Dorset Spearfishing 2013

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
That's a shame mate. I was at the ringstead comp..... In fact I was the one who checked vis for the other divers and confirmed it to be naff so the comp got cancelled.

Be careful around k bay as its a voluntary nature reserve and they get quite funny about people Spearfishing there. Apparently if you do wish to dive there you are advised to keep guns in a gun bag and hide any fish you catch as there are rumours they can and will ban people from the smedmore estate which owns the land around that area.

I understand there were issues with a loaded gun being dropped and lost too! just headed over there as we were in the area not somewhere we would choose to frequent! we were planning to be descrete about it I assure you!

Alright mate

Let me know if you want a dive buddy to go out around Dorset.

Chris

Hi All,

I'm currently posted to Bovington and have got myself kitted out for spearfishing. Went for the first time in Devon at the weekend and have got the bug (and thats with bad vis and my admin up my hoop).

Got lots to learn and really want to smash as many trips as possible this year. If there are any trips around Dorset/Devon I'd love to tag along.

I'm also a keen kayak angler and would like to do some spearfishing from my kayak.

If you don't mind a newbee tagging along please get in touch.

All the best

Danny

It may sound odd but don't stare at the fish either. Try to act casual and use your peripheral vision.
Thats a fact , do not make eye contact fish seem to sense it, they often say that about sharks ! if you see them they do not attack they will just circle and watch you. If you read reports its often a surprise attack . Have often found when I am freediving and day dreaming I look around and hey there sat behind me is a big bass. rofl

Funny say you should that, I was laid on the surface relaxing before a dive on Sunday. I shut my eyes just for a few moments and when I opened them I was surrounded by a shoal of about 20-30 small Mullet.

Jumped in last night with Alan......spent till midnight looking for vis from lyme to Portland was brown sludge :( :(

Found a spot with 3 meters vis 'the crap spot' but hey it had vis!

Wierdly the most prolific fish of the night was mr gilthead bream; we must have seen around 40 juveniles and one monster of 5-6lb!!! I was busy on the sandy bottom playing with an aquarium size one, I looked up and spooked I massive gilt just yards from me....grrrr.

Anyhow ended up with a few bass each a squid a a few scallops. And got home at 4:30 am. Gert lush.

The chap on ebay is out of stock and on hols for 2 weeks, so will be ar least a month before I get one. Others on ebay are from HK, so again a long wait

New or second hand....I don't mind, I just need one now.

Lee, I was looking for the same look at Professional high quality LED torches, LED Lenser, Fenix, Maglite, Nitecore, Xtar, Princeton TEC, Nite-Ize, Silverpoint £57.99 torch direct.co.uk
I pursume it's the same model or have they upgraded?
Let me know cause thinking of adding to my kit, have a yezl with 260 lumen had a couple of years from same guy. I'm happy to risk Chinese torches but only from uk supplier.
Might use my old yezl and just add cheap 800 lumen to my arm with strap for this season.

Sorry if bit long winded been on nights

Mate 1 lucky Gilt! Made myself a scallop and lobster butter to go over the bass, ridiculously scrumptious:-) all things considered, it could have been far worse!!!

Lee,
Might be worth looking at getting a new Cree XM-L U2 module to drop into the old torch? Only about $12 and free shipping http://dx.com/c/flashlights-lasers-999/flashlight-parts-and-tools-917/drop-in-modules-953

I got some of the Cree modules a while back for about £5 and modified an old SL4 dive torch I had to massively increase output rather than buy a new torch. Works a treat.

Cheers

Back from north devon....and I can confirm that woolacombe putsborough croyde and suanton have been very badly effected by the May water. The sea looks like gravy!!

I did manage a quick dive in the sunshine at a spot nr Ilfracombe. Diving to 16m managed a pollack of 3lb and 2 bass of similar size. ..seen a huge turbot! !! But didn't see it at 16m over sand until it saw me and belted off....grrrrr

Well hopefully back out hunting in dorset this afo :)
