Dorset Spearing 2009

Hi Gaz,

Me and a mate have been thinking of diving chesil cove but have been a bit cautious as I was told the currents could be dangerous!!! Anytips for timing, depth and distance from shore, just too see us right.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Kev,

I'm no expert on the area, but as long as you stay within 50m of the shore I'm sure you should be ok (it gets quite deep quite quickly there, so you probably wouldn't need to go out any further anyway). I've heard that currents can run strong there, but have never experienced it myself. I would imagine that it is only going to sweep you parallel to the shore anyway, initially, which should give you time to fin to saftey before you go too far. Think the problem areas are further down the island, in the direction of the bill. Swell can be a snag, mind you, both on the beach and against the rocks, if its coming in from the west - but then the viz is likely to be blown out too, so not worth getting in for both reasons. Best to go there when it's blowing from the east (when it is likely to be clearer and calmer than the rest of the Dorset coast).

I've only been there half a dozen times myself (usually on, or around, high tide) whereas there are people on this forum who have been diving it all their lives - hopefully one of them will read this and give you some expert advice (don't take what I've said as Gospel).

im pretty sure chesil cove is a safe place to dive as gaz said it gets deep quickly up to 12m or so, the currents dont get going till you get close to the bill. it does get busy with scubies and fisherman so make sure you give them wide berth apart from that its not a bad dive site

Just watch out if the swell gets over 1 meter as its hard to get out, it pulls you back out each time you try.

The tide does pick up on the headlands either side of hallelujah bay( the bay past the first point, from the cove toward the bill) especially around Blacknor but that's a long swim from the cove. As stated swells are a problem but at the moment it's perfect over there, it should stay that way while the winds from the east.

Just got back from Ringstead Vis was excellent loads of bait balls no Bass plenty of shoals of mullet/small Pollock saw one about 5lb in the distance......

just took a couple of mullet for the dog and practice.

shame there were no bass......

Mullet for the dog?? What’s the matter with Pedigree Chum?
Keep the Mullet for yourself mate, they taste great, flash fried with the skin side down ala Crispy skin style. Or on the BBQ, or even in a curry. I’ll tell you mate Mullet very under rated fish.

Well the dog would agree she licked the bowl from one side of the room to the other and back again.:t

next time i'll give them a go myself but they weren't of a great size just about right for doggie portion!

Kev did you cook the mullet for the dog or raw? we fed ours on raw meaty bones / BARF diet but it got too expensive + hassle. Our hound didnt take to fish too much, didnt try it cooked tho.

Hey all, Havent been on here for ages owing to a recent house move, but managed to get back into the spearing this weekend at Chesil cove. Was there for sat and sun, and saw a few spearos about. Didnt see much fish other than the little pollock schoolies, some spider crabs and a big cuttlefish (wierd looking things!)

Heres a thought, does anyone use corrected vision lenses in their masks if you need glasses, or do you just wear contacts? If you have the lenses in your masks, where do you get them?! I think my score of 0 fish this weekend may have something to do with my -1.5 eyesight!

pampered pets n'all that!

So, had a splash and dash with Dad yesterday at Chesil, had to be back for baby sitting duites.... 3 nice Bass and a Pollock..... nice.

Saw two other spearos just starting as Dad and I were getting out....who was that then?

Hey Mishnish.

I've got -8.5 in both eyes and use contacts all the time. No problems diving in them, spearing or scuba. Just be sure to close your eyes if your mask floods! Early on in my dive career I rigged an old pair of specs into an ancient cressi oval mask. Not a huge sucess I might add. You can get perscription lenses in masks, but the masks tend to be the large scuba variety. Contacts are way easier, and more importantly, cheaper to replace if lost.

I use a custom lens mask. Long story about my trials and tribulations of many years to get a successful set fitted in a mask. managed it with my current set up. Good mask, good lenses and now only half blind. Try to add more details when I get home from work.
