Dorset spearfishing 2014

Had a little dip down on the eastern purbecks this morning. In 2hrs to low then 2hrs up. Viz decent 4-5m close to the cliffs and 3-4m further out. Was expecting a mullet fest but they failed to show, very quiet all round despite some cracking looking ground, huge boulders coming 5-6m up in 10-15m depth. Clear gravel and lots of kelp, seen the odd bass. Came home with 3 sizeable fish. Even though it was a small tide the ebb was pushing through faster than I could swim, good job we planned to drift west on the ebb and return on the flood. Seen a group of spearos on a grey rib heading west.
Got in at Lulworth, worked my way to Mupe Bay and walked back from there. Few fish were seen - of note were 2 schools of mullet out of range. Spoke briefly to a couple of pairs of spearos - one pair had a kayak and the other speedboat.
I took one token pollack (bit small but sizeable). The band on my speargun broke so need to order a new one... think it may be well over £20 for a bit of rubber - ouch...
(should I consider going the DIY route or just buy the manufacturers replacement rubber band?)
My trolley worked very well for its intended purpose although it was still cumbersome lifting gear up and down narrow cliff steps and walking down overgrown paths where single file is the only way through. Fortunately for most of the way back the path was ok for the trolley. Without it, all my gear would have been on my back making the hot summers midday walk back to car much harder work.

Solo dive last night 3mullet biggest 6.5lb 1 average bass, 1 sole to just under 3lb some brown crabs and a lobby
not bad considering I really struggled to shoot straight! Missing a really good bass 7-8lb and a shed load more smaller ones!

Been in east of weymouth several times over the weekend, had a 6lb bass, lobster, and a couple of smaller ones on thursday night but have only seen a couple of silvers all weekend, so swapped the gun for the camera and got a few shots. Plenty of big jellyfish still around.

little dip during the early hours, lots of small red mullet and giant barrel jellyfish.
picked out 2 bass biggest 5lb, my dive buddy had 1 just under 7 and one around 4lb.

really enjoyed reading through these past posts.. heading on down to Portland this coming weekend.. plan to dive Chesil cove again (enjoyed it last time we were down) but as we're staying in the Portland bunkhouse, wondered if anyone had any advice on nice marks close to their? I know the tides can be a bit iffy round Portland, so wondered where the "kindest" spots were...
3rd Annual Member Meet in the UK will be held in Guernsey (Channel Islands) again between 8th – 10th
We still have room for a few more members to join in the fun.
The spearfishing competition entry is full as we limit the number to 20 divers, however there are still opportunity's to free dive with Apneaboy who will be running a two day freediving course.
Of course you can just come on over & join in the evening entertainment, go you own way spearfishing around our coast & still have time to watch the daily weigh ins !
Come on over and dive our legendary waters where so many British records have been caught... both diving or fishing... you will be welcome.

Hi All,
Quick question, heading down to Portland with my buddy Nick who posted above, Would like some advice on staying safe in the tides round the area. Planning to go in Chesil cove at some point. Also Church Orpe looks nice. Any advice on if its safe to drop in near the the ledges and red crane area? Also any places to avoid, not looking for anyones marks. Just want to stay safe and have fun.
