Dorset Spearing 2008

Right.. Just had an email back from Vobster and they dont care where we dive

Hi Bryn,

No, it's not complusory - you pay to use the water so you can dive anywhere. You might find the 12m ledge on the far side handy as it's not visited by divers. Emma and I have discussed putting some targets over there for spear fishing training....

If you need to chat,

All the best,

Tim

I just want to do a bit of training with a bunch of spear fishermen ( No guns! ) and hooking onto lines and doing the comp thing is not very real for us. I am an AIDA instructor and a member of the BFA, also I have dived and taught with Emma F quite a few times.

so you wont have to join the BFA ( Unless you want to.. ) Podge as ever you are a star doing the ground work and lets try to keep the numbers limited to no more than 8 guys in the water. Any more than that and I cant keep track of what the Feck's going on!

If you could sort the numbers and everything out between you ( John ? Podge ? ) that would be grand. :)

Hi again all, the course sounds great but unfortunately cant make it.. prior engagements. :( If your about for another Bryn give me a shout. On a side note went diving yesterday.. took a drive to find some vis at a secret spot with Titus, headed left first hunting along the kelp beds plankton was in full bloom on the surface (first 2m) but vis opened up under that to about 4m. No fish so headed right in search of some of them, eventually after a lot of seaching and swimming through the usual spots found some bass, I came home with five two of which were nice 5lb+ Titus managed 4 all nice and claimed the biggest at about 6lb. He also took two big mullet for me to smoke both about 7lb Had I not already got a freezer full could of taken two or three similar size mullet myself. Finally headed back to the boat and decided on a whim to grab (literally) a dogfish to try a dgfish madras recipie I have, unfortunately my eyes outweighed my skill, grabbed a nice one only to find my hand didn't stretch around it and it escaped after trying its best to bite me and the bass on my stringer! Saw plenty of spider crabs and a few nice edibles too but had seen some better ones a few days before in a different spot so will go back for those. Saw a sea trout too which was nice, he almost got nailed when the flash of silver shouted 'bass' in our ears! On a less nice note saw two mullet with spear holes in them, second time I've seen injured fish at this spot but never seen another spearo there? Would love to tell you all where to solve the mystery but this spot has always produced a few 10lb+ bass late in the season and want to keep it to myself!
Anyway got back to the beach and headed home only to notice time had really flown and I was severly in the dog house.. so off to make cake and dinner as an apology, thats if she is talking to me yet! lol.

Forgot to add had a mare with equipment too... broke my line release on the first shot and spent remainder of the dive shooting wthout wrapping the line, also my stringer got inexplicably tangled in my weight harness, couldn't work it out in the water and was now too short to string behind me so just strung it infront actually worked really well and might use that method in the future also helped with me being paranoid about loosing fish off my stringer as I could see and count them all whenever needed!

Just added a couple of pics of last weekends Cornwall trips catch on the Cornwall 2008 thread if anyone wants to see them. Unfortunately no pictures of yesterdays fish as forgot the camera and mostly now in the freezer so not picturing them like that! lol

Hello chaps, I thought I'd introduce myself as a new member of the forum. I've been spearing for about a year with a mate, and have been following this forum and lasts years for around this length of time. It's great to see the wealth of experience that is passed within these pages and the community appeal of the sport.

Firstly I should pay my respects at the awesome catches that have been posted of late. It seems that everyone is clearing up and the start of an awesome season has begun. My sucess has been somewhat limited recently and the only thing I've managed to catch is a tasty cold.
I live over in Poole so have started diving the harbour entance a lot , with visits over to the spots on the other side of the ferry a fair bit. I struggle on experience though and as I started spearing with a mate who didn't have any experience either, its a bit of the blind leading the blind. I did okay last season with some bass and mullet, but this season its gone totally out of the window and the only thing I seem to do is entertain the fish from afar with my spluttering and mistimed shooting.
I'm really keen to spear whenever I can and I would love to meet up with some of you guys to be able to share the fish and tips. I work shifts so am available at some odd times, which can be a blessing and a curse. I actually stumbled upon my own litle spot the other day which I'm dead keen to investigate. Once I do I'll post the results.

Welcome to Deeperblue hightower:)

Check out the first Dorset 2008 spearo BBQ thread. If you can make it just post there.

Don't worry about experience as you will never stop learning:)

Welcome to DB Hightower!! And congrats on the fish Joe...that's a decent haul early season!

Nice one Brett, I take it that you’ll be sharing a tent?
I’m more interested in tent numbers as I don’t know how many spaces the camp site has for tents as all I can see from the road is caravans but like I said I’ll have a drive up there on the way home from work tomorrow and find out.

I'm in too Podge, but the baby is due on 31st may, so if it's late I may have to bail....or I would never spear again!! :)

Thanks for the legwork mate!

Now, whhhhhooooooo's diving tomorrow am? I've got parole for the morning if anyone needs a buddy?

btw - I promised my in-laws scallops and bass for supper tomorrow night. I know where I can get both separately, but if anyone knows a spot that has a chance of both, there's always that PM button

haha :)

Trouble is I am sure I did not drink it all. I think I have the house too Hot :rcard every drink seems to evaporate quicker than I can drink it... :fridayroflroflrofl
Have a good day at work and see you Sunday

Thanks for the warm reception everyone. I'm afraid I cant make the BBQ as my missus dad has a birthday dinner. I am definetly interested in the freediving at Vobster though. I have the time off work and I think that instruction would be a great foundation to build on.
I went in at poole harbour last night with no success.
Quite how fish are capable of showing any emotion similar to contempt is beyond me, but I certainly found out last night that they can. I met an entire shoal of bass that spent the best part of an hour dancing provocatively just outside the range of my gun, making many mocking advances towards me. I'm sure that I even saw one of them moving his fins to try to flick me the bird but I may be getting paranoid.
Perseverance is the key and I shall be back.

Haha, They can be cheeky blighters! So Clive you know the secret location of site B.. mmmm best kept quiet.. assuming you know the true loaction that is and not another wild goose chase courtesy of Mr Bradley!

On a side note.. I am considering and I emphasise considering getting rid of my boat, would appreciate any ideas (or offers!) on what it may be worth. Getting rid to fund a car so would take a car as a swap or maybe a smaller boat (roof rackable)
Anyway boat is a 4.2m Zodiac inflatable rated 8 persons and 55hp with aluminium floor really good trailer and mariner 20hp outboard. All in perfect running order but all well used (few patches etc) goes well with a 20hp on think you would be brave to try with a 55! Will take 4 spearos and obscene amounts of gear with ease, cane be launched off trailer or boat is light enough for two divers to carry a short distance.
Let me know what you think.
Joe

Hi Jo,

When your father is ex britsih champ and has dived every inch of the Dorset/Devon coast..... you really think I don't know ;) Don't worry, I'll not mention.....or shoot it out! I'm sticking to Portland for the time being....time restraints and all (working for myself) so you and Titus are safe... this season anyway ;)
