Dorset Spearfishing 2007

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I'm down in portland this weekend with my sailor sons so am bringing my gear.
Whats it like at the moment??

Doc I’ve been told from a very reliable source that the viz in the harbour isn’t the best but should be fishable.
The biggest problem down there this weekend is going to be all the boats of which I take it that you’re sons are part of.:)
Hope this helps
Paul

If anyone knows about freediving on the Isle of Wight I would be interested. I started a thread here.

Had a look down at Portland yesterday with Almostafish and guess what, the viz is still shite.:head
Still it was nice to meet Doc in the water and Flyflicker out at the Bill with his lovely daughter.:D
Just a word of warning to all, if a certain Mr. Spencer (AKA Almostafish) offer’s you a quite ride out to the Bill for an after dive coffee and cake SAY NO.
108 MPH ON THE BACK WHEEL WHILE OVER TAKING A CAR.
Still the cake and coffee out at the café was worth the terror.:)

Hi podge and almostafish
yes good to put a face to a name as I dont see many spearos here in plymouth. there were 6 of us on sunday all coming out blank so a busy spot but the viz was soupy as you say.
Sounds like an exciting ride though

108 was just the point you closed your eyes and tucked your feet under my armpits! rofl Nowt like look at the edge to make you happy with what you've got eh!

I had a race back from West bay with an Aprillia RSV1000R... Now that was fast.:t

Hope everybodys well and thats me back to sea until the 22nd of June so see's you all then.

B. :t

Myself and fearthespear are going looking for bass tomorrow night, and probably at the weekend too. Bank holidays can be a good time to find a nice little tucked away spot, although it is looking like neaps.. I'll let you guys know what the score is... at the moment it is bass 3, Will 0, I'm aiming to get at least 1 on my side... Flyflicker, are you in full working order yet???

All guns a'blazing --- :)

Too hot for mayfly fishing, so it will be a little plugging tomorrow :)

& Saturday I'm getting wet :) :) :) :) :) :) (I hope)

popped down to portland harbour today few bait fish and loads of spider crabs viz 2-3milky meters at best! goin to try south devon, cornwall and south wales the weekend got to find me some fish!

Yep, i'm coming down on sunday. Girlfriend is coming with me but she wont get in (yet, fingers crossed for later in the summer, need to show her the lack of bass everywhere - she should never have watched Gordon Ramseys F Word - she now believes that the sea floor is paved with bass and i'm just a rubbish shot - which is partly true!). Gonna bash the mackeral off chesil beach at high tide if no fish are going to surrender.

Had a dip in at Tilly Whim. I dived it just off the low up to mid tide. The vis was a 'okayish' with most patches about 3m. I went back towards a certain spot where Glowworm/Rowan and I have had good success before:t picking up some lobster and pollack on the way and checking all the holes which did not have any bass in.
The certain spot has a set up with some fairly hefty boulders slightly exposed at low almost forming a sort of wall 90degrees out from the cliff and current. They have points between the rocks covered in kelp/stringweed, and smaller boulders where you can come up to say 'battlements' and wait for the bass to come up to you while right down hiding in the kelp. There is a reason why the bass are there, but thats another thing(check my gallery). I repeatedly aspetto and managed 5 bass biggest about 3lb. Not massive but i'm coming 'a begging at the moment. I was most peeved that I missed a gift of a chance when I was taking the bass when a large mackeral with beautiful colours came steaming in on my continued aspetto's. He slowed right down and the 90cm gun was inches off him before I ran out of 'battlement' space to keep swinging on him. I had to take 2 bass through the face as they came up because of this little issue.
I found out a few of things yesterday.
I have to buy a 75cm bandgun for Dorset...
I am way unfit after winter and my sinus op and was glad for the shallow tide!:crutch
..and while hanging it off the float trolling along, dont catch the unloaded shaft's barb of my cressi pneumatic 70 in the kelp while the line is in the trigger release....it snaps off without a trigger pull:head .
Come on you burglars....:ko
