Cracking fish lee! After doing alot of reading I see that you guys have your protected spots that you hold close to you. I was wondering what tools you use to find these secret spots or is it just a case of trial and error over a few years? Was thinking about getting the hydrographic charts of the uk to find some unique spots ... Any thoughts? Also has anyone ever had any sucess at st ives? I will be there for a couple of months this summ

looks like an amaizing trip Lee!
tried on Sat night looked at newtons first absolutly no vis. Then headed over to P Castle, a farther son team (i assumed) were just getting out at dusk. Said it was around 2m vis. headed along the pier but torch just picked up every floating particle so didnt get in. checked fleet and small mouth then castle cove on the way back but nothing worth getting my lilly white ass out in gale force winds for! shame, not sure I can get in next weekend :waterwork

Unlucky mike...hence why we buggered off to Cornwall.
Seriously the vis was so good; I think I've only ever seen that at church ope cove once!!
I reckon we could have taken 50-60 bass 2-3lb range if we wanted; but we left the schoolies to grow nice and fat. We picked of the 3.5-4lb fish; which there were plenty of and with the odd donkey and loadsa mullet.
Seen one nice big GH bream but I was stood up in knee deep in a muddy estuary mouth at low tide. seen it from above out of the water. ..grrrrrrrrr
Only seen one other very small GH bream. The plan was just to get bream...but my first fish was a 9lb bass; and thus the plan changed to BASS hunt!!!!!
We dived at 3 different areas night and day. Beaches, estuaries and headlands.
I converted my torch into the bat signal; this seemed to call in the better fish. Maybe the standard round beam/spot spooks the fish and the bat signal creates a calming safe and secure feel.

I am down in Weymouth with work for a couple of days and might be able to get a quick dive in tomorrow evening. Could anyone recommend a decent spot in either Weymouth or Portland for a relative newbie (been diving a couple of years, but not massively confident in a strong tide)?

Spud - I'm afraid the vis is rubbish in all areas at the moment 
If you are new please don't do Portland because of the dangerous tides etc. stick to Portland Harbour, there may be a little vis tomorrow evening - if you are lucky! cheers John

Had one very good day off Bally Bay a couple of years back.

Spud... Castle town is your best bet for a little vis + easy access and free parking! maybe a couple of metres if your lucky!

Learnt an important lesson today ... just because the brown disappears 200m out doesnt mean that there is vis. Got in this morning at Newtons and couldnt see a thing then shot on to Castle Town which was holding 3-4m in places. Still no silvers @seen, (guessing the low tide didnt help), however was good to be in the water. Lots of wrasse and a couple of spidercrabs about. Wasnt sure of the taking size for the crabs so I left them! Torch came today so I am hoping night diving will bring me some dinner!

Just been for a casual (yea right) run to clear the head.... Vis around Castletown an ham beach looks pretty good. Hard to estimate but I'd say a good 4m in close

Just been for a dip at newtons which had 1m vis tops, so went round to sandsfoot which was a bit better at around 2.5m but didnt see anything except a few spider crabs. Met scoobaru on the beach on the way out, nice to meet you.
Hopefully the vis clears up a bit in the next few days before the wind messes it up again at the weekend.
