Ok so had a dive this morning didn't see an awful lot but watched a sea trout go past me and a nice calm day to be out. However I am struggling to identify a fish I spotted feeding on the bottom sand it was about 6-7 inch's long coloured a bit like a mullet with its mouth on the bottom of its head, 2 barbules it was using to sift through sand and a very upright squarish dorsal fin. I have tried looking online for mini species and know if I saw a picture of it I would recognise it but cant find anything like it any ideas ?
Taste like pot bait to me but I don't like strong tasting fish, red mullet always look nice on a plate but have a freshwater fish taste & soft flesh.
Red mullet are very common in Guernsey around this time of year but you only really see them at night (especially on restaurant plates)

Managed to get in a do a bit of snorkelling out Portland bill area these last few days, ( staying in close to avoid the tide ) was in the water for about an hour yesterday ( no suit ) but didn't get in empty handed. Took me gun and managed to bag myself two nice mullet me and the misses cooked up on the BBQ outside our hut 
. Viz was about 4-5m but as the tide got higher the worse it got was milky.
That's probably going to be the last semi dive from me until next year due to a back operation soon

Ok yes thanks for the reply's it was a Red Mullet that was not very red would never of thought of thinking it was one of those purely on the colour of the fish anyway that was a new one for me - always learning.
Did a second dive this afternoon loads of Bass about all a bit small, waited and kept going until I found a single fish that was "in". Also took a golden grey mullet not my first choice of fish but its been a lean year so far.
Visibility was more than good enough for spearfishing.

Jumped in at 11pm last night at chesil cove and swam to southwell just before the bill vis was very good. Cive was 4m but opened up to 8m + as we progressed. Unfortunately it was really really crap! Plenty of mullet about, but very few bass. I only took 4, three of them 3lb and one 5-6lber alan also took around the same, but with a bigger bass of 6-7lb. No donkey's seen at all 
. I can safely say that I wont be doung that long swim ever again; mr porby can have the mullet all to himself. Matt- mr porbeagle sends his regards and wonders when he will bump into you again..........brrrrrrrr

Ok enough talk of sharks please, I don't want to be thinking about that later today when I get in thank you very much Lee lol !
Walked 2 miles with my gear from home to Hengistbury Head this morning.
The plan had been to fish the ebb taking the tide back to where I live. However tide times and what I thought the current would be doing didn't quite correlate. 1 hour before low water, the tide was gently flooding heading east. I will fish it on the ebb again but get in a bit earlier next time.
When loading the gun, the bead which helps retain my dynema wishbone cracked - this is the first time I have been out without a spare wishbone! Anyway, turns out there was nothing to shoot. Viz was mostly 2-3m, lots of wrasse around some up to 3-4lbs. Saw lots of sandeel and a large pipe fish in the shallows.
I had my crab hook so used that instead. In the deeper areas I was diving down to about 10-12 metres searching for crabs and lobsters. I did see a few (plus some in pots which I left). I had difficulty getting the crabs out from under rocks... I need to get the right technique as the crab hook mostly made then go to the back of their lair. When I got one out it was in full attack mode... couldn't seem to get the right angle to grab it.. perhaps a mini snare will make it easier or perhaps their pinch is not all that with 5mm gloves and I should just go for it! ... underwater foraging book should be with me soon -hopefully they'll be some tips in there..

Anyone use or used a Beuchat Marlin Elite 85cm before?? There is one for sale in Dorchester and wondered if it was worth going to look at?

Does anyone know of any good spots near Bridport. Fieldy and I have been going out from West Bay on Black Rock, but it seems limited. If you go out deeper it is just sand and all we are seeing on the rocks at depths of 4-6m are 30cm Pollack and Wrasse (big uns).
Any pointers gratefully received!
