Dorset Spearfishing 2007

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
This is an email I received from Phil Coates SWSFC@aol.com concerning potential byelaws (see Byelaw 43 for spearfishing)for the future in South Wales:

Dear Mr Davies
No consultation yet pending.
We are yet to fully discuss in Committee in order to even frame any proposed text.
Below I append what Committee are likely to consider !!

Be aware that in a forthcoming "mini" review of our byelaws Committee are keen to consult on a district wide ban on spearfishing of all types.
It comes about as a consequence of the existing byl preventing foul hooking being proposed for extension to flounder spiking. Members thought all such spiking should be prohibited.
I have taken informal soundings of BSAC (who are in support) & Welsh Assoc (no resp yet).
Who else might I contact - organisation wise?

Regards

Phil Coates

Future Quarterly Item – Partial Review of Byelaws

Recommendation

That Members’ views be provided on the draft byelaws below and to note that some informal consultation has commenced with some Associations etc. The matter to then be referred to the 28th September 2007 Quarterly meeting to decide whether to make any byelaws for formal advertisement.

NB The below is a stop gap and whole- scale change of the byelaws might be appropriate when new SFCs take shape with a new remit under new (Marine Bill) powers over a new (All Wales) area.

(a) Possible changes to existing byelaws

Revocation of Byelaw 45 - Scallops – since SI 1717 2005 is more fulsome. Keeping this byelaw might be argued as confusing matters and duplication.

Byelaw 8 – Minimum Landing Size (MLS) for bass – to increase to 40 cm for rod / hook caught fish (i.e. 37.5 cm remains for all net caught fish)

Without this tweak and assuming a Welsh bass SI (MLS of 37.5cm) comes into force, then this byelaw could also be revoked.

Byelaw 34 - Set and drift nets

An easement possibly relax 200m length of set net (possibly also drift net) to 400m possibly only 1000m offshore of the Astronomic low water mark as shown on the latest Admiralty chart.

Possibility of changes to Byl 30 to allow conditional fixed net fishing at Tusker rock (Porthcawl) and Cardiff bay

(NB Need to prior consult Environment Agency, by reference to the provisions of the Salmon Act 1986).

Byelaw 41 – Boat fishing returns

Bass bag limit of 5 fish per person. As requested of SFCs by the Minister.

Clarify that the 5 pots and 100m net is a per boat limit (not per person).

Byelaw 43 – foul hooking

To extend foul hooking to cover also cover any form of “spiking & spearing” at low tide and spear fishing whether using aqualung or not.

(NB: Pre consultation with Diving associations is in hand)

Got in at Chesil Cove over the weekend. The viz was not great with lots of suspended algae or plankton or something, in spite of it looking nice and clear from the beach!

Didn't have long in, but missed one lightning quick bass. They are out there!

There were HEAPS of pollack, but didn't shoot any as I'm not a huge fan of the fish.

Went climbing at Blacknor later in the day and the visibility there looked amazing - is it often clearer there than Chesil Cove? Anyone speared down there?

Had a marathon attempt at spearing something at the weekend, got in at Durdle Door, Portland Harbour and Osmington. Probably spent 6 hrs in the water but only saw 1 mullet! Nightmare! Visibility was ok, bit milky at Durdle Door but 5-6 m at Osmington.

Hi guys, just wondered if any of you had any experience of spearfishing around Bowleaze Cove or the Reef that runs along to the Oasis Cafe. Its only about 10 mins walk from my house and I still hav'nt tried it. Was hoping to give it a go as soon as this weather settles down and the may bloom subsides.

Cheers

Steve

Podge has had a bit of a snorkel around there last summer, said it looked like good ground, am sure he'll post in bit

We've fished there with rod and line and caught a few bass...could be worth a look but only at the crack of dawn when there is no other soul to be seen. Any other time and you'll most likely be mown down by a pesky wind surfer!

Hi Stevie
I did have a little look over at bowleaze last year and although I didn’t see much it does look fishy. I got in right at the end of the beach, if memory serves there’s a small concrete ramp there, swam out around the headland and on along the narrow reef.
Depth was not a problem I would guess around 3-5 meters.
The best bit of advice I could tell you about has already been mentioned by Scottie
WATCH OUT FOR THE JETSKIERS, AS THERE’S HUNDREDS OF THEM.

cheers guys for the info, will give it a go as soon as this wind settles down and let you know how I get on.

Hey Stevie T that could be the perfect night dive spot.No windsurfers or jetski's to worry about and I used to dive bowleaze cove alot in my youth. The reef does hold bass and the sand should hold some flatties.

Stuckinsurry and myself had a look around Portland yesterday; it was windy and brown just about everywhere. Still had a pleasant swim and as the rain was coming down horizontally when we got out If I have a bit more practice I reckon I could make it look easy getting changed in the front of an Alfa Romeo.
Upshot was we had a very good cup of coffee courtesy of Almostafish and his lovely lady wife.

Was nice to get in even if the weather was against us. The wind didnt seem to know what direction it wanted to blow in, so everywhere took a bit of a battering and was pretty murky all over. Vis varied between couldnt see the end of the gun to around 2 metres. Did manage to dive down on a spot that had a puff of sand eminating from it, probably a flattie that decided it didnt want company!

Take a look for yourself on the webcam: BBC - Dorset - In Pictures - Weymouth Weathercam

Forecast looks windy (great for sailing), you might need to find some shelter (Harbor/east side?). Forecast for Sunday looks less blowy than Sat.

[The forecasts are notoriously inaccurate for the coast though, esp. local wind conditions.]

Forecasting isnt an issue for me as a navigator I use guru/gb wind map as well as HF weather-fax from northwood but I really meant the Vis. I'll be split between castle cove and WPNSA as I've got one son at each. Springs at the moment. do you tend to get more fish then. seems so down here in plymouth

Doc as of last week you couldn’t see the hand that held your speargun let alone the end of the gun itself, which made for a fun dive to the bottom.:rcard
Not to sure about this weekend as I live 65 miles away but I may know a bit more on Saturday P.M. if I hear anything I’ll post then.

Many thanks Mr X,didnt know about Weymouth weathercam that's a great and usefull site.

The weather for Monday looks great,so I'll give a try, hopefully the viz is better,if anyone knows about that please let me know. I have a little question,I often read about:EDIBLE CRABS which are many time mentioned. There are also not EDIBLE one?If yes can you please descibe me some? I'd like to eat some (good) they are so tasty.

Edible crabs are Cancer pagurus
Cancer032.jpg

It seems like most sea creatures are edible. (Spiny) Spider crabs, ("Maja squinado" or "Maja brachydactyla") , are edible, although most of the meat is in the legs, so really only worthwhile for larger (usually male) crabs-- although I'm told the females have more meat in the body (think about it...). Getting the meat out is quite a lot of work (search the Guernsey threads to see how they eat them).

Crabs: NE Atlantic Intertidal (I read somewhere that there are 96 species of crab around Britain!)

BTW I see the Fleet got a mention as "priority vulnerable habitat": BBC NEWS | UK | UK 'failing on many key habitats'
