Dorset Spearfishing 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.

Had a similar experience with a huge lobster. Got my hand on the carapace but as I was swimming to the surface it moved a bit and caught the tip of my finger in the crushing claw. Happily the claw was so big it had a large gap for my finger to avoid serious damage. I let go of the carapace so I could free my finger which I managed to do but now the cutting claw was coming for me. Instinctively I grabbed a claw in each hand and held them shut. Next moment I was just holding the claws :(

Consolation though was that the two claws alone weighed just over 3lb :)

Hi,
Was hoping someone on here could let me know what the vis situation is like in dorset at the moment. I m hoping to head down tomorrow morning but don't want to waste my time if its anything like its was in Torbay last week.

Lol...lucky you there was a gap large enough for your finger! Personally my favourite part of a lobster....:-)

That must have been one hell of a lobster!!!

I hope I'm lucky enough to see one like that one day; hopefully I'll get a good one during my 2 week Guernsey raid next month.

It has always been custom and practice to only cook lobster ( and crab ) from live , I assume you were OK after eating these ? how long between acquiring them and cooking them ? I have done the same with crabs on occasions and had no problems , but do not wish to push my luck too much !!! Terry...

Grabbed the claws about 3.00 am(from live lobby) & cooked them up about 10.30 pm the same day, so only about 7 hours difference & I am fine after eating them.

Probably no more than 5 hours maximum. Like you I was a little bit concerned but they were far too good to waste and I thought they would be lower risk than a whole lobster as they were pure meat with no squishy bits.

I think it is more to do with the shell fish organs decomposing very quickly after death & infecting the flesh but that might be an old wives tale?

In Guernsey it is illegal to land crab legs or claws that are detached from the body however there is an active black market because the bigger boats who fish 2-3 thousand pots will inevitably pull off claws when extracting the carbs & lobster from the pots.
Naturally I don't deal with these type of people so I have never bought a mixed bag of delicious lobster & crab claws.

I think there are fishery regs about "claws" only something like only 1% of total catch landed can be claws ,and up to 4k fine for deliberately de clawing live crab ! Terry....

I took a gamble and went yesterday afternoon at durdledoor. I only chose this spot as its the only spot in Dorset I ve been to before, I couldn t even see my hands. I don t know if it was bad selection on my behalf but vis was really good when I dived here last summer.

Got in yesterday evening. Church Ope first, but the viz was only about 1m, despite looking crystal clear from the top. Ah well, on to a couple of backup spots. Got in at the first one, saw two small bass and lots of small flounders.

On to the last backup spot and swam about for an hour or so in 2-3m milky viz. Hardly saw any fish at all which was a bit disappointing - had quite high expectations after last week's dive.

Came out with three bass, so a nice result, but they were the only 3 fish I saw that were of a takeable size.

Went for a Dorset dusk raid at a spot protected from westerlies, stayed until 2300 got a nice bass of 4lb on the nose for my efforts only saw two the other was 1 & 1/2 fish which I left to grow.

Well chuffed first fish of the season, however did break my bladder at the entrance to where you blow it up for my reef 45 (heavily adapted to become similar to a dive hunter).

Anyone know where I can buy a new bladder - it is the same size as a dive hunter...

I use this stuff for repairs. Have used it in my dry suit and the latex bladder in my RA float. Its absolutely brilliant and it lives in my save-a-dive box.

Thanks Trelawney it's the actual inlet which has come away from the main body of the bladder though. So I don't think there will be a patching up fix!

Probably a replacement bladder now...
