper colour fooled me. It made me rather gun shy for the rest of the weekend - and I consequently I passed up numerous shots, 2 of which could have been decent size bass but were more likely big Wrasse - I guess I will never know now (one presented itself 3 times while I was above it - just couldn't make a positive identification. I dived down & it disappeared...of course). Could probably have got 20lb of Wrasse w/o much trouble - saw one Ballan that was probably 4+lb. Also got a very good look at a garfish which circled me within a few feet twice -- surreal. (Are gar worth eating?).

Saw some German spearos with some v. small fish (inc. some pollock smaller than the ones I had let pass by as too small - but as "wrasse slayer" I guess I can't say much) -- & they ate them on the beach for dinner, with a lobster they had found. V. fresh seafood.

Dived again Sunday off Chesil. The forecast was for an Easterly wind again, albeit 8mph rather than 9, but Chesil cove seem to be getting some wind from the north. Consequently viz was not quite as good & some areas were better than others. Saw 8 other spearos operating at Chesil Cove this weekend (& I was only there for 2 half days - so there were probably more), with numerous anglers too -- although saw no fish worth eating taken (Chesil & the Bill) ... most were returned, a few cut up for bait. Spearo-wise, it was a little crowded early Sunday morning. Thought I recognised somebody off the forum (Gloworm or Flyflicker perhaps?) in the afternoon as I was leaving.

Lost 2 lures, recovered 3!

Went out too Church ope cove on Sat Vis was really poor, then went for a dos round at bowleaze cove but that was just as bad, Getting Frustrated cos Im new to this and am desperate to get my first fish! Also wana get my new gun off! if there is ne1 locally who wants a buddy to train in the art of spearfishing, (that is if you have the Yoda-like patience to teach a young whippersnapper like myself) let me know.:martial

Was that u Mr X with blue fins and Rob Allen float?? If that was you, I was going in just as you were coming out. I was with my mate who was fishing from the rocks.

I was only in for an hour, but I got a nice crab, but didn't see anything big & fishey. Neeeded to get back for Mrs Flyflicker who was roasting nicely on the beach!

Reacquainted myself with Magners cider (from Ireland) at the Cove festival – served with a load of ice – perfect way to end a dive -

Yes, that would be me -- I was in about 23/4 hours & swam back against the current, so you'll forgive me if I looked a little tired/distracted!

I see spider crabs everywhere but have only ever seen one edible crab (& that was small, with only 1 claw!), so you did well, esp. considering all the snorkellers, spearos & scuba divers hunting around out there before you.

[Can't think of Magner's now w/o hearing Thin Lizzy's Dancing in the Moonlight in the background . It's like shipping coal to Newcastle though isn't it!].
 
Went in on sunday with fearthespear and our mate Tommo. It was somewhere on portland (abit less accessable than the cove!). Vis was about 4 metres, maybe 5. Agachoned a bass of just over 8lb, best bass of the season so far. I think that Ben and i just missed you Mr X and Flyflicker, we arrived at the cove inn for the last of the hog roast and a drop of beer! Nice edible John...turning into a specialist crustacean hunter?! Can't wait for your arrival in Cornwall and the curry!

Well done Will and good to hear Tommo was out and I wonder where you were! I think we must have left around 2 to 2:30, after I had some squid - my bowls haven't been the same since!

Mr X, my wife said that she remembers you struggling up the beach! Where did u see me?

Magners is from Clonmel on the banks of the River Suir, which is an amazing trout river and one we have fished many times
 
All, The BSA double header national competition is this weekend. Saturday is Portland Bill and Sunday is Ringstead. All welcome. Kick off time on Saturday Portland comp is an hour early at 09:00, registration at 08:00. £10 entry fee. You will need a blue and white divers 'A' flag for your float. If you are not a BSA member then you will be issued a float number and your £10 also makes you a member of the BSA for the rest of the year free. Ringstead start is at 10:00 (reg from 09:00). Please be aware that parking charges apply for both comps. Top ten places over both days will be awarded prices on the Sunday. Hope to see you there. Clive.
 

Tell me about it, Saturday was officially the worst Vis I've EVER had in Dorset :head The morning surface vis (leading up to high tide) was no more than a metre. You could find 4-5+ below about 7 metres. This made the days dive quite tiring as I clocked up well over 100 dives average 1 min 20 secs at 8/10 metres so I could hang around and try and attract the bass in. Then late afternoon on the outgoing it changed to be 7 or 8 metres plus vis! Shame we had to head off at that point (the hill back to the carpark was a MISSION to say the least) :vangry

You would have been about where me a few friends were when you went between Swanage and Weymouth. I was Chapmans Pool, yourself?
