Big thanks for the offer of a Jolly Roger, but a boat is off limits for me until after my hols -- but I will be wallowing around somewhere and with this wind as it is, Weymouth Swimming Pool looks the best bet!!

Gents,

I'm going to eat a spider crab. I've never had it before so have decided the day has come to grab one and cook it.

What I don't know about spider crabs is pretty much everything; how big do they need to be to be worth eating, how long do they need cooking for and which are the bits not to eat are probably my first questions.

Once I've got the cooked, non-poisonous meat out, what should I do with it to enjoy it at its best? Crab cakes with sweet chilli sauce, crab salad, crab burger?

Any experience and suggestions most welcome!

Spider crab is a favourite with Channel Islanders. Generally the meat is eaten cold after boiling the crab for 10 Min's. All you need is a few friends or family members to sit around the table, a hammer, crab picker, bread, butter, (Guernsey is best but I guess Cornish will do) & some vinegar. Vinegar is a good accompaniment because it cuts the richness of the sweet meat. Most of the meat is in the legs so the male crabs are best but you can pick the leg sockets as well. In my household eating spiders is a social affair & ideally done outside in the sun with a bottle of whine.
Bon apetite. :)

Hi everybody
I am also interested in the vobster weekend if work-busy agenda permit it.

About the spider crabs comment I would like to add that you can eat pretty much everything like Podge said ,there is nothing poisonous at all!!.As a spanish I have to say we pay much more for spiders than brown crabs ,to me the flavour is far superior ,I love eating the body where you will find nice white meat (more than in the legs )I tend to use port wine and mix it the green stuff + some white ,the paste is delicious ,I think it is what angels eat on sunday up there in heaven!!! .
I am hypersalivating ,enjoyed them.
There loads of different recipes if you goggle it.
After diving with Tonyannu 10 days ago I got some and did a superb linguini pasta with the white meat, yammyyy!!.

By the way ,I am planning to dive on thursday during day time ,as I have day off .Anybody interested please PM me.

Kind regards
Cesar

Any Englishman who can eat the contents that abide inside a spiders shell, other than the leg sockets, has my full respect!!
When my Italian friend Marco comes to Guernsey I find myself cooking or preparing half the parts of fish I give back to the sea!!
Obviously no disrespect to our Med friends as I am sure it is "we" who are missing out???!! rofl

I've got a good recipie that doesn't waste any of the crab - I'll track it down and get it off to you in the next couple of days.

Only take the really big male crabs, they’re the ones with the big ass claws.:martial:martial:):)
Leave the smaller clawed female crab alone as they’re not worth the effort, well that and if we start takeing the female’s before we know it there wont be any left.

Cheers Podge thanks for the advice. I will be leaving the females alone (crabs that is)!!

me and chris picked a couple up a year or so ago, just chucked them in a pot for a few minutes, most of what we ate was in the legs and claws, very tasty, especially with the beer we also drank! oh yeah happy birthday chris.
