Thought I have a look at some similar ground to the comp this Sunday today , just in case I can make it, so dived Osmington - mistake! Zero Viz! Swam out about a mile to try and find clear water, but even out there I could only just see the end of my gun.... so swam back in again and had a beer in the garden!

Dorset Spearing 2008

So do I was planning in getting my next dive in that area.:head
Noticed the winds for the weekend are North Westerly (Saturday) and West South Westerly (Sunday) are either of these good for that area of the cost or should I head for Chesil / Newton / The Grove.
Any advice would be great.
Just sat down after a nice long dive and preparing my catch for supper 
Vis excellent in Portland Harbour - didn't see any bass or mullet, just a flounder, cuttle fish, loads of micro pollack and a boat hook!! Bryn was heading in as I was coming out - any luck with your little one??

I have reports of a spearo around the Osmington area - anybody from here, if so what was the vis like?
I went over to lulworth today with the missus and went in for a bit of snorkelling with her. The vis was pretty poor when you got out of the bay, the wind was disrupting it badly. Probably about 3-4 meters. Just saw a load of bored looking wrasse.
Had a good dip today. :friday
Whent to Ringstead just round from Osmington. Vis was bad maybe 2 mtrs in the shallows but a bit out it was about 4 - 6 mtrs.
fish seen small Bass, few Wrasse but nothing worth shooting, so moved to Seaton vis again very poor, seen a few fish again nothing worth shooting, so came home with about 8 nice sized Crabs. All in All a good day.

I went to Kimmeridge today ,the vis was better that I expected ,I was by myself and when I was about to enter in the water some divers were coming out of the water (usually there are loads of divers there),Nobody said hello ,in fact I could sense they were not happy for me to go spearfishing in their territory.2 of them approached me and told me that Kimmeridge is a marine reserve and it is NOT LEGAL to practice spearfishing or fish or collect any molluscs and they were warning me only as they did not want for me to be in trouble!!.I told them I was sure it was legal to practice this sport in the Purbecks ,I mention there were hundreds of boats fishing in the area at that precise moment + lobster pots everywhere!!!.Then they said that to fish you have to go quite far from the shore,I replied that usually there are boats fishing in the spot that I like + we could see 2 fishermen fishng off the shore just few yards from us!!. However I was polite and I did not want any problems so I said I was going to be snorkling only and dissapear.
Any comments?? ,was I right??,I think spearfishing is the most selective way of fishing .As far as I know there is by-law in Pembrokeshire which forbids spearfishing there ,not sure if it is active though ,but I have not heard of anything similar in Dorset.
I have to admit I have been spearfishing in kimmeridge hundreds of times ,it is one my favourite spots,and this was bound to happen ,generally speaking brittish public does not like spear guns...
Anyway after been put off big time and using a new spear gun I manage to miss 2 clear shots to 2 normal size basses ,I killed a very decent size pollack though ( I like them although I don't tend to hunt them) but this was a good size and I needed to have success 1st day with the brand new gun.
Also there is a good reason to celebrate today and been happy ,Has any of you seen the match Federer vs Nadal?.Ole ole ole ole!!!

They were wrong to tell you that it is illegal to spearfish at kimmeridge, it is a voluntary marine reserve, and you are free to do what you like there. I have had some people moan to me about spearing there in the past but politely ignored them. I guess that this is an area where it is a good idea to be subtle about what you catch, but most people won't mind you taking a fish for the pot. PS Spain are my team for the Euro's!
