I took my friend out for his first dive on thursday at ringstead and the quick release on his belt failed, after being in the water for 3mins, resulting in him loosing £80 worth of lead! If anyone finds it they will be rewarded with a crate of beer! It is located close in about 15m off shore about 20m down the beach towards white nothe.

bah at 10 metres hit the rocks before I seen them oh well off to pub .
I did the exactly same thing there but was abut further out. Mine was a cress belt with a quick release and the float line caught it and pulled it open. I now use the marseilles type with a buckle which has been fine. Luckily I was diving with bob and sausage from off here and he had a spare belt with him. Good luck on finding it.
Yeah I am using the marseilles belt and its nice and secure! Had a dip in worbarrow bay yesterday thinking it would be good due to the shelter ... vis was up to 4m in places but for the 3rd time since I started spearfishing I still havnt seen any silvers! I am comfortably diving at 5m for around 50 seconds at a time staying dead still! Previous two dives were at ringstead where all I managed to see were a few wrasse! Can anyone give away one location where I can get my hands on anything that isnt a pollock or a wrasse!

If you read back on these threads & not too far, there area a couple of guys that have done that(by mistake) & found it impossible, as they just bob around on the top of the water & weren't stable at all. It looks like you need the weight so at least you are stable & not forever trying to remain at a constant swimming/viewing angle.
I agree with Scott on this as its Sod's law that you see a nice fish in the bottom just out of range when you leave the lead at home. For long walks I strap the belt over one shoulder and across the chest as it makes it easier to carry
Don't worry too much about not seeing silvers. Everything is over a month late this year and the majority of silvers are coming from night dives. I can tell you the current British Spearfishing champion (2012) hasn't even shot a bass yet, an that's not for lack of trying. The water isn't really warm enough at the moment for the school bass to feed properly, so the majority of the bass vein caught are a decent size that have hung around all winter. And not forgetting the bloom is affecting everything at the moment. As soon as the bloom clears and the vis is better there should be the usual shoals of mullet kicking around at ringstead and other venues. Just stick at it and don't concentrate too much on shooting silver fish as the fish can pick up on tension in the water (apparently) so instead concentrate in being relaxed and enjoying the diving

When at ringstead, try two approaches: 1: stay over the reef and close in amongst the weed and keep on the move as stealthy as poss for mullet and bass.
Or swim straight over the reef and fish the sand holes 8-10m using your said method. HTH

I concur, with the relaxing & obviously being quiet.
In addition, you should NOT be making quick movements, no snapping of the head from right to left because you caught site of something or nothing. Just slow head movements, slow arm movements, do not hold onto the gun too tightly as if it is a white knuckle ride.
The lateral line on fish sense vibration & movement & possibly whatever else we give off when we are not as relaxed as we should be, but also used for prey & maybe coming into investigate us if we are not too loud & predator like. I am no expert by any means by the way.
It will come, as my first few years were real crap, where others seem to get it straight away. But if you remember the above, then they will come.
Back from north devon....and I can confirm that woolacombe putsborough croyde and suanton have been very badly effected by the May water. The sea looks like gravy!!
I did manage a quick dive in the sunshine at a spot nr Ilfracombe. Diving to 16m managed a pollack of 3lb and 2 bass of similar size. ..seen a huge turbot! !! But didn't see it at 16m over sand until it saw me and belted off....grrrrr
Well hopefully back out hunting in dorset this afo

A little late getting this on but thought it could be of use to some. Chris (slicky) and i went on a bit of a mission on Friday night. We stopped first at Ringstead and ran over to check the vis. We bumped into a couple of speros just getting in (sorry I didn't catch your names!) as they were jumping in there we decided to head somewhere else to get max coverage for one night! so the idea was to head over to Warbarrow aiming to get in around 0030. Unfortunately when we got there the gate down to the car park was locked with a sign saying closed during hours of darkness! we were gutted but persevered and headed over to K Bay. And guess what same deal here too (getting a little hot now as we are fully suited and ready to go in!). so figured we could head back and jump in at Lulworth for a couple of hours. Parked up and crossed over to the beach.... Milky! By this point we are both pretty miffed! so we said well lets head back to Ringstead and at least do an hour or so there. When we got there we could see the two guys down White Nothe end heading back. We looked at the vis (tide had dropped a bit by now) and looked naff so we walked along the beach to have a look 200m down.... Still looked rubbish and so we decided to call it a night and go crawl back into bed!!!
Has anyone managed to get in at Tynham or K Bay at night in the summer?? how did you do it?? we are considering parking up and walking/riding bikes to get down to Warbarrow when Chris gets back!
Chris went over to Warbarrow the next day and the water was crystal clear!! so it would have been awesome if we did get in!
Anyone hear anything about the comp at ringstead over the weekend?

not suprised abnout the comp being cancelled it looked bad! hope to get in somewhere this weekend not sure day or night yet. will keep an eye on vis reports.
