hi guys new to Dorset coast just moved down from Brighton. Iv got some gear on order looking to get stuck into the sport, bit of a newby, i'm look for some local guys who would perhaps show me the ropes and a few spots, being new to the area I don't no anyone and don't fancy lone diving . I have access to a 7 metre rib some weekends so can get around , also wouldn't mind organising some trips to hard to reach or offshore spots with a few blokes if that sounds good. anyway just wanted to say hello and possibly make some new friends who share a love for spearing.

Jumped in at the weekend, vis very poor 0-2m but managed a donkey 64cm fat mullet and a 43 cm bass

Hello chaps,

planning my first dive of the year for Monday and thinking I should get involved in the forum.

Sorry to pee on your fire but viz on the purbecks is nearly nil with this strong easterly and big tides. Wind is NE bit less than yesterday, so you may be just ok. I went yesterday and found viz on a short stretch under some tall cliffs protected from the wind and swell. There was about 4m at best, improving to 6 at high tide, but 1m in the chop and swell. Wind was straight over the cliffs out to sea, but at sea level a strong wind was blowing inshore, go figure? Did manage some success though, including my first squid, never seen one before and measured 15 inches at the mantle. Looks like the start of a bloom coming too :-( Happy hunting.

Well, got in the water yesterday. South coast of the purbecks but managed to find some calm water in the lee of the wind. Still a bit chilly, and my breath holding was fairly poor, vis 2-4m largely with spots where it was better. Sadly nothing silver seen, and more sadly there is definitely some bloom developing. Nice to be in though, get the ball rolling on the 2015 season!

Here's a question - to put it in context, I've been spear-fishing now for 3-4years I reckon so know reasonably well what I'm doing (maybe).

It wasn't feeling very "fishy" yesterday. No bait fish, little pollock or wrasse around. As soon as I get in and the water's like that I do tend to start feeling that there aint really going to be much luck vs the bass and mullet etc. Does everyone else feel that way? I definitely associate more active general sea life with potential success.

Some days certainly seem there's less happening, but you ain't gonna shoot any sat on your couch. It's easy for me to get despondent if things seem a bit quiet, but it only takes to see a handful of fish to raise hopes. I'm sure we've all had days where nothing's going on, then all of a sudden 2 or 3 fish on the stringer in 10 minutes. Bass are around right now. By the way, don't trust weather forecasters, drive 30 miles, walk down a cliff to be met with an ONSHORE breeze kicking up a load of swell and no fudging viz. Arrgghh! Hop in the car suited and boiled in the bag, mark 2 useless, mark 3 useless, now running out of time so walk a mile to a headland looking for viz, nothing showing so jump in and swim back. Shame to have a downer on what was my last trip for probably a month.

Plenty to look at from the past on here, just use the search function. There is the potential to spear a fish anywhere on the dorset coast, viz can be an issue though. Look for sheltered headlands,bays etc. with a stable bottom and rough ground is your best bet for best viz. Loads of well known spots, that may not be the best, but are easy to find and access such as chesil cove, portland harbour, ringstead, osmington, lulworth cove. If you are keen then pop on your hiking boots and get on some of the more remote spots.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on deeper blue, hope it is in the appropriate place.

My family and I are moving to the Charmouth / Lyme regis area of dorset in a few weeks. We are re-locating from Hawaii. I am hoping to link up with a few experienced divers that don't mind showing me the basics of spearfishing in the UK, specifically the Lyme area. I have reached out to Tony from Crystal Viz, who was very kind in his response- I'm hoping to make some good connections here as well. I'm really looking forward to learning how to hunt in new waters, although I'm sure I will miss morning dives like this- speared this morning from a shore dive by my dive partner- I missed a shot on the 2nd larger tuna.

East Devon/West Dorset, pretty much the same as Hawaii, I expect you'll hardly notice a difference Welcome to DeeperBlue.

Viz was quite good Monday, several metres but murky. The water turned v. cloudy further out (vis. ~1m.) with a slight chop, so I swam back to clearer water closer to shore until the tide turned. As the tide turned vis. cleared up to a reasonable level , so was able to continue on may way, this time assisted by the tide rather than fighting it .

Lots of those big white barrel jelly fish around this year, probably saw 5 or more (pos. saw the same ones several times though!). Apparently the Japanese eat jelly fish (and the Japanese have the highest av. life expectancy of any nation ~87+ year) - didn't fancy dealing with one of these though A few small fish around, nothing too exciting. A few small spider crabs, some starting to mate...
