Dorset Spearfishing 2013

Any update on viz along the Dorset coast, ideally Portland area? For this saturday I'm a bit torn between ok-ish reports from Sth Hams and not great reports from Dorset, but saving a longer drive by going to Dorset

In Durlstone bay there was 2-4m vis this morning. Some bass and small mullets seen but no big ones.

Swam from preston beach to osmington mills, vis was 0.5-2m, but mostly 0.5.

Only seen one single bass of 2lb, but Alan nailed himself a 6lber.
A bit of a crap short dive , but nice to get home early for a change.

Went down to worth matravers today! great vis this morning but went down to about 2m by this afternoon! Saw a lovely big bass and went and missed it to my shame! didn't really see much else worth shooting after that! Still nice to have a little bit of diving fun with some good vis though

Would you say the vis was better on the ebb than on the flood? That's what I have found when I have been down there but it may just be a coincidence...

Yeah! me and my friend did think that was why the vis went downhill! does make sense I suppose! wish I got down there a bit earlier now!

Generally speaking it could be the same Southbourne way also. I need more dives down here to see if there is a pattern.

Yeah I want to try some more dives down worth so may go in the week a couple times and se how it goes!

Ended up diving near the windsurf centre in Weymouth, went in there as a guy on a kayak had seen some flounder and mullet in the shallows. Ended up not staying in for that long - did not feel fishy at all, and the viz was less than 2m in the deeper parts.
Thought I'd try round the other side of Weymouth, near the castle, but seemed too low tide, and saw spearolee's post so gave it a miss!
Was good to get in and have some experience of some where other than sth Devon.
Later on yesterday got a pic of three large bass my usual dive buddy had caught in sth hams on the same day!
Next time will prob be Devon, and camp the night.

Just got back in from a bit of a later dive than usual. Went out just before the sun went down working an area of sand with steep reef drop offs nothing but small Pollack and huge Wrasse coming in. Lots of emerging sandeels some even hitting me as they came out. Finished off with a bit of torch time as it became dark in a different spot but the visibility was not great making things a bit of an exercise really.

Jumped in last night at another new spot for me.
Vis was 5m +
This time the swim was a bit too enthusiastic; had my 25year old brother in tears being towed by myself for a 3.5m swim back to the car!! "Lee I can't move my legs, seriously I can't swim anymore"
Anyway he had more jumbo mullet than he had ever seen before, which kept him busy whilst I nailed a nice amount of bass 2.5lb -5lb range.

One donkey seen and hit to high by my brother and promtly swam off, est 9-11lb.

I seen a couple of 6-8lbers but couldn't get a shot off.

5m+ that's a result.

Lee, am I right in thinking you now use a 5mm suit? If so, did you overheat towing your brother back for 3.5miles? - I am currently using a 7mm but looking for a 5mm whilst the water is this warm. I tend to end up finning quite a lot with my guardian generating heat.

I use a rob Allen 3mm at the moment and ptob till mid November.

During the winter the 7mm was fine. This time of year wearing one that thick is probably dangerous! It's when the sun comes out that things really start to heat up.
If I don't move around much it's tolerable but I like to fin a bit also.

Decent catch there speerolee. Haven't posted on here for quite some time as I've been overseas for a couple of Years. Has anyone got any vis reports for poole area.

I wear a 5mm all winter even when sea temp went to 5 degrees. I fish throughout the year. You Just need good gloves and socks

Ah brilliant i was torn between getting a 5mm and 7mm so i will go for the 5! Would you recomend any suppliers of gloves and socks on the net or do you buy from a local shop?

Picasso uk for 5mm wetsuit and socks. Haven't tried their winter gloves. I can definitely say that they keep me toasty.

I use o three 5mm open cell slip skin gloves.
