It's called groundswell - waves generated out in the Atlantic that have nothing to do with local wind conditions.

Can anyone explain why after more than a week of northern winds there are still waves with oposit direction??? Does it have something with currents/tides??? I'd like to know a bit more how to predict sea conditions...

It's not all bad mate - it makes for hoofing surfing conditions!


Storms far out at sea, well beyond our local weather, send their waves across the ocean to arrive at our shores.

Not looking good around Portland mate, swell running with big tides... There still might be a couple of places with shelter.

Had a look around lulworth and sawanage area....lots of groundswell and water the color of tea!

Just got back from a dive with Ben. Searched around in good viz (around 4m I guess), but saw nothing much except a tiny mullet, a small pollack, a lumpsucker (never seen one before, so that was interesting), and I took a flounder and a plaice. Nice to have got in, and good to get a couple of fish after a long time with no viz.

We could see Lee and Alan off in the distance - torches and voices carry a long way across the water. We were in for about an hour and a half, but they were still in when we got out. No doubt we'll hear how they got on soon enough...?

Yeah...that was us! Managed 16 nice scallops between us....cud have had loads more....but left them for another dive.

We also git a thornback ray each..mine was 4lb and Al's was 6lb. I missed a bass of 2lb ish.

Just eating my scallops now!

No vis further east of Weymouth. ..just brown with a fair sized ground swell running.

Oooh, scallops, nice one. Those sound like good size rays too, although I wouldn't shoot one after my last ray experience - very tasty to eat, but a right pain in the bum to prepare with all that horrible slime! Glad to hear that you saw a bass, nice to know they're around.

We could hear your voices so clearly across the water, it's funny how the sound carries.
